Brian Wilson July 2017 Wayne and Washtenaw County Picnic It s that time of the year again. Mark your calender s and plan to join us on Friday, July 14, in Hines Park. This year s theme is Country Western. Lunch will be either a hot dog or hamburger. There will be live entertainment, and bingo. This is a great way to meet new friends from other buildings or see old friends. If you are interested, please sign up in the outing binder. Hope to see you there! River Raisin National Battlefield Park We will be taking a trip down to the River Raisin on July 21. We will be having a picnic lunch. We will also be visiting the visitor center, which has exhibits, dioramas, original military items, life-like figures of combatants. If you are interested, please sign up in the outing binder. 2 2 New Items 2nd Annual American House Senior Olympics! It s time to start thinking of the Senior Olympics. We will be competing against other American Houses. There are many great events. Please see Ashley for an application. They will need to be turned in by July 5th. Guess Who Starting in July, we will be featuring a new resident each month for readers to guess who it is. Included will be a picture from your past and short biography. Bring your guesses to the front office. The following month we will announce the featured resident and winner. The winner will receive $5.00 for the resident store. If you would like to participate please bring your photos to Ashley. Employee of the M nth Raven Elliott Raven joined the American House team in early Raven was born and raised in Michigan. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Her future career goals are to finish her degree in Applied Science, and to continue to grow with American House. We are glad to have her as part of our American House Family. Food Committee Meeting Our first food committee meeting was very successful. Residents meet directly with the culinary supervisor, assistant culinary supervisor and lead server. This meeting focuses on suggestions and recommendations for the culinary department. We will meet the first Wednesday of the month. If you are interested in attending, please see the front office. We are excited to hear your feedback on the food and service. Resident Council Resident Council will meet on Thursday, July 20th, at 2:00 p.m. A supervisor from each department will be present. Wit & Wisdom Remember to Hydrate Staying hydrated through your summer workout is essential to fitness success. Losing too much water from your body through sweat stresses your cardiovascular system and impairs performance and mental acuity. In the two hours before a workout, drink at least 16 ounces of water. During your workout, refresh with 5 to 10 ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes. Continue to take in fluids after you re done exercising. A Slice Is Nice Add some slices of tomato to sandwiches and salads. Tomatoes contain lycopene, which helps protect your skin from sun damage and can improve circulation.

March into a discussion of your parade memories. Did you attend local parades when you were a child? What were they like? Were they in a small town or big city? What was your favorite part of a parade when you were a youngster? What about as an adult spectator? Have you ever participated in a parade? What was the occasion? Did you walk, wave from a float, ride a horse, or cruise the route in another form of transportation? Describe the experience. A grand marshal usually leads the procession. Have you or someone you know had the honor of being a grand marshal? Eat Sweet Potatoes for Good Health! By Brian K. Rosso, R.D. Sweet potatoes are a great addition to any meal. I hope you find the information in this article informative and interesting. Sweet potatoes can be purchased year-round. In 1920, the average American ate 31 pounds of sweet potatoes per year. In 2007, the average American ate 5.3 pounds. Forty percent of the sweet potatoes grown in the United States come from North Carolina. The crop grows best in warm climates with plenty of sunshine. Most sweet potatoes are grown without the addition of any pesticides. Individuals living in Taiwan prepare and eat the leaves of the sweet potato plant. Street vendors in China sell baked sweet potatoes to the public during the winter months. Three-fourths of a cup of sweet potato provides 155 calories, 0 grams of fat, and 3 grams of protein. It s also a great source of vitamin C, fiber and potassium. Sweet potatoes are on the American House menu. They are served baked, mashed or even in a pie. Stop by a local American House and enjoy some sweet potatoes.

6 7 Milestones In June we had two couples celebrate milestone anniversaries. Happy Anniversary to each of you from your American House Family! Flag Day Thank you for your hard work! Marilyn and Charlie celebrated 65 years. Norm and Stella celebrated 70 years. Flag Day Thank you to the family and friends who came out to celebrate Flag Day with us. Thank you to the staff who worked so hard to make it a special event for our residents. Big thank you to our veterans who led us in the raising of the flag.
