2 Directors Note Welcome to the newly-renovated Orthwein Theater and tonight s production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile.Steve Martin starts from the simple but provocative fact that Albert Einstein ( b. 1879) and Pablo Picasso (b. 1881) were the same age when they fundamentally changed their respective fields, science and art. In 1904 they were both moving about Europe in an international culture that centered on Paris. What would it have been like, he postulates, if they had both shown up in the same bar in Paris one night? That bar is the Lapin Agile (the nimble rabbit, ) an apt description of the minds and wits of its proprietors and of all of the customers who show up that night. Their conversations document a moment when anything seemed possible, and two brilliant but egotistical people realized that, though they took very different routes, they had both arrived at the same insight regarding human perception and the nature of the universe.
