London Fields Post Issue 23 Term Please note due to staff training the last day of the summer term is now the 18th July. You might know her as Miss Betcher, some of you might now know her as Mrs Gillard but others refer to her as The Grand High Witch! Yes, Mrs Gillard has a secret! The thing she despises most in the world is Yes, you ve guessed it.....children! So why does she work in a school I hear you ask? Well, it is all part of her grand master plan! This morning she was spotted offering sweets to joyful, innocent children. However, we now have a sneaky suspicion that this was part of a cunning plan! Just out of interest have you seen some of her expupils recently? Rumours are some of them have grown fur!!!!! A message from Mrs Gillard (AKA The Grand High Witch) Thank you to everyone who helped make World Book Day 2014 such a memorable day! The children s costumes were amazing and very creative. Thank you to everyone at home who got involved and helped out with the costume making. We all had great fun showing off our costumes and talking about Roald Dahl s characters. Thank you to the visitors from the Roald Dahl Museum for delivering lots of fantastic workshops and story telling sessions the children thoroughly enjoyed them. And a big thank you to the teachers too for getting into character! However, I do think it is about time Mr Lawson shaved off his beard did you see how much food he had tangled up in it! Disgusting!!!!!

Reception Yesterday was a quite a hairy day to be in Reception. There were superheroes flying around, pirates trying to dig up treasure and countless heroines from fairy tales being very demanding. Then just when the teachers thought it was safe to come out from the cupboards William (of Just William fame) arrived! Now that s a whole other story.

Year 1 Today was World Book Day! Year 1 had lots of fun dressing up as Roald Dahl characters and many other book characters. We went to our workshop where the lady told us two great stories. The first story was Little Red Riding hood. The second story was the three little pigs. We had lots of fun getting up and acting out the characters.

Year 2 In year 2 we had a selection of excellent costumes such as Fantastic Mr Fox, Matilda, Mike TV, Miss Honey, Sophie (BFG) and of course the marvellous Oompa Loompas!!! In our workshop from the Roald Dahl Museum, we acted out his version of The Little Red Riding Hood.

Year 3 Miss Trunchbull takes control! The Trunchbull brought along her handy sidekick, the disgusting Mr Twit to control proceedings in Elm Class for World Book Day. All of year 3 took part in a fantastic workshop that taught us about Roald Dahl the man. We also got the chance to re-write the ending of the Roald Dahl classic, the Enormous Crocodile, and act out Roald s alternative ending to Little Red Riding Hood. Take a look at our excellent costumes! Did you know the Enormous Crocodile was inspired from Roald Dahl s time in Africa? Ismael, Oak Class I had no idea Roald Dahl was so tall! Mohammad, Elm Class.

Year 4 What a day! It started with everyone frantically discussing our fabulous costumes and guessing everyone s characters. After that it was time for literacy and maths but then We had an amazing Roald Dahl Workshop! Did you know that Roald Dahl fought in the war, survived and plane crash AND damaged his spine?! And that s not even the disgusting part He kept the shavings from his spine AND his hip bone, on his desk, as inspiration! The best part of the workshop was getting the chance to build our own words, combing animals and superpowers together! Can anyone remember what a Milliratvisible was? By Freddie and Jiayi

Year Yesterday, in year 5 we had people from the Roald Dahl Museum come in and talk to us about Roald Dahl, the history of his life and how he got the inspiration to write his books. They showed us and talked to us about weird things such as a plaster cast of Roald Dahl s hip bone and the shavings of his spine. We even came up with our own weird Roald Dahl style character! We all had to dress up as a character from one of his books. A lot of us dressed up as Mr Willy Wonka and some as George from George s Marvellous Medicine. There were also quite a few lady birds scampering around the school too! We all had a fantastic world book day and can t wait for the next one! Words by two Willy Wonkas (Sarah and Ziyaad) 5 I can t believe Augustus Gloop, a lady bird and an Umpa Lumpa were my teachers today!

Year 6 In our workshop we learned all about how Roald Dahl was inspired to write all of his fantastic stories including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We even did some group work and thought of some delicious treats of our own just like Roald Dahl did. Look at some of our amazing costumes! Can you guess who we are?

Come to our Fairtrade exhibition and see all the work we have been doing for Fairtrade Fortnight such as....the winning entries to the London Fields Fairtrade Snack challenge the adverts that each class filmed to advertise their Fairtrade products photos of our cookery activities with Fairtrade products AND don t forget to......pick up a copy of our handwritten London Fields Fairtrade cookery book for a bargain price!

RE Afternoon at London Fields On Friday 28 th February London Fields held an RE EXTRAVAGANZA! Each class in Key Stage Two presented their RE topic to another class! See what they got up to!..and there s more where that came from!!!! WELL DONE to everyone who was involved! Miss Bysshe

Year 6 investigates.who did the suitcase belong to? Year 6 took a trip to Hackney Museum to investigate the contents of a particular suitcase. Using our keen detective skills we examined the evidence and found various clues about the owner. We discovered how old the owner was, where they lived, what they liked doing and why they had to leave Hackney during the war. We compared our findings in an ARP warden s shelter and looked at other primary and secondary sources which told us more about our mystery evacuee child. We learnt that many children went looking for bits of shrapnel after a night of bombing and took them to school to show them to their friends. Our suitcase owner had taken this piece with him when he was evacuated! We learnt that the black dots on this map show how many bombs were dropped in Hackney during just one night of the Blitz. We came away feeling as if we had walked in Sidney James shoes for the afternoon and were quite glad to get back to our lovely safe classroom!

Palm class Words Mr Bass Here in Palm class we love to read, we just can t get enough of it! We feel everyone should, so each week we will be recommending our favourite books to the entire school! The Anne Fine author focus has finished! Our new author is Michael Morpurgo! We will be recommending his books from next week! The Bass family library! My name is I would like to recommend Hi-Tech World Cool Stuff to London Fields Primary School. One reason is it is a non-fiction book and has lots of information about new technology! I enjoyed it because it tells you about some new life saving equipment like the rescue reel! So reading it might one day help you save a life!

London Fields has some sports superstars! Joshua Aaron Joshua is a keen ice hockey player and recently won this fantastic trophy! Well done Joshua, this is very impressive! Aaron is a member of a Karate club outside of school and took part in a tournament Looking at his smile and his medal, how do you think it went?!

Maths Investigations The children have again had lots of fun carrying out their weekly maths investigations. Below are the links and starting points to each of the investigations. Please do speak to the children about them as although two year groups may have started on the same problem the direction they will have taken with it will have been determined by how the children in each class chose to approach it and often the children are able to go far beyond these starting points. Years 1 and 2 Year 5 Years 3 and 4 Would you like to watch and help with one of your child s maths lessons? If you haven t already organised to come and help with one of our Friday maths investigations then please speak to your child s teacher.

London Fields brings the laughter! Hi! I m Casper from ELM class! Welcome to my weekly jokes column! I am in charge of all things funny at the London Fields Post so if you have any hilarious (but suitable) jokes for the paper, then come and find me! We might not always have space for all of them but I promise to try! These ones are some of my favourites, enjoy! How do you make a number one disappear? Put a g in front of it and it is gone. Why did the rooster cross the road? To prove he wasn t a chicken. Casper What is a sea monster s favourite meal? Fish and ships. This week in photography club we started thinking about composition and the rule of thirds. I have looked through them and this week my favourite photo was taken by Kiera- Faye!

Bring me the correct answer to the prize question on a piece of paper (you can find me in Rimu class) and you could be picked at random to receive a special geography prize! Yes, this is Miss Goddard in her jungle gear! Let s take a closer look at Did you know The capital city of Oman is Muskat, which can be found on the coast. Arabic is the official language of Oman. Other languages in Oman are English, Urdu, and other Indian dialects spoken by Indian immigrants and tourists. The majority of people who live in Oman are Muslim. Prize question: What is the currency used in Oman? Well done to Tanvir in Lime who correctly identified Abel Tasman as the explorer who discovered New Zealand.

Information for Parents and Carers Year 2 SATs Meeting Thursday 20th March 3.45pm-4.00pm To keep parents and carers informed about the work children in Year 2 are doing to prepare for their SATs there will be a short meeting on the 20th March. The Year 2 teachers and Year Group Leaders will give advice about how best to support your child at home. Next week our topic in Maths will be: The four operations AR BOOK SEARCH. Can parents/children be mindful of any AR books which are currently at home? The book levels are extremely low (especially chapter books) with many children not able to take particular books home. The school has already ordered new titles and put lots of books out throughout the year. It is very important books are brought back regularly so that we can restock and supply a wide range of titles to all children enrolled for AR. We spend a lot of money on Accelerated Reader and Library books and cannot afford to replace them so quickly. Thanks for your continued support.
