City crews spent As the unnamed storm of May 2009 leaves many of our memories, the aftermath continues. 27+ FINAL TOWN HALL BUDGET MEETING ZONE 1 Commissioner Gillooly New Date: June 8, 2009 Time: 7:00 p.m. Location: Performing Arts Center the last 12+ days dealing with storm water but now they are focused on fixing the infrastructure. Roadways that rec e i v e d large volumes of storm water are now in need of repair, storm drain lines that reached maximum capacity have split their seams and trees saturated have decided to topple over from the weight. Druid Circle is one of those areas the storm drain split its seams and created a sinkhole. The pictures show the repair and replacement of that storm drain line.

2 P A G E 2 Continue to Support Your Friends and Neighbors It s so wonderful to wake up and see the bright sunny Florida sky shining; something we often t a k e f o r granted. The extraordinary flooding which took place last month is now over; but much of the damage remains. Our friends and neighbors continue to pick up the pieces of what is left of their homes; each thankful for the help and support that has been given to them so that they may begin to rebuild their lives. Each thankful that no lives were lost, and they may go on to rebuild. This Saturday, the Leisure Services Director was featured on a local radio program and put out a plea asking the community for assistance to aid our local flood victims. Also this week, Leisure Services Department staff contacted Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) in an effort to donate surplus dry food items from last year which are kept as emergency hurricane supplies. The PAC Supervisor worked with Sherry Crawford, director of HUM, and organized a pick up of the supplies on Thursday. This will also allow the City to prepare for the restocking of the City s emergency food storage just in time for hurricane season, and the old, soon-to-be-expired supplies, will be put to good use by Halifax Urban Ministries. In total an estimated $2,000 in various food items to include but not limited to canned vegetables, dried cereal, granola bars, crackers, cookies, fruit cups, frozen hamburgers, hotdogs and chicken patties were donated to Halifax Urban Ministries. The Leisure Services Director also sent out a request to local organizations suggesting that fundraisers be held to help area victims affected by the recent disaster. HUM cares for people in need by providing emergency services with the prime objectives of keeping them from becoming homeless.

3 P A G E 3 BE PREPARED The 2009 Hurricane Season began on June 1 st and continues until December 1 st. Now is the time to develop your disaster plan before a storm is approaching. When preparing your plan, here are a few things to keep in mind: Discuss disaster plans as a family Develop a list of things that need to be taken care of in preparing for a disaster. Make evacuation plans Decide where you will go if an evacuation order is given and leave well in advance of the approaching storm as evacuation routes could be heavily congested. Take inventory of your valuables Prepare a list, videotape or photograph your valuables. Review your insurance policies Do this well in advance of an approaching storm. Once a hurricane watch has been issued, most insurers will not issue new or additional coverage, including flood insurance. Keep these documents in a safe place. Check your home for vulnerable areas roof, windows, garage doors, patio doors, etc., should be checked to determine what protective measures you should make to secure your home in the event of an approaching storm. Protect vehicles Decide where you will store or park your vehicles, boat, or RV. Remember to check your insurance policies for your vehicles and keep them in a safe place. Reduce damage to your property You may wish to install window shutters, purchase a generator, trim trees, and double-check tie-down straps and anchors if you live in a mobile home or a manufactured home. Special needs Make arrangements well in advance of a storm for the care of infants, the elderly, and those with special needs. Persons with special needs should register with the Volusia County Health Department. Plan for your pets Make plans for your pets whether you stay or evacuate. Remember to make plans for large outdoor pets such as horses. Assemble a disaster supply kit Make sure to have a week s supply of nonperishable food, water and medical items for your family. Make a checklist well in advance. Share your plans Let family, friends, and coworkers know your plans, and how they can reach you. Establish an out-of-town point of contact with a family member or friend. Please don t wait until a storm is approaching, make your disaster plan now. Accurate airport traffic data has been collected since the air traffic control tower opened in mid- September of ,869 (9/15 through 12/31) , , , ,352 These figures include over flights of the Ormond Beach airport through the Daytona Beach I n ternational Airport s Class Delta airspace, not landing at or departing from OBMA. The totals indicate 16,428 more operations recorded in 2008 versus Taking into account the control tower hours of operation, this figure represents an average of about 4 more operations per hour at OBMA. The next Airport Advisory Board Meeting will be held on July 13th at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Training Room. 5 P A G E 5 Notification of Street Closure Beginning Monday, June 8, 2009 for a period of approximately five months, Division Avenue between Beach Street and Ridgewood Avenue will be closed for major reconstruction. Please use designated detours. If you have any questions regarding this closure, please contact the City of Ormond Beach Engineering Department at Tennis Anyone? In just one day, great strides have been made in the renovation of t h e tennis b u i l d - ing at N o v a C o m - munity P a r k. C o n - tractors have removed the deteriorating siding, broken windows and rotted doors and will now be replacing them with Hardie board siding, new vinyl windows and fiberglass doors. Building Maintenance will be insulating and paneling the interior walls. The completed building will give Nova Community Center the added benefit of another structure available for community use. Many citizens have been taking advantage of the tennis lessons offered which have been ongoing for over a month. The tennis courts will be closed for resurfacing through the week of June 8th. Barring any unforeseen delays, it is anticipated the newly resurfaced courts will reopen to the public June 15th. With the beautiful weather, many members of the community have been using the amenities around the park. The children and adults continue to find the parks batting cages and playground advantageous for both organized and unstructured leisure activities. The playground at the Nova Community Park just had 110 yards of mulch installed as a safety protection for the children. Many children will be off from school during the coming months, and parents are looking for some type of recreation close to home for their children to enjoy. There are many facilities available at the park including a picnic pavilion, outdoor grills, exercise trails, a skate park, basketball courts, and handball courts. Instructional and exercise classes, as well as summer camp sessions, are also offered. W E E K L Y R E V I E W

6 P A G E 6 Smile...You re at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center! Too often we rate the quality or the significance of our service to the community in numbers. We worry about how many jump shots made, pounds lifted or trophies won. At the South Ormond Neighborhood Center, we would like you to also factor in the friendships and memories made, the sound of laughter and the smiles. The Ormond Beach Flames Are On Fire! On May 30th, 16 girls and one boy from the Ormond Beach Flames cheer team traveled with their coaches to Myrtle Beach, NC for a cheer competition. There were over 50 teams competing ranging from s m a l l - s i z e d teams to adult teams. Once again, the Flames came out with spunk and e n t h u s i a s m, showing the judges just how hard they have worked. They won first place in the small coed team division! For a team only formed a few short months ago, the Flames are red hot! Congratulations to the team and their coaches. The smiles are always the most important factor when you think about a park or center. The best compliment our staff can get is when a child cries because it is time to leave the center. We encourage you to take the time to e n j o y your days. Come out to visit a park or center and create some smiles and memories of your own! Guild Members Honored For Service The Casements Guild members held their last monthly meeting in May before taking a much needed break for the summer. One of the last items on their agenda was to acknowledge members who had reached over 100 hours of service throughout the year. Each year the members are awarded hour pins that mark their total numbers in hundreds of hours served. Twenty seven members received new pins, six of them being newer members receiving their first 100-hour pins. The total number of pins awarded were 27 and a grand total of 28,000 hours were represented. We appreciate their dedicated service to The Casements, our visitors and the community, and commend The Guild for 30 wonderful years of service!

7 P A G E 7 The Platters Rocked the House! On May 23rd at 7:30pm, The Platters lit up the stage at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center to a packed h o u s e! T h e y performed all of their original Platters hits including Only You, The Great Pretender, I'm Sorry and much more. The Platters have recorded nearly 400 songs, have sold over 89 million copies of those songs, and have p e r f o r m e d throughout the world; winning many awards and an induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in The Platters, over the years, have appeared in 27 movies such as "Rock Around The Clock," "Girl's Town," "Europe By Night," and many more. It all began in January of 1953, when four men converged on Los Angeles to form a singing group, often competing and winning local amateur shows. After long nights and numerous ideas, their trademark name was coined, named after the term popular with DJs when referring to records, hence, The Platters! The Platters ended their twohour show at the PAC with the biggest hit in their repertoire, The Great Pretender. A standing ovation and a ten + minute thunderous applause left the nostalgic crowd screaming for more. Pageant Queens Grace the Stage at the PAC! The Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center hosted the Miss Ormond Beach USA pageant on Sunday, May 31 st. This marks the ninth pageant at the Performing Arts Center from the producers of the Donald Trump owned pageant system in the last four years. The pageant had a total of 15 contestants all vying for the crown. In the end, two young ladies were overjoyed to be selected to represent Ormond Beach in the State pageant. The Miss Florida USA pageant is open to all women of the Sunshine State of Florida. To be eligible for the Miss Florida Teen USA Division the girls must be between the ages of 13 18, and their birthdates must fall between 2/2/91 and 2/1/96. To be eligible for the Miss Florida USA Division the girls must be between the ages of 18-26, with birthdates between 2/1/83 and 2/1/91. All delegates must be USA citizens or residents of Florida for six months, never been married or had a marriage annulled, never given birth to a child and born a female. The Miss Florida USA pageant is scheduled for July 14-18, 2009 at The Westin Diplomat Resort and Hotel on Hollywood Beach. The City of Hollywood will be the site of several events and pretape sessions prior to the State pageant. 8 P A G E 8 Handball s a Big Hit in Ormond Beach! If you re a handball player and Memorial Day Weekend is approaching, one can bet you re looking forward to a tough competition, seeing some great friends, and a banquet held Saturday night at the Port Orange home of Pete and Dottie Overeem. Mr. Overeem is the Southeast Representative for National Handball and is a member of the Daytona Ormond Handball Association. For the past 33 years, this local Handball Association has hosted the annual three-wall handball championship tournament right here in Ormond Beach at the Nova Recreational Complex. The annual tournament is held over Memorial Day weekend beginning Saturday morning and ending on Monday. Mr. Overeem was inducted into the Handball Hall of Fame this year. He and other members of the local handball association including long time member, Mike Medei, were instrumental in working with the City to get the handball courts built at the Nova Complex where the tournament began 33 years ago and is still held today. This year there were 138 players, including two women, and included entries from collegeage up to the year old players. The participants and their families traveled from all over the state of Florida and as far away as Ohio, New York, Minnesota, Arizona, and Michigan vying for the coveted trophies. Most stayed in area hotels for the long weekend. Leisure Services athletic field maintenance staff brought in two sets of bleachers to accommodate the crowds. The weather did not completely cooperate on Saturday, and the tournament had to be brought inside to Club Boom for several hours. The rain certainly did not dampen the spirits of the players and their families who are looking forward to returning to Ormond Beach next year for the tournament. A sense of camaraderie and friendship prevailed. As one family member said, I m not sure whether or not my husband will play again next year, but we ll be sure to come back!. 9 P A G E 9 Leisure Services Offers a Variety of Summer Programs School vacation has started, and many parents are searching for interesting and structured activities for their children to participate in. The Leisure Services Department offers a variety of camps and clinics to help both children and parents have an enjoyable summer. Limited space is available in the following programs: Summer Connection Day Camps Offered at: Nova Community Center And South Ormond Neighborhood Center Session 1: 6/15-7/10 Session 2: 7/13-8/07 Cost per Session: $150 Residents; $225 Nonresidents No camp July 3 rd Holiday No Nova Camp August 4 th Children will participate in arts and crafts projects, sporting activities and games. Trained counselors with First Aid and CPR training are on hand to help ensure the safety of your child. Enviro-Camp Enviro-Camp, designed for children ages 6-10, meets from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The focus for Enviro-Camp is on preserving our surroundings and hopefully even improving our environment for generations to come. One week sessions are offered at Osceola Elementary School beginning July 6th and ending the week of August 3rd. Weekly Topics include: Don t Bug Me!, Paint it Green!, Wazz Up?, I m Hooked!, and Our Ocean in Motion. Children will enjoy daily craft projects, nature walks, and nature and wildlife inspired games and videos. Parents must provide a lunch and two snacks and beverages. The cost is $85 per week. Summer Art Camp Artist Gretchen Neal will once again be teaching students at our Summer Art Camp. This camp offers six weeks of fun and education into the art world. All participants must have completed kindergarten. Classes meet from 9:00 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at Bailey Riverbridge Gardens. One week sessions begin the week of June 15th and end the week of July 27th. The cost is $125 per week which includes all supplies. PAC/CMT Summer Camp The King and I Children will be working in conjunction with the Children s Musical Theatre to produce a performance of The King and I at the Performing Arts Center. Classes are held Monday-Thursday and run from July 13-July 30. For children in the 1st-4th grade classes will be held from 9:00 a.m-12:30 p.m. The cost is $175 plus a $50 material fee and an $50 show fee. For children in the 5th grade and up, the classes will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The cost is $325 plus a $50 material fee and a $50 show fee.
