CHOMPIN UP WITH THE GATORS ENMS Student Newspaper January 2016 Issue 3, Winter Issue Designed and Edited by: Jazlyn C. (Managing Editor) and Madison C. (Editor in Chief) Twas the Season Zach T., News Editor As the holiday season came and went, the ENMS students seemed very well rested and relaxed after returning from the winter break,on January 6th. Madison C., an 8th grade student at ENMS, said that her grandmother visited and she got to spend time with her during Christmas and New Years. Another 8th grade student, Maria C. said, My cousins came down from college, so I got to spend a lot of time with them; we reunited. In these two weeks off, we learned that students enjoyed visiting their families the most. ENMS 8th grader, Kevin N. stated, We threw splat balls with my family! It seems that most of our students were thankful and had a great time off of school with their family and friends. This school year is going by fast, and Spring Break is just around the corner! 2 Defense leads to offense Sam P., Section Editor They say practice makes perfect! And that sure is correct because ENMS began their second round of intermural sports at the end of November. There are two intermural sports taking place this season: soccer and basketball. Chompin up with the Gators had the opportunity to speak with several students who are playing basketball intramurals in preparation for the upcoming season. Basketball is a physically demanding sport, and the conditioning training that the players here at ENMS complete is...taxing, to say the least. This doesn t scare our team members off, though. I play basketball because I enjoy playing with friends, not just by myself, said Marcos M. grade 8. In addition, two other players, Adrian M. and Tony G., both 8th graders explained what each of their inspirations are to play basketball. Adrian said that,mj, also known as Michael Jordan, was his inspiration because out of 26 basketball shots he made 25, he is still successful and never gave up. Tony G. similarly added, MJ because he made it seem like anybody could be great and came from nobody to somebody. Never give up. Adrian M. told Chompin Up With the Gators that he plays basketball for the Boys and Girls Club also. After listening to what these gators had to say it is apparent that these players are dedicated and use their inspirations to keep them going. Their season will begin the second week of January along with our ENMS Soccer teams. Keep up the great work gators!
No win without work Saoirse B., Staff Writer Sports, such as soccer, are important for students at the middle school age. They help students stay fit and also plays an important role in education. When one exercises, the body releases endorphins that will help open the mind and expand the brain. This helps soak up more knowledge. Soccer is a sport that involves responsibility, teamwork, and a lot of hard work. High expectations is what is coming to the upcoming soccer season at ENMS. Many students are trying out for the Boys and Girls soccer team, but only the best will succeed. This year is hopefully going to come along with many wins for both our boys and girls teams here at ENMS. The boys soccer coach, Mr. Cruz who also works in our ENMS cafeteria, has a passion for soccer. Ms. Wingo is the girls soccer coach. Even though, this is her first year at East Naples Middle School, she was previously an elementary school teacher, so she is familiar with working with kids. Coach Wingo had the intermural teams run a mile before training on Tuesdays and suicides after trainings on Thursdays. Many students also participate in soccer outside of school such as club soccer. Maria C., an eighth grade student here at EMNS says, I love club soccer because it gives me the chance to play against girls that are extremely competitive. We learn a lot and the coaches are very dedicated. Maria C. also told Chompin Up with the Gators that she plays for Florida Fire Juniors U14. Katherine G., Jillian D., Brenda T., and Saoirse B, also play on this team and are all trying out for ENMS girls soccer. This year, all athletic teams are in a different division than in previous years. ENMS is competing against Manatee on January 16, 2016 at ENMS, at 8 AM. See you this Saturday with the rest of the Gators!
Meeting Mr. Cashion Maria C., Staff Writer Growing up, kids seem to have a wild imagination. Teachers, in children s exaggerated minds, are pictured as the mean old ladies that are at school to primarily to get you into trouble. Usually heading into middle schools, students expect the worst of the worst. The elementary school staff always warned us that middle school and high school teachers wouldn t be anything like their kind selves. East Naples however, managed to provide the seventh graders with a very unique individual. Ah, yes. Mr. Cashion. Many students walked in on the first day with the expectation of having an exact repeat of their first year in middle school. They were awfully surprised to have been proven wrong. Being surrounded by kids for quite a while now, Mr. Cashion knew how to make a good first impression. Little did they know, sarcasm would soon take over. He may seem like a professional at this kind of thing, but he recently moved down to teach seventh graders instead of the top dogs. It wasn t bad! I love all students. I miss eighth grade but I m starting to love seventh! he claimed. It seems as if he s handling it very well. Mr. Cashion is used to this kind of transformation. He manages to go from reading books and correcting grammatical errors to a world filled with just field and a ball at his feet. It all started when he was four years old. He immediately fell in love with soccer. As Mr. Cashion grew older he realized the sport was something he would want to keep in his life. My passion for soccer derived from when I played as a kid, my love for coaching derived from me teaching. states the Florida Fire Soccer Coach. He s been extremely successful with both of his careers! However, being a coach and a teacher wasn t his ideal job as a kid. He dreamt of being one of the best basketball players. Obviously, things took an unexpected turn and he wound up in a place where staff, students, and parents absolutely adore him. Middle school? Yeah, it s not so bad. Especially if you have a teacher like Mr. Cashion. Submit your winter-themed drawings for a chance to have it featured in the ENMS newspaper! Drawing Contest All Drawings are due by January 29th. Submit your drawings to Ms. Schlenk in room 52.
Drawing Contest Winner: Astrid N. Welcome to Ms. Schlenk s wonderland Paola Q., Staff Writer Would you like to meet a teacher who loves to run and is a gymnast? Meet Ms. Schlenk. She is currently teaching 7 th grade science and 8 th grade journalism. Most students know her as a teacher, but she is a fantastic cook. Ms. Schlenk s favorite color is gold and she is worth way more than it. Her favorite food is basically anything spicy and she will sink her teeth into anything with some spice. At age 13, Ms. Schlenk was bullied during her middle school years. She said she overcame this situation by, Having the support of my friends, family, and knowing I am strong. Having the support of my friends, family, and knowing I am strong. Ms. Schlenk is someone you would really enjoy talking to. She is really inspirational and did you know she has a second job? Ms. Schlenk is a very hard-working person. She doesn t have any kids but she has fur children. Kobe and Roman are her two sweet but ornery puppies. Try asking her for a picture of them, she ll show you one!
Holiday favorites Kylie L., Graphics Editor As the holidays come around, so do all of the fun animated movies! No matter which holidays you celebrate, there is probably one for you. Some of these movies include A Charlie Brown Christmas, Frosty The Snowman, Eight Crazy Nights, and Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. Chompin Up with the Gators spoke to 17 students at ENMS to find out which was their favorite of these four animated holiday movies. Eight students chose Rudolph The Red- Nosed Reindeer, seven said that they liked A Charlie Brown Christmas, and two students said that Frosty The Snowman was their favorite. Autumn N., an 8 th grader at East Naples Middle School, said that her favorite of these movies is A Charlie Brown Christmas because Snoopy and Lucy are very funny! Linda K., another 8 th grader at ENMS, said that she likes Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer because it s very cute. Although these are some of the most popular ones, there are plenty of other great animated movies that you can enjoy around the holidays! What is your favorite? A WINTER STORY Geety B., Staff Writer As Riley walked home she noticed there were only 15 days left until Christmas. She started to listen to her favorite Christmas songs. Soon enough her friend Lucas walked up to her and started to hold a conversation. Hey! What will you be doing over winter break? asked Lucas. We are going to invite Maya and her mom over and we will be celebrating Christmas! said Riley in excitement. Oh that s cool! I celebrate Hanukkah. said Lucas. What s that? questioned Riley. Hanukkah is a Hebrew or Jewish holiday, there are eight days of celebration. Each day you get a different present. Then, Lucas s mother came to pick him up. Bye guys! said Lucas as he entered his car. Riley and Maya continued to walk home excited that the holidays were approaching. Christmas isn t the only holiday during the winter. They learned that Christmas isn t the only holiday during the winter. Remember to respect all holidays and that we ALL have different traditions and that s what makes us unique and being an original is better that being a copy.

John Green strikes again Aly P., Entertainment Editor Paper Towns was a popular movie this year. It won a Teen Choice Award for Movie of the Summer, and teens everywhere loved the mysterious story of Margo and Quentin. The film, and originally book by John Green, is about a boy named Quentin and his childhood friend Margo. Quentin spent a lifetime loving the adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman. With time, the two became more distant, and never spoke until one day, Margo climbed into Quentin s room late at night through a window, claiming she had unfinished business to take care of. They spent the whole night running around town together, performing risky tasks. The next day, Quentin goes to school, only to discover Margo is gone. Quentin soon finds little clues that she left behind, hinting at where she had gone. She loved mysteries so much, she became one. He refused to give up looking, and was determined to find Margo. Throughout the movie, Quentin fell more in love with the beautiful, rebellious, daring Margo Roth Spiegelman. Teens everywhere loved the mysterious story of Margo and Quentin. Teens everywhere really enjoyed the movie that was inspired by the New York Times Best Seller, Paper Towns. Hannah G. an ENMS 8th grader says, I thought it was cute, and a nice story. Maria C., an 8th grader claims that she loves the movie so much, and thought the book was even better. Jazlyn C., an ENMS student, said she thought the movie was really cute. Jazlyn C. continued by saying that it kind of reminded her of The Fault in our Stars. Other students like Ashley H. said she really liked it because she loves mysteries. Some students did not get a chance to see the movie but read the book. Hannah L., an eighth grader said that she didn t watch the movie but read the book, and said, It was a very moving book. It is one of my favorites. Overall, students at ENMS made a connection with this new release. What do you think? The book, or movie?
Twas the season to watch movies Autumn N., Photo and Graphics Editor What are your favorite holiday films? Elf? How the Grinch Stole Christmas? Home Alone? The Nightmare before Christmas? In a recent poll, ENMS students picked their favorite holiday films. The choices were: Elf, Home Alone, The Nightmare before Christmas, The Polar Express, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Many students chose How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The next favored holiday film at ENMS was, The Nightmare before Christmas, and following close behind was, The Polar Express. How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a fascinating movie about the Grinch, a fictional character created by Dr. Seuss, who despises Christmas and tries to ruin it for all the Whos in Whoville. The Whos love Christmas. After the Grinch interacts with the Whos, he gains love, a bigger heart, and the true meaning of Christmas. He regrets the decisions he made and makes Christmas his favorite holiday instead of despising this holiday. Michelle M., an eighth grader, said, I like the Polar Express because you get the feel of Christmas and it s a chill movie. It s also very imaginative. She said her favorite part in the movie was when the little boy sees Santa at the North Pole and he gives him a little bell and when he can hear the bell ringing. Many ENMS students seemed to enjoy holiday themed movies. Which one is your favorite?
