Friday 19 th, February, School Website: School Address: Phone: Fax: YEAR 7 SETTLE INTO HIGH SCHOOL Layla Dowell, Zac Perrot, Talea Maslen, Sam Slavek Year 7 students at Hastings Secondary College, Port Macquarie Campus, have settled into secondary school quite comfortably if the four students spoken to are typical. All love high school especially the increase in the number of subjects they can now study. They like most of their teachers and find that making new friends comes easily. Layla Dowell already has a brother at the Port Macquarie Campus and that helps, she said I love Science and doing experiments, Layla continued. I find it really easy to get around now, once I got to know the blocks. Layla said she loves running and is looking forward to the athletics carnival. She admits she hates needles at vaccination time. The surprise at high school for me is, I m allowed to use my phone at recess and lunchtime. That didn t happen at primary. Page 1 of 7

Layla has many friends from Port Macquarie Public School where she attended and from Tacking Point Public School. She would like to be a paramedic when she leaves school. Zac Perrot attended Hastings Public School and is the eldest of four but admits he finds the early start of 8.15 am difficult to get used to. High school is better than primary as you have lots of subjects and lots of different activities. Lots of different teachers too, Zac said. My favourite subject is Geography and I love all my teachers. I also love all sports but my favourite is fishing. I plan on going into the fishing industry in the future. Zac also said he is making lots of new friends while staying friends with those he knows from Hastings Primary. Both of Talea Maslen s parents attended Port Macquarie High School. She has an older brother at Newmans College. I find high school just totally different, she said. The subjects go for only a short amount of time compared to primary and high school is much more interesting. The early start suits me as I find it easy to go to dancing in the afternoon. Talea would like to travel when she is older. I want to travel the world. I might be a flight hostess. That sounds good. Her favourite subjects she claims are, Lunch one and lunch two but she admits she would nominate Maths if pressed. Besides dancing she also loves surfing. Sam Slavek s step-dad also went to Port High and he has a younger sister who is still at Tacking Point Public where Sam attended. Nothing worries me, Sam claimed. I settled in nicely and easily. High school is much more fun and I like the early start. There is so much free time in the afternoon. I played footy for two years but now I like skating. My favourite subject is Maths and I have the best teacher. Sam would like to be a builder but admits he might change his mind when he s older. The Year Advisers Ms Farmer and Ms Cox said they are delighted with how successfully their year 7 students are transitioning to high school. Year 7 students are very enthusiastic and are adapting to the huge changes that happen with arriving at high school, according to Ms Helen Cox. Sometimes it takes a while to get into the swing of changing class five times a day and having new teachers and friends. One thing I would like to say is, we need parents and carers to help us stamp out any kind of bullying when it arises. This can make school life not a happy experience. Please feel free to contact the Year Advisers with any concerns, Ms Cox added DANCERS AUDITION Our College "Dance Company" had tryouts recently. This was very popular with close to 50 students from years 7-12 involved. There was some incredible talent on display. Students from the Hastings Secondary College Dance Company perform at many College and community events this year. Keep an eye out for these talented dancers. Page 2 of 7

What s happening in Week Five Thursday:Wollatuka Aboriginal Ed Years 7,8,11,12 St. Valentine s Day Year 12 students held a fundraiser for Valentine s Day by selling balloons and red roses with messages of love to students who wanted to impress the boy or girl of their dreams. There were plenty of surprised (and sometimes embarrassed) faces when the Year 12 students went knocking on classroom doors. This is a long established practice at the Port Macquarie Campus and this year s Year 12 organised the occasion with great enthusiasm. The balloons and roses brought some vibrant colour to the school day and added some welcome dollars to the Year 12 social fund coffers. From the Principals Desk - Kylee Owen It is an absolute pleasure to watch our new Year 7 students make themselves comfortable in their new learning environment. They are keen, attentive and building many new relationships. I must say that this has been well guided by their wonderful Year Advisors Ms Clare Farmer and Ms Helen Cox. With continued encouragement, support and lots of smiles, they have managed to assist all Year 7 students to adjust. They have joined our academies and PIPs with enthusiasm and we look forward to watching them learn and grow. We encourage all of them to take up the enormous range of opportunities which we have on offer at Port Macquarie Campus. It is now that we begin our transition journey with the current Year 6 in our partner primary schools. Monday evening began with an information evening at Lake Cathie and we will be presenting at all of the schools in our Hastings Valley Community of schools. These are the first of a wide range of transition activities which will support our Year 7 of Page 3 of 7

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS Ashlyn Dures, Tayla Davenport, Hunter Brent, Elise Burke, Jack Agland, Courtney Camozzato, Amy Borizov, Ethan Dennis, Ms Davis Town's House is ecstatic about winning the 2016 Campus Swimming Carnival. Thanks to the enthusiastic participation of our new Year 7 students we managed victory by just three points in front of Flynn's House. The ultimate inspirational effort came from those Town's legends who woke up early in the awful rain on the Friday morning and managed to get to the pool by 7am to participate in the long distance events! Ash Dures ensured we made some great points by her outstanding results. However, the participation from so many Town's representatives on that morning ensured our ultimate sound victory overall. I have truly never been more proud of our Town's House (and that is saying something)! Thank you to our awesome senior students who are incredible role models, leading by example, ensuring that the culture of the Town's spirit continues to thrive. Well done Town's. You guys are the BEST! Our 2016 best dressed awards go to: Hunter Brent (Yr 9) and Elise and Courtney (Yr 7), They looked absolutely fabulous! And the Spirit of Town's award goes to two very worthy Town's champions, Jack Agland (Yr 9) and Amy Borizov (Yr 8) These two students go in EVERY race with the biggest smiles on their face! Thanks for being YOU!!! Well done to all our Town's champions! 5 Opens Basketball Gala Day The Opens Basketball Gala Day was held at Port Macquarie Basketball Stadium on Thursday, February 11 th, with Port Macquarie Campus entering a girls and a boys team. The boys played against Wauchope High first. It was a very challenging game and was a close game up until the third quarter. At the fourth quarter Wauchope took the lead and kept it. The boys then played Camden Haven, again putting up a great battle but unfortunately losing in the last minute by two points. The girls out performed all schools winning all of their games on the day and placing first. They played Wauchope and Melville. The girls team progress to round four of the Opens Girls Regional Knockout Draw. Congratulations to the team - Georgia Hunt, Nakita Heuer, Kaitlyn Powell, Lauren Beasley and Toni Hurkett for making the Lower North Coast Team. Congratulations to all players on the day and good luck to the girls team in the next round Damien Huens Girls Open Basketball Team: Mr Huens, Lauren Beasley, Toni Hurkett, Tiana Smith, Taniesha Collins, Kaitlyn Powell, Georgia Hunt, Drew Miante and Nikita Heuer Boys Open Basketball Team: Mitchell Bailey, Kane Meyer, Jay Beasley, Garrett Schaefer, Angus Garratt, Luke Batchelor, Ryan Muir, Aiden Tyler, Blake Goodridge and Mr Huens State Volley Knockout Page 5 of 7

Our boys and girls Volleyball teams came third in the Lower North Coast after competing at the Wauchope Gala Day. Unfortunately we were defeated by Wauchope, who are always very strong, in our first game. Both teams easily accounted for Kempsey and the girls defeated Camden Haven as well. Both teams played well and were competitive in all of their games and came close to progressing further. Best and fairest in the boys team was Kane Pollard and for the girls was Phoebe Rich. As a result Phoebe was chosen for the Lower North Coast Representative Team and Elenoa Wilson was selected as a reserve YEAR 7 IMMUNISATION REMINDER Consent forms are to be returned to the school office as soon as possible. If you have not received a consent form you can obtain one from the front office. The first vaccination is on the 8 th March 2016 Careers News Page 6 of 7

Yr 12 Regional University Roadshow On Thursday last week our Year 12 students attended a presentation by Charles Sturt, New England and Southern Cross Universities called The Regional University Roadshow. The roadshow is visiting most high schools in Northern NSW, giving senior students an insight into university life. This presentation informed students about all aspects of a university pathway including: degrees, campuses, accommodation, services, scholarships, applications, student life and facilities. The students appreciated the insightful information as well as the chance to explore future career opportunities. Mr White Careers Adviser Page 7 of 7
