1 PERTH PULSE Principal s Report June is finally here. The year seems to have gone by so quickly! We are looking forward to the Perth Annual Fun Fair happening Thursday, June 1 from 3:00 to 7:00. Many parents have worked tirelessly for this event and we thank them for their countless hours. Thanks to Natalie, Charlotte, Shona, Kendell and Tania and the many other volunteers who help make this event so successful. See you all there! We are looking forward to acknowledging and celebrating our Aboriginal Mural Art and Trees planted this year. We will be having a special assembly planned for June 22 starting at 9:30 am. Aboriginal Elder Philip Cote will be the Master of Ceremonies. The ceremony will include a land acknowledgement, smudging, and ceremonial dancing and drumming. Summer Safety: The warm weather is finally here. Students are advised NOT to wear flip flips or crocs to school at all. They are not safe or durable for any activity in the playgrounds and gym. Please ensure your child has a hat for outdoor recess and apply sunscreen every morning. Report Cards will be going home on the last day of school which is Thursday, June 29th. We would like all students to wear red and white for Canada Day too. A final June newsletter will go home as well. Yours in partnership, Andrea McPherson, Proud Perth Ave JPS Dental Screening June 5-7 Toronto Public Health conducts dental screening to help identify children with oral health problems in accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Health requirements for mandatory health programs. The screening is an assessment by a dental hygienist using sterilized instruments. The dental hygienist will assess the need for topical fluoride, scaling, sealant and any other obvious dental needs. As a follow up, only parents whose children are identified as requiring dental services will be notified. A note to that effect will be sent home with your child/ren for your information and action. Please be advised that this screening does not replace dental examination done by a licensed dentist. 3 Lunchroom Supervisors The TDSB is always looking for new and supply Lunchroom Supervisors. At Perth, we are also looking for individuals who could supply during the Lunch Hour. Therefore, we need your stuff! 4 Congratulations to our very own Arwyn Carpenter!! We are so proud of our Mme Carpenter at Perth Ave JPS. Arwyn was named the ETT Arts Educator of the Year This award is given to a teacher who supports arts and cultural activities in the schools and the broader community. Arwyn Carpenter was nominated by her colleagues. Just in case you did not know: Arwyn performed as a young dancer with the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre in Toronto. She learned to speak French in school and reinforced her French by living in Paris in her early 20 s. She holds a BFA in Creative Writing and a MFA is Dance from NYO s Tisch School of the Arts. At OISE where she earned her Bed, she also received U of T s award for Excellence in Elementary Education. Arwyn continues to advocate for dance for all, particularly encouraging male dancers, dancers of all body shapes and abilities. Perth is truly fortunate to have a talented staff member! 5 Junior Soccer Team tournament at Campbell Park On Wednesday, May 17th our Juniors from Grade 4 and 5 competed in a tournament in our very own park Campbell Park, on one of the hottest days in May so far. They played against Montrose, Rawlinson, Regal Road and Dovercourt schools. The team displayed excellent sportsmanship and cooperation in all their games. Thanks to the goalies Aidan C and Mohammad who kept Perth in the game. Go Panthers! Thanks also to our coaches, Mr. Gow and Mr. Bynoe. 6 Perth Fundraisers Perth has had 3 fundraisers in the past year, two of which were for Sick Kids Hospital, the other one was for World Wildlife Fund. Our first fundraiser for Sick Kids hospital, we sold rainbow loom. For example: bracelets, rings, necklaces, and charms. For our first fundraiser we raised: $ Our second fundraiser was in honour of my best friend Aida who was diagnosed at eight years old with juvenile arthritis. For our second fundraiser we raised: $ Finally our third fundraiser was for animals around the world, to help save and protect these animals. To raise the money we sold rainbow coloured cupcakes, during Rainbow Week. And for our last fundraiser we raised: $ The past 3 fundraisers we had were well done. The money we raised will help many people and animals. By Ava and Maria

7 Library News: From Ms. Dueck We have now read all of the Blue Spruce books (Forest of Reading) and each student had the opportunity to vote for their favourite one. The Wolf-birds was the most favourite of all, with Stanley at School next and then The Night Gardener as well. The Night Gardener was a story about a sad town called Grimlock and how a secret night gardener made topiaries out of the trees and brought joy and happiness to the town. If I Had a Gryphon was a story about a girl who imagines that she could own a magical mythical creature pet but in the end she s happy with her hamster pet. Some classes made small creatures using plasticine that were mixtures of animals e.g. octocat. The Artist and Me was a story about the artist Vincent Van Gogh and how he was bullied by others. The narrator of the story is the bully and he realizes he shouldn t have done that. Students saw many Van Gogh art pieces and then were inspired by his peach blossom trees. We made lovely blossom trees to decorate the stage for the spring concert. As the year draws to a close, I am asking students to really get down to looking for any missing books.
