1 :00 Randleman Middle School October 31, 2016 Volume 1 Issue 10 Melanie Richey recently transferred to RMS from Ramseur Elementary School, where she served as Assistant Principal for two years. Currently in her ninth year in education, Mrs. Richey began her career teaching math at North Asheboro Middle. With the encouragement of a former principal, she then completed a year-long administrative internship at Lindley Elementary in Guilford County. "She knew how much I loved helping my colleagues," Mrs. Richey said. "I saw it as an opportunity to impact student growth through supporting teachers." Mrs. Richey has her Master's degree in School Administration from UNCG and is also a NC Principal Fellow. For the past four summers, she has welcomed the opportunity to work with a team of educators from UNCG, providing professional development training to middle and high school math teachers across the state. Mrs. Richey, who is originally from West Palm Beach, Florida, earned a Bachelor's degree in marketing from Clemson University (a Tiger once again). She then attended Kennesaw State University (GA) and secured her teaching certifications in math and language arts. However, she then happily took a 13-year hiatus as a stay-at-home-mom! She has three children. Her oldest, Chip, is also a graduate of Clemson. He recently married his high school sweetheart in May, and they live in Raleigh. Her other son, Denton, is a junior at Clemson, and her daughter, Sadie, is a freshman at Clemson. Mrs. Richey s husband is also a proud graduate of Clemson! Mrs. Richey is very involved with Young Life in Randolph County. Her faith, family and friends are priorities in her life. She also enjoys reading, watching movies, visiting the beach and spending time with her two-year-old godson. Mrs. Richey's favorite quotes come from scripture, one which is, "For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations." She also has a variety of favorite educational quotes and will regularly change the quote at the bottom of her s. Check it often! 2 Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Cranford Everything happens for a reason. This adage was often echoed between Morgan Cranford and her mother while the former was growing up. It helped to put things into perspective and gave me hope that everything happens for a reason, Mrs. Cranford recalls. When she was in ninth grade, one of Mrs. Cranford s teachers, Mrs. Johns, expressed to her that she would be a good teacher because of her great ideas and creativity. Though becoming a teacher had never crossed her mind, she began taking early childhood classes and became a Teacher Cadet and a member of Future Teachers of America. Her high school experiences and her love for middle school students prompted her to become a teacher! Mrs. Cranford attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville, earning her teaching license with a major in History and a minor in Language Arts. One week after graduation in 2008, she was teaching seventh-grade language arts at Archdale-Trinity Middle School. A year and a half later, she accepted a position at East Montgomery Middle, teaching eighth-grade language arts and social studies. Mrs. Cranford decided to take a year off following the birth of her first child. However, she decided to substitute teach during the hiatus, subbing in Randolph County. She substituted mainly at Randleman Middle and grew fond of the school. When she returned to teaching in 2011, Mrs. Cranford, who is the Student Government Association sponsor and also added her AIG certificate from Western Carolina University, accepted a position at RMS. Everything happens for a reason! Mrs. Cranford grew up in Vermont and moved to North Carolina when she was in the seventh grade. She has been married for nine years to her husband, Matthew, and they have two beautiful little girls, Kendall (6) and Aubree (almost 4 months). The Cranford clan includes two cats, Athena and Jasmine, and two dogs, Tucker and Mira. In her free time, she enjoys reading and watching movies. 3 Tiger Athletics The Tigers season came to a disappointing end, as they dropped a decision to Southeastern Randolph in Super Tuesday s football action. Things looked bright for the Tigers early on, as they began the game with a long, sustained march that lasted the entire first quarter. Na'heim Lilly finally capped the drive with a touchdown run in the opening minute of the second quarter, giving the Tigers a 6-0 lead. It was all downhill thereafter, as the Wildcats scored 34 unanswered points. Nate Cassidy scored a TD and added the two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter for the Tigers, who finished the season with a 5-3 record. Hannah Hinshaw drove in four runs, and Natalie Beeson singled, tripled, scored a run and knocked in three more runs, leading the Tigers to a 14-5 win against NERMS in Monday's softball action. McKenzie Green recorded two singles, a walk, three runs and an RBI, while Sarah Rice had three walks, a single and scored three runs, and Bethany Dobias added a pair of walks, a single and two runs for the Tigers, who coaxed 13 walks as a team. Aaliyah Ratcliffe and Mackenzie Roach each had a single and a run, Savannah Scott had three walks and two runs, and Jozelyn Pecorella had a walk and two runs for the Tigers (9-4). The Tigers grabbed an early lead, but the Timberwolves rallied to win, 15-3, against Uwharrie on Wednesday. Sarah Rice, Bethany Dobias and McKenzie Green each singled to start the top of the first inning. Natalie Beeson drove in a run with a single, and Hannah Hinshaw followed with a two-run double for the Tigers (9-5). With the exception of Hinshaw's and Beeson's singles in the fourth inning and a base hit by Sophie Macon in the fifth, the Tigers' bats were silenced for the remainder of the game. The Tigers capped a great season with a 19-4 win against Southwestern Randolph in Super Saturday softball action. Emily Roach recorded three RBI, a triple, a walk and a run, and Jozelyn Pecorella added two RBI, a double, a walk and two runs for the Tigers, who finished off the Cougars with a 12-run onslaught in the third inning. Sophie Macon had two singles, a walk, two runs and an RBI; Bethany Dobias had a single, three walks and three runs; Hannah Hinshaw had a single, a walk, three runs and two RBI; McKenzie Green had two walks, two runs and an RBI; Natalie Beeson had two runs and an RBI; Gracyn Hall had a single, two walks, a run and an RBI; and Jesselyn Perez had a single, two walks, three runs and an RBI. The Tigers finished third on the season with a 10-5 record.
