2 HEBRON FLYER PAGE 2 NEWS FROM MRS. BERNHARDT S 4 TH GRADE It is hard to believe that we have entered into the fourth nine weeks of the school year! It is Spring on the calendar, and the weather is getting nicer! In Science, we have been talking all about earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides. How does an earthquake happen? How do volcanoes erupt? What kind of damage can landslides create? These questions and many more have been discussed and answered. In Math, we have been learning all about decimals; their place value and how to compare them. We are moving onto geometry next. Round two of ISTEP is coming up next month, and we will be ready! Pioneer Day is an annual event in the 4 th grade. This year was no exception. The day was filled with guest speakers who shared their wood carvings, quilts, and pioneer stories. The students were treated to a performance by the Wrong Way Square Dancers, too! The students were able to make butter, participate in a jug band, and do their very own square dancing performance for students and visitors. The kids had a great time recreating a school day from the early 1800 s. Happy Spring from the 4 th grade!! 3 rd GRADERS TACKLE I-READ by Mrs. Marmolejo The third graders finished taking their first round of ISTEP, had a short break, and then it was off to the races to prepare for I-Read! They worked hard preparing for the test. When it was done, they all said it was so easy! With these tests behind them, we think that the students deserve a much needed brain break. What better way to do that than Spring Break! Enjoy your break third graders! We are very proud of you and the hard work, dedication, and concentration you ve put in getting ready for these tests!! HEBRON LION S CLUB PANCAKE BREAKFAST The Hebron Lions Club will be sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast on Sunday April 9 th from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Hebron High School Cafeteria. There will be a Bike Raffle, Twist and Smiles Balloons, and pictures with the Easter Bunny! Proceeds from this event will go toward purchasing new tires and an alignment for Hebron s Call-A-Ride van. Adults $7.00 Children $5.00 (ages 6-12) Children 5 & under FREE MRS. WITT S 1 ST GRADE NEWS Hello, Spring time! What better way for first graders to begin the season than to participate in a presentation by Miss Allison from the Porter County Recycling & Waste Management Center. When was the last time you held an earthworm? We got a hands-on opportunity on Tuesday, March 21 st to learn what hard workers these creatures really are! Our thanks to Mrs. Kacmarik for arranging our great guest speaker! During our Journal time, we have enjoyed great Science videos from SciShowKids.com as well. We learned that when earthworms tunnel through the soil, they are helping to add pathways for oxygen, water, and important nutrients. Earthworms help plants grow! MRS. MARSHALL S NEWS FROM FOURTH GRADE March 1 st marked the beginning of a very busy month in fourth grade! Our first and extremely important event was ISTEP testing. We have completed the Applied Skills portion of the test. The second section of the test will be in April. In Social Studies we are studying the life of pioneers in Indiana. Pioneer Day is on March 24 th. The day will be filled with many presentations to enrich the students understanding of pioneer life. Topics being covered will be quilting, whittling, quill pen writing, hunting, and square dancing. A storyteller will share pioneer stories with the students. The Wrong Way Squares square dance club will be here to give a demonstration of modern square dancing. The fourth graders will share their square dancing skills and musical skills in the jug band performance. It is a day that students remember for a long time! Students will be working on their research reports about weather. After they have gathered the information and written a report, they will create a power point presentation. The presentations will be shared with grandparents on Grandparent s Day. In Science we are studying weathering and erosion. We are working on adjectives in Language and also practicing writing skills. We are looking forward to Spring Break which begins this weekend. Everyone is really excited about the arrival of Spring and warmer weather!
