After grdution, the United Sttes quickly drfted him into the Vietnm Conflict, which he served from 1968 to His degree in business nd finnce kept him from the front lines for those yers. He returned to the Sttes nd worked for Grin Belt Brewery in the Cities for five yers nd Control Dt for yer. Tht ws his only time wy from Montgomery. On Jnury 1, 1977, he returned to Montgomery nd begn working t Westermn Lumber Co., which he did for 30 yers. His retirement in 2008 ws short-lived, lsting only couple of yers. He went to work for the Montgomery Housing Authority s the mnger of Prk Mnor nd did so for five yers until he retired t the end of lst yer. The couple hs been dedicted to the community their entire lives nd rised their four children here. But, one specific memory does come to mind when I think bout my reign. It wsn t nything extrordinry, it ws simple moment tht I will remember forever. After long weekend of excitement, lughter, nd smiles, the brnd new Kolcky Dys Roylty hd finlly mde it to Sundy, which ws our first prde. This ws the first time we would be presenting ourselves to the community we would represent for the next yer. Tht s when the nerves strted to set in. I remember feeling nxious, wondering if I ws going to meet the town s expecttions. All the thoughts bout wht could go wrong rced through my hed. But, s the flot strted to move, nd we sw the welcoming fces smile bck t us, suddenly the nerves went wy. Like lwys, my community ws there supporting nd welcoming me s the new Kolcky Queen with open rms. Tht feeling of being welcomed by everyone in Montgomery lsted throughout our entire reign. Being Kolcky Queen hs been n mzing opportunity for me to shre my pride in my Czech heritge nd for Montgomery. It hs tught me mny skills tht I m now grteful for. I ve gined confidence, by putting myself out of my comfort zone s my royl- nothing but fun. Without our roylty coordintor, Angie Budin, we would hve been completely lost throughout the yer. An importnt prt of the trdition nd history of the festivl is the crowning of roylty the mbssdors of goodwill for the community who re entrusted to represent Montgomery t mny events throughout the next yer. There hve been volumes of history written bout Kolcky Dys, which ws previously referred to s singulr Kolcky Dy, the big dy on Sundy. We now cll it Kolcky Dys, since the ctivities re relly spred out over three dys. Going bck into some of tht history, there re few vritions in the story of how Montgomery s community celebrtion originted. Jo seph T. Rynd Jr. reportedly remembered the Montgomery Community Club members discussing the ide of community festivl in the winter of He wnted to celebrte something different from the other neighboring towns nd suggested Ko lcky Dy for the reson tht very few people would know wht it ws nd would be curious to find out nd in tht wy cuse lots of ttrction. Some my question how the festivl plnners ever rrived t the nme Kolcky Dy. One documented re port sid the ide ws generted by the editor of the Messenger, Peter Keohen, nd ws presented to the public in the September 13, 1929, issue of the newspper. The Community Club hd been trying to decide on nme to rivl other re celebrtions. Pete felt the term Kolcky my not men much to people t distnce who re not fmilir with the nme, but if they ever ttended one of our celebrtions nd filled up on tht fmous Bohemin deliccy, they will join the pilgrimge to this city ech yer herefter. First Queen in 31 The trdition of crowning roylty ws strted t the third nnul celebrtion in Lett Ehmke ws nmed the first Queen of Kolcky Dy. Her ttendnts were Ell Krock, Sylvi Zelenk, Ann Zelenk nd Berniece Mlone. The 1931 celebrtion ws held on Min Street for the first time nd ws joint pvement dediction nd Kolcky Dy. A pltform ws erected in front of Westermn Lumber nd the dediction ddress ws given by Stte Auditor Stfford King of St. Pul. He complimented the people of Montgomery for their foresight in going hed nd mking improvements in spite of the hrd economic times. Buttons In 1934 For the 1934 celebrtion, Tom Hunting devised novel button which ws on sle by the Kolcky Girls. The button ws strictly souvenir of the celebrtion nd strted the button sles which hve been used throughout the yers. In the erly dys of the button, the Kolcky Queen nd her ttendnts were determined by the number of buttons they could sell. The Kolcky Girls hd become n integrl prt of the festivl by this time. Dressed in costumes of Czech design, they mrched in prdes throughout Minnesot, promoting Ko lcky Dy whenever n opportunity rose. The colorful costumes, nd s n dded promotion, the delicious fruit-filled buns hnded out s smples to dignitries, politicins nd newsmen, brought much ttention to the community. Miss Gldys Peroutk reigned s queen nd ws ttended by Helen Kovrik, Henriett Bust nd Lillin Lusk. Council On Trikes Members of the city council proved to be the plyboys of the 1935 prde, heding the line of mrch on bikes nd tricycles. The celebrtion ws held on September 29, nd St. Wenceslus Dy ws celebrted in connection with Kolcky Dy (St. Wences lus is the ptron sint of Czechoslovki). World Wr II Following the Perl Hrbor Attck on December 7, 1941, Kolcky Dy nd ll tht it involved retreted to the bckground s the community grimly wved goodbye to its sons nd dughters s mny went off to wr. The yers pssed on, nd s the veterns returned, the Kolcky spirit ws ignited, nd in 1948 the Community Club decided to revive the celebrtion. Dr. Donld R. Nvrtil crowned Queen Gldys Soulek, who won the coveted honor by selling the gretest number of Kolcky Buttons. Her ttendnts were Donn Mudge, Mrie Snde, Mri ett Hruby nd Dorothy Wondr. These were the glory yers of prdes under the chirmnship of Ed Hermn, with 23 topnotch musicl units nd 15 flots included in the extrvgnz. 60,000 In 1960 An estimted 60,000 people flocked to Montgomery on September 25 to et those Czech buns nd wtch the 150-unit prde. It requires prctice, plnning, prctice, plnning nd more prctice. To help the cndidtes be the best they cn be, the Kolcky Dys Pgent Committee works with the girls over the course of two nd hlf months to mke sure they re redy for the big night on Fridy, July 22. Sheil Schoenbuer, the Registrtion nd Cndidte Chir, sets up the ctivities for the girls. Some of the events help the girls get redy for the pgent, while others get them into the community so they cn interct with people, something the new roylty will be doing once they're crowned. Interview Night brings the girls together with the current roylty. The girls bond over potluck dinner, look t video of the previous yer's pgent nd run through tips to help them prepre for their big night. Schoenbuer sid the girls lso prctice their interview skills, exctly how it will hppen with the judges before the pgent. "We give them full seven-minute interview," Schoenbuer sid. "When they're finished, we will give them pointers nd things to chnge so they're more polished. This helps them for the pgent, nd for the rest of their lives." Of course, some things re fun too, like ttending the tping of Bndwgon nd ttending Belle Pline's BBQ Dys, something the girls did lst week with their prents nd fmily. Schoenbuer sid while the girls re hving fun, they still need to remember they re lredy in the spotlight representing Montgomery. "This helps them get feeling of wht it will be like being roylty," she sid. Cndidte Grce Krutkremer sid the Pgent committee hs been very helpful through out her entire cndidcy, including coming to the dnce rehersls for the pgent's opening number. "They ech hve tken prt in coming to our opening number prctices nd they would help us with different things. These things would be teching how to wlk figure eight, which is more difficult thn you think, nd showing us how we should introduce our selves to the judges," Krutkremer sid. "I would lso personlly like to thnk the committee for giving up their free time in the summer to put on this wonderful celebrtion nd pgent!"
