24-Week Practice Rules, Practice Defined, and Summer Rules
What is a practice?
What Constitutes a practice? Any activity organized and/or directed by any member of the coaching staff in which either (a) appropriate equipment is used or (b) instruction or evaluation of the athlete takes place Film sessions involving a coach and one or more student-athletes Walkthrough drills, regardless of the use of equipment Individual skills workouts involving a member of the coaching staff Open gyms that are closed to the public and attended by a member of the coaching staff Sport specific activity classes only available to invited students
Other examples- practice Strength and Conditioning Ruling: Conditioning and weight-training activities that do not utilize equipment associated with a sport will not be considered practice in that sport. Alumni Games Season of Competition Ruling: An alumni contest is considered to be an in-house event and shall be treated the same as an internal practice, but would not constitute a SOC.
Example 1 I am the volleyball coach and part of my employment responsibilities is being a facility supervisor for the gymnasium. Since my job requires that I be present while any activity is happening, does a voluntary open gym that our players are participating in become an official practice?
Example 1-answer If you have a legitimate purpose as gym supervisor to be there and limit your involvement to that role, then it would not be considered a practice. You should only be present on the court as much as is absolutely necessary, and you should avoid watching (i.e. evaluating) the open gym as much as possible. During the open gym need to act strictly in the role of gym supervisor, and not in your role as coach? If it s not required of you as supervisor to be on the court and you sit in the bleachers watching (rather than going to your office or doing other work in the facility), you have now gone outside your role of supervisor and crossed over into your role as coach. It would now become one of your 24 weeks.
Example 2 As a coach, I m in charge of the gym schedule. I made arrangements for the gym to be open from 7:00-9:00am for my players and communicated to them that they are free to use the gym for pick-up games. I will not be present during that time. Does this count as organizing and therefore count as an official practice?
Example 2- answer Yes. As a member of the coaching staff, you organized an event in which sport-specific equipment will be used. This is not considered an open gym that you organized as part of your larger institutional responsibilities, as it is not open to anyone besides the basketball team. This would be considered a practice. If you had arranged for an open gym to take place at that time and it was available and advertised to the entire student body, it would not be considered a practice.
Example 3 Our competition swimming pool is located in the general student recreation center and used by everyone on campus. I m a swim coach and also work as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the pool. Whenever someone is in the pool, regardless of skill level, a staff member has to be in the chair guarding the pool. If I am on lifeguard duty and our swimmers are doing workouts on their own, does this now become a practice because I am there?
Example 3-answer No, as long as you do not direct or instruct the activity in any way. Part of your job description requires you to be poolside at this time. The circumstances that require you to be in attendance are safety related and would cause you to act in an observatory manner with any group of individuals in the facility.
Example 4 Our team has worked really hard this preseason and we are going to give them the week of Thanksgiving off from activity. We will only do a couple of video sessions to look at technique from the fall. Since we are not going to do any athletic activity like a normal practice, do we have to count this week in our 24-week season?
Example 4- answer Yes, this week would count towards your 24-week season., video review is a form of evaluation of athletes and therefore must be counted in your 24- week season.
Tryouts and how they fit in
Location of tryouts and who can participate Tryouts Location: An institution s campus shall be defined as institutional property or the practice/playing area where an institution conducts its regular season practices and/or contests. Who can participate: Tryouts of prospective students, in accordance with NAIA Bylaws, shall not constitute practice, although institutional team members may be involved. Tryouts must comply with institutional policy. So for our institution we must have a physical on file and complete the KU athletic tryout form (see next slide)
Campus visitations and tryouts of prospective students The NAIA s attitude toward campus visitation of prospective students is formulated from the following three major principles: The protection of the student in maintaining normal academic progress in high school and junior college. The coordination of this rule with the overall policies of the institution affecting procurement of students with special talents. The control of tryouts consistent with making the intercollegiate program an integral part of the total program without legislating against the student. a. Individual or group tryouts may be conducted, on the member institution s campus only, for the purpose of assisting in the assessment of athletics promise. Tryouts shall be limited to no more than two days for a specific student at a member institution.

Summer participation, practice, etc.
Summer participation for nonidentified students Case: An institution s baseball team will tour Japan over the summer and will compete against teams from that country during the tour. May recently graduated high school students, who will enter the institution this fall, play on the team during the tour? Approved Ruling: No. Since the institution is being represented, all participating students must have been identified with the institution during the spring term. Allowing students who are not yet identified with the institution to participate in such a tour would also violate NAIA tryout regulations.
Summer participation for entering transfers and entering freshman Approved Ruling: Prospective students (entering freshman and transfers) are allowed to engage in informal conditioning activities with continuing student-athletes. Prospective students are not permitted to practice or compete with an institution s team prior to the beginning of the 24-week season unless the student is enrolled full-time in summer coursework at the NAIA institution, or enrolled in 12 institutional credit hours for the fall term at the NAIA institution. Remember that a student does not identify with our institution in the summer, and they are not bound to us until identified when fall classes start or participate in an exhibition or game b. No part of the travel expense, meals, and lodging of prospective students making visitations to an institution shall be paid by the institution unless such practice is a part of the general institutional policy in procurement of other students with special talents and not only for the express purpose of securing athletes-we have this rule in place, so it is allowed if approved by Director of Athletics c. Visitation of prospective students shall not involve loss of school time, except where such visitation occurs as a part of the total visitation program of the institution, approved by the administration of both the host institution and the institution of the visiting prospective student.
24 week practice season
Key points when establishing the 24- week season A week is defined as Monday (12:00a.m.) through Sunday (11:59 p.m.) The NAIA does not impose mandatory start dates or dead periods The 24-week season applies on a sport basis. Each team within that sport has the same 24-week season A single practice or competition, involving as few as one team member, will constitute on the permitted 24 weeks A sport can have no more than three break period during the 24-week season A Sr. who has terminated eligibility still falls under the 24 week guideline until the academic year ends
Example of breaks: Each sport is allowed twenty-four weeks between August 1st and May 15th of each academic year to conduct practice and competition. Every team is allowed three break periods in that 24-week season, which does include scheduled institutional break periods if no practice or competition is conducted. Below is an example of a 24- week season with three break periods. Example of a 24-week season with three break periods Sept 1, 2015 Nov 20, 2015 = 12 weeks Break #1 Nov 30, 2015 Dec 18, 2015 = 3 weeks Break #2 Feb 1, 2016 March 11, 2016 = 6 weeks Break #3 March 28, 2016 April 16, 2016 = 3 weeks
Key Points regarding breaks No team is required to use all three break periods in their 24-week season A break is any week (Monday-Sunday) or series of weeks in which no practice or competition occurs Breaks do not apply to practice activities between May 16-July 31 One practice (as a team or with and individual) in a week counts as one full week
Summer vs. Academic Year Academic year August 1 st through May 15th Any practices and competitions during this time must count towards the sport s 24-week season Coaches may conduct team practices and competitions with continuing students during the summer Continuing students are not required to be enrolled during the summer to compete or practice with the team
Practice during Postseason Practice activities taking place after the deadline for the sport s completion of conference tournament or National Tournament seeding/selection (example old format for women s soccer) and the team s participation in its final contest in NAIA-approved postseason shall not count towards the team s 24-week season. Teams who are not selected to NAIA-approved postseason must count any practice activities during the postseason towards their 24-week season. Prior to the start of NAIA postseason play, teams must count practice taking place prior to the start of NAIA-approved postseason competition as a week in their 24-week season. Example: NAIA University women s basketball team makes it to their conference championship tournament. The conference tournament doesn t begin until Tuesday and the team practices on Monday once they arrive at the tournament location. The team must count Monday s practice in their 24-week season because the NAIA postseason tournament has not yet begun in this case.
Key points regarding postseason practice Practice and competition during NAIA-approved postseason will not count towards a team s 24-week season Competitions in NAIA-approved postseason will not count in a team s frequency of play limits A team who is eliminated from NAIA postseason, must count any practice activities thereafter in their 24-week season

Example 1 Our coaching staff is going to be out of town at our annual coaches convention for a week prior to the start of the winter break. We planned out our weeks early in the fall, and decided that this week would be an off week and the start of one of our three break periods. Upon learning that we were going to be gone and no practice conducted, the captains approached the coaching staff and asked if they could run practice in our absence. Would we have to count this week as one of our 24 weeks?
Example 1-answer No, you would not have to count this week. The bylaw reads that an activity will count as a practice if it is organized or directed by an identified member of the coaching staff. In this case, the activity wasn t organized or directed by anyone on the coaching staff and would not count towards practice limits.
Example 2 Next week the entire coaching staff will be out of town and the captains will be conducting activity, so can we give practice instructions to our captains so they are working on the things we want them to be working on?
Example 2-answer Yes, but if you do, it will meet the definition of a practice and count towards your 24 weeks. By providing the drills or practice instructions that you want followed, you are directing what happens during the practice. Even though you re not physically present for the practice, if you organize or direct the event it will be considered a practice.
Example 3 We have a women s soccer student athlete who was in her 4th SOC in Our women s soccer season ended on December 12th, and the team has 1 week remaining in their 24 week practice schedule. This student athlete is going to try out for a professional league and would like our coaching staff to help her prepare. After the final week ends would she be subject to the 24 week rule since her eligibility has been terminated due to her completing her 4th SOC, and women s soccer has completed all of their allowable games this season?
Example 3-answer Yes, student must stay within the 24 week season, even after the women s soccer season has ended. She is still held to the eligibility standards through the remaining academic year and since she is working out with coaches, she must stay within the 24 weeks.
Example 4 Same example as before, but since the student athlete is no longer eligible she is going to join the staff as a volunteer coach to help recruit and design plays. Does this make a difference?
Example 4-answer Having been certified and competed as a student-athlete this term, in order for the student to work out with the coaching staff, she will first be held to the 24 week eligibility standard and considered a student-athlete through May 15. She may make the transition to a volunteer coach in other duties (plays, recruiting) but for purposes of running practice and any activity of working out with the team, she will be considered a student until May 15.
