30 th January, 2012 Dear BSB Parents, As this is the time of year in Bahrain that people can get colds and flu, can I please remind you of our policy regarding student illness and school attendance. When deciding whether to send your child to school in the morning when they re not feeing their usual self, we ask you to please bear in mind that a sick child can cause an entire class and school staff to become sick if sent to school when ill. Students with fever, vomiting, nausea, chills, repeated diarrhea, severe cough, earache, severe sore throat, skin rash or draining sores need to stay home until 24 hours after the symptoms go away. If you have questions, call one of the school nurses for guidance. If these symptoms remain for longer than a day, we advise you to contact your health care provider to see if your child needs to be evaluated by a doctor. In cases of certain communicable diseases (example: strep throat, pink eye) students are to be re-admitted to school after the school nurse reviews a note from the doctor and sees the student. It is extremely important that all courses of medicine such as antibiotics - prescribed by the doctor are completed. When an illness prevents your child from going to school, please notify Ms. Barker, our attendance officer, of your child s absence. You can either call her on or her on: attendance@thebsbh.com BSB Music Academy The two musicians we are profiling this week are: Daniel Gott trained and worked as an Actor-Musician in London, graduating from Rose Bruford College in He has starred in theatre and film, worked extensively throughout the Irish music scene and works regularly throughout Europe as musical director of Bred in the Bone Theatre Company. See for more information. Sachi Kitabatake started playing violin at the age of six and the piano from the age of four. She studied with Kurt Guntner and Nicholas Miller. She won the gold prize at the Kyushu competition in the string category. She studied at the Musashino College of Music in Tokyo and the Royal Academy of Music, where she was awarded a post graduate performance diploma in violin in 2008.

Infants BSB Music Academy Concert The Instrumental teachers from the BSB Music Academy thrilled children and parents in the Infants with impromptu concert on Wednesday. Various instruments where showcased including, the bassoon, the cello, the violin and the accordion. Hands were clapping and feet were tapping throughout the performance as our young rock stars of the future picked up the beat. Many children have been spotted practising their body percussion during break times ever since! Annie MASK is now part of the Performing Arts Academy and Annie is their first public production as part of the academy. The production runs from the 2 nd to the 4th February, with evening performances each night starting at 7pm and matinees on Friday and Saturday starting at 2pm. Tickets are available from the Academies office and from Alosra s coffee shop. The 44 children and 4 adults making up the cast have been rehearsing since September to bring you a superb show. The cast includes many BSB students and one of our teachers. The actors are being ably supported by a production team of 20 adults. The Musical Director of the show is Lydia Martin who runs our Performing Arts Academy. Previous shows staged by MASK have all been sell-out shows and include Bugsy Malone, Oliver and The Wizard of Oz. Annie looks to be a wonderful night of musical entertainment as well and we look forward to seeing you there! Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Juniors Science Fair Last week the Juniors enjoyed BSB's first ever Science Fair organised by the Juniors Science department. The day started with all the whole of the Juniors attending an entertaining MadScience assembly, during which the children learnt some amazing facts about the air around us. For the rest of the day, the children worked in small groups to demonstrate and produce a Science investigation they had prepared in a previous Science lesson. The Infant Sports hall became a lively hive of Science activity and learning, with twenty experiments taking place at the same time around the hall. Throughout the day the children were given the opportunity to tour around all the experiments in their groups, to ask questions and participate in all the activities. The children enjoyed being able to work in teams and for taking the responsibility to supervise their own investigations, with little support from the teachers and parents. The day proved to be a great success with the children enthused and inspired to learn more about Science.

Juniors U11 Football Squad The Juniors U11 Football Squad played their opening games of the season in the newly formed 'Bahrain Schools Sports League' this week at Hamala. BSB Juniors have been training hard since the start of term with Mr Toal and were up against Bayan School in the first round of matches. Bayan School brought one strong team to Hamala to play against a BSB 'A' and 'B' team. In the first game, Bayan played against our 'A' team. BSB started well and tried to break down a stubborn Bayan defence with some neat passes in midfield. The deadlock was broken towards the end of the first half when Richard Thomson skilfully blasted in a volley from the edge of the box, direct from a corner kick. Bayan equalised early in the second half but BSB kept working hard and increased the pressure. More goals followed from Josh Murphy, a second from Thomson and a fine header from a corner by Ali Dawani. A 4-1 stylish victory in their first-ever league game. Well done the 'A' team. The Bayan team then started well against our 'B' team, confident they could improve and beat our second string side. They scored an early goal but underestimated the power of the 'B' team. The 'B' team were well led by Dawani, who was playing in his second game due to injuries. the 'B' team fought back and fired in 4 great goals making it 4-1. Some lapses in concentration in defence allowed Bayan back into the game and they managed to bring it back to 4-4 with the equaliser being the last kick of the game, well into injury time. All in all a great performance from the Junior U11 teams in their first games of the season. Next week is training or possibly a friendly against Riffa Views at Hamala.

Juniors Poetry Competition Over the past two weeks Y3, 4 & 5 have held their annual poetry competition. Every single child took part, memorising a poem of their choice and entertained their classes with a performance. Two winners from each class then went on to compete for the winning position in the year group. Poems learnt, ranged from longer narrative poems such as The Listeners to shorter, more humorous verses from a wide variety of poets. After much debate by the judges (and I m glad I didn t have to make those decisions) the following winners were selected: Y3 Maria Rangwala (3S) Y4 Jawad Otaibi (4A) Y5 Syazana Tiew (5A) The runners-up were Aasha Sharma (3P), Louis O Driscoll (3M), Adam Nasr (4W), Dana Al Tajer(4T), Sripradha Srinivasan (5P) and Khalid Al Moayad (5A) A huge well done to everyone who took part. \ Juniors Annual Debating Competition It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it. Joseph Joubert As a part of their Argument and Debate unit covered in English, the Year 6 pupils held heats to debate a number of exciting and thought-provoking topics. Every child in Year 6 practised speaking before an audience in a series of show-case debates carried out in class. The children displayed a keen interest in the various subject matters and demonstrated a high level of skill in speaking and listening. The Year 6 students held their in-class debates on the motion This House Believes that Homework is Unnecessary. All the contestants competed in a preliminary round of judging where the field was narrowed to a select number of semi-finalists: 6M: Anushka Henry and Mashael Nasir 6B: Hasan Sagheer and Zahra Karim 6S: Woojin Kim and Adedayo Ogunnoiki 6D: Neha Coelho and Arya Krishnan 6H: Saxon Dietrich and Malaika Durrani he much-anticipated final was held on Sunday, 29th January. Two teams of two debated the motion This House Believes that Television has a Negative Effect on Society. The speakers for the motion were Arya Krishnan and Neha Coelho (6D); the speakers against the motion were Hasan Sagheer and Zahra Karim (6B). Following the delivery of the speeches, the debate was opened to the floor, in which members of the audience put questions to the teams. The analytical skills, entertainment, style and strength of the arguments was most impressive! It was a close competition as each House s Proposer and Seconder delivered his/her argument with confidence

and eloquence. However, it was Arya s and Neha s use of evidence/quotes which landed them in 1 st place, thereby naming them 2012 s Debating Competition Winners. Many thanks go out to all the Year 6 participants, respected Judges and all those members of the House who listened attentively and raised relevant questions. We look forward to next year s debate. Senior PE Department Sports Corner School Teams Team training: This is the final week for students to come along and try out for the school volleyball teams.
