Jack was in great form not only for the trail end dance but all weekend. Glenn Kelley cued several round dances and Wanda Wagner led the line dances. There were approximately 9 squares in attendance. I do apologize to everyone at the trail end dance for not getting to the school early enough the get the air conditioning turned down as much as needed. It was too hot! Friday all the festivities started at the Capital Plaza Hotel. Jack Pladdys & Tom Davis conducted a caller s clinic in the morning. I understand that several callers asked for copies of Jack s Power Point presentation. Dancing started at 2:00 PM and lasted until around 11:00 PM. Ice cream was available to the dancers since the Capital Plaza was gracious enough to all us to buy and serve our own ice cream. Saturday dancing started at 10:00 AM and lasted until 11:00 PM. At the annual KFSD meeting the only item on the agenda was to elect a new slate of KFSD officers. Their term in office begins November 1 st.. The new officers are : President-Jerry and Donna Neal, Vice-President-Sharon Morgan, Treasurer-Phyllis Tomes and Secretary-Denise Johnson. Saturday evening began with the color guard presenting our flag. Next the veterans that were present were honored for their service in all branches of the armed services. The callers took the opportunity to recognize the over-the-top efforts of Sharon & Rick Morgan in the caller s room. The callers, cuers & line dance leaders volunteer their services to our weekend and Sharon tries her best to make sure that every staff person wants to come back next year. Winners of the week condo vacation were Danny & Julia Branham of North Vernon, IN. They bought their winning ticket at the Seymour Pig Roast. Larry Stidam won the weekend condo mini-vacation. The winner of the individual Booster Club was Joe Urbassik and the winning club was the Lexington Do Si Dos. All of the Capital Plaza banquet staff were very helpful for our very unique event. John was one of the staff that was exceedingly helpful. He managed to embrace the opportunity and collect as many yellow rocks as possible. He explained late Saturday night that he would have collected at least 100 but he was ordered over to the Convention Center to support an event that was going on at the same time as our evening dance. 2 Page 2 Message from the KFSD President Hello Square Dancers, This is a great big thank you for each and every person who came to the KFSD Convention this past weekend in Frankfort, Ky. We had the best place to dance with great rooms, hotel on sight and a really special restaurant to eat in. They were treated like royalty by Rick and Sharon Morgan (nobody does it better). did his usual superb job in coordinating the callers. Wes Dyer just does whatever has to be done and he is always great. George and Margaret Scott got the ball rolling by finding this place, then followed through with doing floor plans, registration, and whatever else needed done. We had retired dancers who came and helped. So many people helped with floors, set up and take down, decorations or working tables. We just couldn t have done this without all of you working together to make this a really Big Show. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts. The only thing we really lacked was enough dancers. It takes between $5,000-$6,000 to put this Convention on. The Blue Spirit Region was the host this year and out of 200+ dancers in our region, only 40+ came. We had more from the Gold Region than our own. We had dancers from 5 states. What can we do to get more people out dancing, especially at the Convention, weekends and club dances? We need your input to help find a solution to this problem. WE have elected new officers. They are : Presidents Jerry and Donna Neal, Vice Presidents Rick and Sharon Morgan, Treasurer Jim and Phyllis Tomes and Secretary Denise Johnson. They are waiting to hear from each and every one who has any ideas to help square dancing continue in the area. Harry and I have loved working with all of you and hope we have helped along the way. We feel it is time for some new ideas and new people. We will still be here whenever you need us and want to know that no other people have meant so much to us. We love you all and will keep you and dancing in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Harry and Virginia Marshall President KFSD Message from Blue Spirit Region To all fellow square dancers, Thanks for every one who came to the Convention. We worked really hard and were pleased with the way it turned out. If you had a good time we hope you will buy ribbons for next year as soon as possible. For those of you who were not able to attend this year, we hope to see you next year. The Capital Plaza was an ideal venue and we would love to be able to afford to hold it there next year. In order to do that, we need to sell a lot of ribbons, much more than we did this year. The support of all dancers is paramount. We as well as the new KFSD officers would appreciate your feedback and any ideas you can offer to help promote and support square dancing in Kentucky. George and Margaret Scott BlueSpirit_Scott@bellsouth.net or

3 Page 3 6 th KFSD Convention (cont.) I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to making this weekend happen: decorating, putting down and taking it up the flooring, getting the callers, cuers & line dance leaders to come to our convention, scheduling all of the callers, rescheduling the callers and then trying to see that everyone that was supposed to show up on time was actually there, dipping the ice cream, selling half and half tickets as well as the raffle tickets, checking every dancer in and selling at the door ribbons, all of the dancers and clubs that were members of the Square Booster Club program. I realize that I may be very prejudiced but I think this hotel was a very good facility for our dance. It was located in as central a location as I could find. The 3 dance halls were just the right size. I liked the layout of the reception desk and the hallway that could hold convention tables, flyer tables, ice cream table, 50/50, etc. The location of the caller s room in relation to all the dance halls was ideal. The Capital Plaza banquet staff was very, very understanding and accommodating to the special requirements that we had. Before the Trail End dance we only had about 100 ribbons sold. We ended up selling about 25 at the door during the convention but that still was below my expectations. The only thing we were lacking at this convention was attendance. The table below was created from the registration forms I ve collected each year. I realize that this may not be all of the dancers but it s the best measurement I can come up with. My take on these numbers is Dancers in Kentucky don t travel too far away from home. It is not something that is unique to any particular geographical area. Total Reg. Blue - North Blue - South Gold KY Green 2009 Heritage Hall Center for Rural Dev Paroquet Springs Covington Louisville Frankfort Out of State My personal opinion is that the convention should pay for itself. I really do not like the idea of year after year having to depend on several fund raising events to raise money to help pay for putting on the convention. I don t have the specific financial details but here is a generality we can t afford to do this type of convention again. This year the hotel, trail end caller and flooring cost $4900 while the money from ribbon sales was $2800. The hotel cost alone for next year will be increasing. Therefore, if you do the math, we are not getting the support from the state of Kentucky that is needed for a first class state convention.
