BEAVERCREEK JUNIORETTES DANCE TEAM GENERAL INFORMATION RULES/POLICIES/EXPECTATIONS Co-Director/Choreographer: Katie Seitz Coach Katie Seitz is a sixth grade language arts teacher at Ferguson Middle School. Miss Seitz is very involved with coaching and advising several other groups and teams at Ferguson, but her heart and passion are won by the Juniorettes. She began dancing at a very young age, learning and dancing at studios such as the Dayton Ballet, Pontecorvo, and Dance Expressions. Miss Seitz was a member of competitive dance teams in her junior high and high school years, including being the co-captain of Vantasia Dance Team and then the captain of the Butler Kickline. She also competed through the Dance Expressions Dance studio while in high school, both solo and ensemble contests. In college at Miami University, Miss Seitz was on the first-ever team of the Miami Dance Team to attend NDA Nationals in Daytona, FL. The team placed in the top 10 college dance teams in the nation. Since college, Miss Seitz has done some choreography and remained in touch with the dance world. In 2010, she began her journey with the Juniorettes Dance Team which she hopes to continue for years to come! Co-Director/Coach : Robin Ferguson Robin has many years of dance team experience as well as 13 years of coaching experience (many which include Juniorettes years ago). Currently she also Coaches Minis Dance Team with her sister and is the Director of Creekettes. Robin has 16 years of experience in the teaching/administration early childhood education field. She has owned Bright Beginnings/Ferguson s Child Development Center since 1997 and helps take care of about 80 families and 30 teachers. She grew up in Beavercreek (and on the dance teams) and currently lives in Beavercreek with my husband, David of almost 20 years. They have 3 children (Brianna 11, Jaelee-8, Olivia-5) and a yellow lab, Sunny, a black lab puppy, Tinker and a chinchilla. She enjoys seeing all the girls grow as dancers and individuals while participating on the dance teams! GOAL/AFFILIATION: The Juniorettes Dance Team is made up of girls from both Ankeney and Ferguson Middle Schools. The dance team supports their school and community by performing their entertaining pom and jazz routines at various events and competitions throughout the year! This team of talented girls is dedicated to learning and perfecting their dance technique and routines all while having fun, making lifelong friendships and great memories along the way! This year-long sport involves an incredible amount of discipline, responsibility, physical conditioning, positive attitude, teamwork and leadership skills. EXPECTATIONS OF A JUNIORETTE PRIORITY: Juniorettes must come first when and if there shall be a conflict with any other outside activities in which team members participate. Juniorettes are encouraged to be well-rounded athletes and involvement in various school and community activities is encouraged. However, these activities must come 2 nd. To Juniorettes and our schedule. Attending practices, performances, team building activities, etc. must take precedent over any other activity. Juniorettes are encouraged to take additional dance classes at area studios. Juniorettes will have a summer technique camp and technique classes throughout the dance season attendance will be mandatory for these as well. We realize that every family has a different expectation of their children and their schedules. While some children can handle a 24/7 schedule and maintain a great attitude and great grades. Others cannot. We must have dancers that are well-rested and dedicated to their team in order to have a successful team and season. This requires a positive attitude and 110% effort at practices and performances. Please keep our expectations in mind when scheduling your child s extra-curricular activities. Participation in sports and/or activities (such as but not limited to: Basketball and Cheerleading) that require attendance during our competition schedule (November through April) are not allowed.
General Code of Conduct Be the kind of teammate and friend you would like to have. Be polite to each other and adults. Express your emotions in a mature, responsible way. Speak positively about other team members, parents, other teams, coaches, etc. Never post anything negative about Juniorettes or anyone affiliated on a social networking site (facebook, twitter, myspace, etc.) Believe that anything is possible if you put your mind to it! Follow the Beavercreek City Schools Code of Conduct at all times. If you quit the team, you will not be permitted to rejoin. (This excludes special cases such as moving or certain family situations). PRACTICES: Practice will average 4 5 hours a week depending on our technique schedule. Practices will be held mostly at Ferguson and/or Ankeney Middle Schools. Technique practices will be scheduled in advance. Be on time. Bring and wear what you are required to bring and wear. Have a positive attitude and willingness to work. Encourage each other. Do not chew gum. Pull your hair up and out of your face. If you bring your cell phone, place it in the cell phone container at the beginning of practice and pick it up at the end. Come to practice with a stomach that will not bother you not too hungry and not too full. Bring a water bottle. Focus to memorize the routines and the little details when we clean them. Have your parents pick you up on time, or arrange another ride home. Leave your stresses, worries, and troubles at the door when you walk into practice. Let practice be a time to focus on our team and strengthening yourself. NO WHINING! Absolutely no gossiping or bullying of teammates will be tolerated. Do what your coach asks the first time you are asked. PRACTICE ATTIRE: Girls should come ready to practice and dressed in the following: Dance tights or leggings/shorts Dance shoes Snug fitting top Hair up and secured Running shoes/socks ATTENDANCE Remember this is a team and the quality of our performance requires the participation of every team member. The practice prior to a performance is ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY. Should a member not be at this practice they may not be eligible to perform at the competition. This decision depends on several factors including whether or not the dancer knows all the changes to the routine and can perform the routine as well as her teammates. Each circumstance will be different and we ask that parents respect the directors and coaches decision. Every opportunity will be made to ensure that the girls perform at every competition/performance. At any time during the season, if a member does not know the routine, they may not be able to compete. This should never happen as long as the girls attend practice regularly and pay attention to the coaches.
ILLNESS/INJURY If a child does not attend school due to illness, they should not participate at practice. Whether or not a child is well enough to attend practice is a parental decision, not a coaches/director. During unforeseen circumstances (injury/illness, etc), it may not be possible for your daughter to continue as an active member of the dance team. Please understand that once items, uniforms, etc. are ordered, fees cannot be returned. GRADES/ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS We are students first and dancers second. You must maintain all passing grades to be a part of this team. Be a good student. Show your teachers that Juniorettes are capable, responsible, polite young ladies with great attitudes. If you fail a class, you will not be allowed to participate in Juniorettes until the next quarter s report card shows that you have passed all of your classes. I will not allow you to spend your time on this team if you should be spending it on your academics. PERFORMANCES Transportation to performances is the responsibility of each family Arrive in your Juniorette warm up jacket and pants. Absolutely no negative talk about other teams while at competitions. We are better than that. This applies to dancers and their families. This includes while being in the stands, in the restrooms, in the cafeteria, in the room, etc. We want to be a classy team who does not need to put others down to build ourselves up. Cheer on other teams the way you d want them to cheer you on! Cover your costume while eating. No PDA. No Juniorette should ever be by herself sit as a team, eat in groups, always stay together. We are one! Comply with makeup and costume uniformity. Bring extra tights, shoes, etc. Be over-prepared! Listen for directions on when to be in the room, ready, etc. Following the schedule is very important on performance days. You must have attended the practice before the performance in order to perform. DISCLIPINE The inability to abide by any of the Policies, Expectations, Rules may result in any of the following: Running laps, doing push-ups, etc. Doing a routine by yourself after practice or at a water break. The entire team doing strenuous physical work, such as extra toe touches, kicks, running, etc. Being benched from a performance. A meeting with the team member, parent(s), and coaches. Removal from the team. SPORTSMANSHIP: We put EMPHASIS on the girls performing their best and feeling good about their performance, not on winning 1 st. place. Since we are judged by different judges at each competition, it is highly subjective scoring. Therefore, even though winning is nice, we want the girls to have fun and feel good about their performance! Parents and friends are also encouraged to cheer on all the girls and all the teams! SOCIAL FUNCTIONS: Juniorette Social/Team Building Functions will be planned as a team. FINANCIAL OBLIGATION A payment schedule is attached. It s important that payments be made in a timely manner, so that orders can be placed all at once. Please pay your dues on time. Money cannot be refunded. If a team member quits the team or is otherwise removed, money will not be refunded.
FUND-RAISING: We will be involved in a Kroger Card Fundraiser throughout the year as well as a few other ones. Any money raised through fundraising will be taken into consideration and positively reflect in the individual payments required at the end of the season. COMPETITIONS: Early in the year all the coaches sit down and decide which competitions we will all be attending. The decisions are made keeping in mind the following factors: cost, location, dates. Competitions are usually located in the Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus and Indianapolis Areas and are held January thru April on either a Saturday or Sunday. They are held usually in High School Gyms and the competition is hosted by the home dance team. The dates and locations of the competitions are normally released in October/November. After we know which ones we will attend, you will be immediately notified. The exact times of the competitions are never known until about 5 days prior to the competition date. We receive these times in the mail or and immediately pass the information on to the team via once available. A good guess on the time involved on a competition day is 9am 6pm. Where to meet, what to wear, what to bring, approximate performance times and award times and maps are provided to the parents at the practice prior to the competition. There is admission to get into the competitions. The team is free; however I would plan on an average of $5-$7 per person. There is also food available for purchase in the cafeterias for lunch, dinner, etc. Awards: All team members are expected to stay for awards after the competition. Car-pooling is also suggested, therefore helping parents if they need to be in more than 1 place at a time! STATE/NATIONAL COMPETITION State/National Competitions are determined by date and location. They are usually on a Saturday and we blocked about 20 hotel rooms for our team and let the parents make reservations under this block if they wanted. Some parents left for home on Saturday, while others stayed a second night and left Sunday! PARENT SUPPORT: We LOVE OUR MOM s (and dad s too!)! For all those that are new to the dance team world it can be quite overwhelming! The coaches encourage the parents to become involved by helping out with the team during the year. It s a great way to feel a part of the dance team family! There are so many opportunities to help just please ask! We want to make sure efforts are not duplicated and that we all are on the same page! Parent Meetings are held every couple months for during the last minutes of practice. Reminders/ s will be sent out in advance of these meetings. PARENTS/SIBLINGS AT PRACTICE: Parents/siblings should not expect to be at practices. This helps keep noise to a minimum and the girls practice better. Practices are always open door the last 10 minutes of each practice so the girls can show what they have learned for their parents. However, if you would like to observe a practice(s) - please just let us know it s not a problem. BANQUET: A banquet is held at the end of each season. Awards, certificates, etc. are presented at this time. The banquet is a family event! COMMUNICATION: A team roster and summer practice dates/ times are distributed at the first meeting. The majority of all communication will come via and the checking of our website beavercreekdance.com UNIFORMS: Girls will be measured for their uniforms during the summer.
NEWSPAPER ARTICLES/PH0TOS/WEBSITE Throughout the year, we often send pictures of the team into the local paper. Names of the girls are provided with the article. Pictures and information will also be posted on our website. SPIRIT WEAR We will be ordering Creek Shirts to support the dance team at competitions! We will also order car decals as well. This is an optional purchase. Orders will be taken during the summer so that shirts can be distributed before fall and winter performances! TEAM PICTURES We have our team/individual pictures -as soon as our uniforms are in. A picture date and order forms will go out as soon as we are ready to go! Many parents order buttons to put on their shirts for competitions. A LITTE INFO ABOUT THE COSTS We do try to keep costs down as much as possible. However, this is a 10 month sport. There are a lot of practices, performances and activities that your daughter will be involved in with the Juniorettes Dance Team.
