The Sad and Happy Day Bible Verse: Luke 24: 34 - The Lord is risen indeed. Story References: Matthew 26:1-4, 27-31, Luke 24:1-10, Mark 16:1-11, John 20:1:18 Printable Bible Verse Cards: Print out the cards on card stock and hand them out to each student. KJV (PDF Pattern) (Printing Problems?) Teaching Concepts: Children learn the sad story of Jesus death, and the happy results of his resurrection. Early Arrivers Activity 1. Make a Moveable Sad and Happy Mary Picture What you will need: Card Stock, Colored Pencils or Crayons, brass brads, and Scissors. What to do: 1. Before class print on Page 7 out the patterns onto card stock. He was dead, but now He is risen! 2. Cut out the arms and long tabs. Punch holes in the arms and the tab. Stick a brad through the holes in the arms and then through the long tab as shown in the picture to the right. The arms should move freely on the tab. 3. Cut out the face (optional) so that when the tab is pulled up and down the face will change from happy to sad. If you don t cut out the face, the face will just stay happy as the arms move up and down. 4. Cut slits in the picture of Mary at the arm holes and at the top and bottom of the picture as shown. Insert the arms from the back of the picture through the holes in the arms. Insert the top and bottom of the tabs from the back through the top and bottom slits. Page 2

5. Fold the picture in half covering the back tab. Glue it shut at the sides, but make sure the tab still moves freely. 6. In class have your children color the picture. 2. Play a Folded Paper Game with the Children as They Arrive What you will need: Paper, Colored Pencils and Scissors How to make: 1. Print out the Pattern on Page 8 and cut around the outside of the pattern. 2. First fold the paper in half so that the pictures are facing out by bringing two opposite corners together to form a large triangle, unfold, and bring the other two corners together to make a triangle and unfold. 3. Fold all the corners into the center so that they meet at the center. You should now have a square. 4. Turn the paper over and fold all the corners into the center again to form even a smaller square. 5. Fold the square in half, unfold, and then fold the square in half the opposite direction. Insert your thumbs and index fingers into the four flaps that formed, pulling them out so that they all form a point at the top. To play the game have a child pick one of the faces that are visible when the paper game is closed. When the child picks a face spell out the word. Spell out sad if he picks a sad face, and happy if he picks a happy face by opening and closing one side of the game for each letter. To open one side, spread your thumbs and index fingers apart on each hand but keep your index fingers and your thumbs touching each other through the paper, then bring them back together. To open the other side pull your hands apart but keep your fingers pinched together, then put them back together again. Keep doing this until you have spelled out the word. Page 3

Now let the child pick another picture that is visible inside the game. Say one word of the memory verse each time you open or close the game. Let the child pick another picture and open up the folded paper and read what it says under that picture. The child should do what it says to do. Keep playing until all the children have had a chance to play. 3. Make a Sad Face/Happy Face Puppet Before class cut out two, five-inch circles from poster board for each puppet. Glue the circles back to back onto a large craft stick. In class have your children draw a happy face on one side and a sad face on the other. Let them glue or tape on yarn hair. The Lesson Preparation: You will need a sad-face/happy-face puppet or the sad and happy Mary craft. Hold up the sad-face side when you are talking about something sad in the story and hold up the happy-face side when you are talking about something happy in the story. As an introduction to the story, ask your children to tell you things that make them sad. (Hold up the sad-face puppet.) Then ask them to tell you things that make them happy. (Hold up the happy-face puppet.) Today, we re going to hear a story about a sad day and a very happy day. When you hear the word sad, show me the sad-face side of your puppet; and when you hear the word happy, show me the happy-faced side of your puppet. It was a happy time of the year; the Passover celebration was going to start in just two days. Everyone was getting prepared, but Jesus had some sad news for his disciples. He told them, Soon some people are going to take me away to be killed. Jesus friends were very sad to hear this. They didn t understand why anyone would want to kill Jesus. He made people very happy. He had healed the sick, made blind people see again, and showed them how to be truly happy. Jesus knew that there were some people who were jealous of him because he was getting all the attention. These bad people wanted to kill Jesus. But Jesus wasn t sad because he knew that it was all in God s plan. He told them to be happy because he would not stay dead for very long. Jesus knew that the sad day would turn into a happy day. Everything happened exactly like he told them it would. Jesus let the people nail him to the cross. His friends were very sad on that day. They placed Jesus body in a tomb in a garden and a huge rock was put in front of the door to the tomb. Three days later, Mary and Mary Magdalene went to the tomb very early in the morning. There was a big earthquake and an angel came down from heaven and rolled the stone away! The guards that were there were so scared that they fainted. The angel spoke to the women, Don t be afraid! Jesus isn t Page 4

here; he came back to life again, just like he said he would. The women were so excited and happy; they ran to tell Jesus disciples the good news! As they ran, suddenly Jesus was right in front of them. He said, Good morning! Go tell the others that I am alive! The women went to tell the disciples that Jesus was alive. They were all so happy. Soon the good news was spreading everywhere. And that is why I am telling you the good news today. 1. Easter Color Sheet What you will need: Paper, and crayons or markers Crafts How to make: Print out the Pattern on Page 9 and have the children color the picture. Activities 1. Play Easter Three-in-a-Row Game 1. Before class print out the Three-in-a-Row Cards and the Teacher s Cards. (Pages 10-21) 2. Cut the Teacher s cards apart and place them in a bag. 3. In class give each child a card. Provide markers such as button, fun foam shapes, coins, etc. for the children to use. 4. Mix up the cards in the bag and have a child pull one out. Show all Page 5

the children the card and ask them if they know what the picture on the card has to do with Easter. If they don t know, give them a short explanation and then have them place a marker on their card over the picture if they have it. Keep playing until a child gets three makers in a row, diagonally, vertically, or horizontally. 3. Play a Dice Review Game 1. Before class print out the Die Pattern on Page 22 onto card stock, cut it out and glue it together. 2. In class have your children sit in a circle and take turns throwing the die. If a happy face is face up, the child should say something happy that happened in the story. If a sad face lands face up, the child should say something happy that happened in the story. If a child rolls hop like a rabbit, he should get up an jump around. If child rolls Get a snack, give him his snack. Keep playing until all the children have received a snack. Easter Morning Songs (Sing to the tune of Mary had a Little Lamb ) Written by Narita Roady Jesus died for you and me You and me You and me Jesus died for you and me on the cruel cross They put him in an empty tomb Empty tomb Empty tomb They put him in an empty tomb and rolled the stone in place Early Easter morning Morning Morning Early Easter morning He came back life Now He lives in Heaven Heaven Heaven Now He lives in heaven with His Father, God Page 6
