5 Family Link Friendship Definition FRIENDSHIP is the warm feeling between two or more people. It means to show love, care, respect, and kindness towards others. Scripture Reference John 15:15 - I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. Reflection: In an age of digital technology, it is possible to befriend someone with the touch of a button -- no need to spend time together, to share ideas and insights, to offer support, encouragement, or challenge. Saint Paul would be flabbergasted. His friendship with Timothy was forged through their missionary travels and a shared zeal for the Gospel. Paul expected great things of his young friend and in return, leaned upon him for support while imprisoned and facing execution. The two affirm an anonymous writer s observation that The best things in life aren t things they re your friends. In calling his disciples, friends, Jesus established a warm and intimate relationship that would sustain them through the difficult days and years that followed his death, Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven. In doing so, he called them and us to friendship with his Father. Such a relationship can only grow stronger if we dedicate time and energy to it through prayer, faith, and the practice of virtue. And, happily, we will never face the dilemma of being unfriended by a God whose love is everlasting. Family Activity: Talk together about people you consider family friends. What characterizes your relationship with them? Then discuss the friends each individual in the family cherishes and why. Pay attention to how the friend of one person in the family can be accepted as a family friend. Plan a friendship party and gather together all friends of the family who are able to attend. Send an e-card or other message to those who can t be there and express your appreciation for their friendship and love. Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to be a faithful friend through love, forgiveness, and understanding. May my friendship with you grow stronger each day. Amen.
