FRANK CHESTER SENIOR CENTER It s been another great week at Frank Chester Senior Center. We have several seniors out of town visiting family but that didn t stop everyone else from coming out to our Father s Day lunch. We had Turkey and Dressing with all the trimmings at our Father s Day lunch. Staff decorated the tables with Father s Day placemats and Red, White and Blue Carnations in vases for all the tables. We had Mylar Balloons scattered around the room to help make our Dad s feel really special. We asked our Dad s to please stand so we could acknowledge how important they are and for their part in helping to see that their children grew up to be caring adults. Staff also had gift sacks for the youngest and oldest Dad present. Vincent Meillilo was our oldest Dad at age 94 and Victor Jackson our youngest at age 51. We had our Dad s come through the serving line first, ensuring that they got plenty on their plate. We also had our Birthday Party and celebrated all of our June birthdays. We had cake and ice cream for everyone, as well as a gift for the youngest and oldest birthday person present. We took our Red Hat group to eat at Sunny s Home Cooking in Valley, Al. They have a great buffet there and the price is unbelievably low. Seniors get the buffet plus a drink for $7.29. It s not a huge buffet but it provides plenty of different items to choose from. The seniors all love this place and ask to go a couple times a year. After we couldn t stuff ourselves anymore, we headed over to the West Point Stevens Outlet store. The ladies were able to snatch some great bargains!

The manager from the Corporate office in New York happen to be there and was impressed by our large group (26 of us went), that she helped some of the ladies carry their purchases out and asked if she could snap a picture of us in our Red Hat Attire to send back to the office. We finally got everyone out of the store and loaded the vans back up and headed for home. Everyone had a great time and can t wait for our next outing. FOX COMMUNITY CENTER This week Alice Brewer, director of the Columbus Parks and Recreation Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and who is also a Senior Center director joined by Reggie Thompson, a Columbus Parks and Recreation Senior Center director attended the Points of Light National Conference on Volunteerism and Service in Washington, D.C. Pictured below is Alice and Reggie with Neil Bush, Chairman of the Points of Light Foundation.

FLUELLEN RECREATION CENTER Last week, Fluellen Recreation Center implemented a new program for kids and adults alike. The Fluellen Hip-Hop Dance Club is a fun and creative way for kids and adults to get good exercise and learn the new latest dance moves in the process. The class is offered every Friday beginning at 5p.m. Patrons of all ages are welcome to come and boogie-down with FRC!

CULTURAL ARTS The Cultural Arts section of Parks and Recreation offers many classes in visual arts and this week we are highlighting our Glass Fusing and Slumping Programs and Classes. Fusing and Slumping classes are taught by Elizabeth Sabatino every quarter. She teaches people how to cut glass, arranging glass, what glass melts or fuses together, and how to slump a fused sheet into a bowl, plate, or vase. After people take the beginning class they can than work independently as a member to create on their own. Elizabeth started this program 4 years ago, and it has grown to over 75 members and full classes every quarter. FY13 we collected over $5000 in sales of glass and $2000 in membership fees. The best part is all of the wonderful glass that has been created over the years. For more information classes or programs for any of the art or pottery classes contact Lisa Castile at (706) , lcastile@columbusga.org, or stop by Britt David Studio, Psalmond Road Pottery Studio, or Northside Pottery Studio.

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION It was another great week at Pop Austin Recreation Center. The Therapeutic Program started the week off with Aquatics at Rigdon Park Pool. The participants at Pop Austin learned about water safety and had a blast with their peers at the pool. We ended the day with some open recreation time in the game room; enjoying games of pool, table ice hokey, Wii bowling and shuffleboard. This week during arts & crafts some of the participants decorated sea shells, while others got creative with the legos. We ended the program this week with our Western Theme Birthday lunch. Participants dressed up in their western attire, enjoyed country music, panned for gold and took pictures for the wanted ad. We had a blast!
