The following recollections or year book wishes were submitted from numerous sources. None are intended to be embarrassing but hopefully relate some aspects of school that are a bit humorous (at least they are now). Feel free to pass on your own quotes or anecdotes to the reunion committee for inclusion.
Usually, when a guy buys a pitcher, the other guy buys back.usually! Chris Vulture Volney at the Cottage Inn trying to convince Frank Zulli to buy a round
Bro. Breheny was working hard to convince his Speech class of how important it would be to develop their public speaking skills, no matter the future career choice. Mr. Tinney. Can you please give us an example to demonstrate this concept? Shine! Shine! Shine! replied our man Don, giving his best ferry boat shoeshine man impersonation.
When you re hot keep shooting. When you re not hot, keep shooting until you get hot and then keep shooting because you are hot. Anthony Satch Sierra waxing philosophically on his approach to heaving the basketball
Bro. Sable had a very soft speaking voice, rarely raised it, and demanded quiet in class. If someone was chatty, Brother would just stop teaching and give the offender the look. One day, a classmate insisted on talking to a neighbor despite getting 3 looks. Bro. Sable simply strolled to the back of the room, picked up the offending party s desk (with him in it) and tossed desk and student into the hallway in a big heap and returned to a quiet class.
Bro. Sable s other favorite method for quickly getting to an inattentive or disruptive student in the last seat of a row was to simply grab the first desk and shove the entire row back so that the offender got slammed into the back wall.
Whoopsie diddley daisy. Brother Collins exclamation for breaking chalk, dropping anything, or uncovering inappropriate behavior within his class.
Keep practicing up the park and someday you ll be in my class. Jim Hazz Harrigan providing sage advice for one aspiring chucker
After providing his chemistry class with all the givens for a particular problem, Bro. Lopez surveyed the class for a victim to provide the answer. Mr. Chorman, do you have the answer? Yes Brother what? Yen, shamrocks, rubles??? You had to know your units.
One day on noticing that Dan Haley s hair was too long (i.e. over the collar), Bro. Sable inquired as to the reason. My barber died, Brother. Next day, a similar observation and question. My barber is still dead, Brother. Ouch!
We were learning and practicing parallel bar maneuvers in gym class when there was a loud snap. Noticing a new elbowlike bend in his arm, Bill Randle reported the problem to Al Forte. Uhh Mr. Forte. My arm broke. No it s not. I haven t ever had a student break a bone in one of my gym classes. Uhh Mr. Forte. My arm broke.
Most tightly wound teacher?? Whenever you got Brother Sirignano a little ticked off, the face would turn purple, the veins would pop, and then watch out. Freshman year, Chris Savery refused to come to the front of Bio Lab to take his lumps. Brother hopped up on the lab desks and in 3 bounds took Chris out with a flying tackle at the back of the room. Chris Marazzo complained about a wrong answer on a quiz. A karate chop to the neck turned the complaint to a gurgle. Brother challenged Don Tinney to a boxing match in the gym.
Most effective drills?? How about Latin with Bro Combe? Brother would walk down the aisle asking for rapid fire conjugation or declensions. He would never say if right or wrong. Everyone was responsible for correcting the mistakes ahead of them. The wrong answerer and everyone up to the correction had to hold their hand out for a hard whack with a ruler. Pull back and you got 5. We cheered every whack and brought Brother a metal ruler when his wooden one broke. Puer ad terram cadit.
Most dangerous class? Mr. Meibauer s Mechanical Drawing Mike Sciabbarrasi and Nick Vitale were extremely proficient in wielding T-Squares in ways that Connie didn t teach. Getting hooked from behind while bending over your drawing left a lasting impression. We started wearing cups in Mechanical Drawing.
Tan. Controversial answer supplied by Jim Hazz Harrigan on It s Academic. Originally ruled as incorrect, Tan was later accepted as a form of the correct answer Tangent after Hazz badgered the host into accepting it.
Least favorite punishment for talking?? How about inserting a piece of chalk between offender s molars and forcing them to give it a good grinding. One of Mr. Greet s favorites Yuch!
All you guys are invited to come to my place after the game for a BBQ to celebrate Doherty s undefeated season. Vic Golat, August 13, 1972 extending an invitation to members of Set s OC prior to the final game (Set s 13 Dohertys 10) Set s OC players that thanked Vic for the brats and beer: J. Gagliardi, Bruscella, Randle, Somma, Chiodo, DeCarlo, Goffred, Garvin, P. Phillips, Ramos, O Donnell, Mattimore, Paluzsek Note: Doherty s was still league champs.
Last minute Christmas shopping? No prob. As related by Rich Bringoli It was around Christmas time and I mentioned to Tom Abarno that I didn t know what to get for my girl. Tom says, come with me, I think I can help. Tom opens his locker and reveals a variety of articles, toiletries, perfume etc and lets me know they are $5 each. Problem solved. In Senior Year, if you needed something (gift, fake ID, whatever), there was a pretty good chance you could get it with a visit to the Barn- Yard.
Need help finding the words needed to get a date? No problem. Just ask Brother Dausch As related by Tom Ferrara It was one day after school in I was just about to use the pay phone at MFHS to call a Countess Moore girl and ask her out on a date. Brother Dausch came by and asked me what I was doing so I told him. Brother advised me exactly what to say and how to say it. I called, used Brother s advice and got the date. No kidding!! In 2007, Brother Dausch, living in Mississippi, will celebrate his 50 th year with the Christian Brothers. He sends his regrets but notes: You Farrell boys always knew how to have a good time.
As related by Mrs. Marie Dente, Brian Dente s mother: Brother Combe was Brian s home room teacher. Brian couldn't go to school one day because of a snow storm, and when he returned to class, Brother Combe wanted a note for his absence, and when Brian didn't have one and said "My Mother didn't..." Brother Combe said, "Your Mother?"... and gave Brian detention! When they wheeled Brian into the detention room and put his wheel chair on a square, the other kids there went into shock. Meanwhile, the word was passed around that this kid had detention, and all the priests and brothers were tip toeing down the hall and peeking into the room to see this kid - in the wheelchair- with a smile on his face from ear to ear - because he now was "one of the guys". His Aunts and Uncles called him up congratulating him and his "academic" achievement. It had to be the happiest day of his short life.
