2 GENERAL INFORMATION Lobby Ø Please do not arrive earlier than 1 hour prior to morning start-times as the building only opens at that time. Ø No practicing in the corridors. Competitors Ø Please ensure dancers register and pick up their Lanyards at the Registration in the lobby. Ø Lanyards will allow access to the Auditorium (except the Balcony) only if seats are available. Studio Packages Ø Are available and collected by Teachers at the main MJFD office located behind the concession. Adjudication Sheet Pickup Ø Adjudication sheets will only be distributed to the studio representatives at the end of the competition. Otherwise sheets will be mailed out following the competition. If a person other than the studio owner/director will be picking up the sheets please send a letter or note authorizing them to do so. Auditorium Ø Due to FIRE REGULATIONS- all spectators in the auditorium must occupy a seat. Sitting in the aisles or front of the auditorium is not permitted. Ø NO FOOD OR DRINKS ARE PERMITTED AT ANY TIME. Ø Adjudicators are recording their comments and unnecessary noise can be distracting to adjudicators as well as performers. Please ask your students not to whistle, yell or scream during performances. Ø Competing dancers, their teachers, and parents are asked to demonstrate good sportsmanship and general support of all participants. We are here to have a fun and educational experience! 3 Video/Photography Ø No recording devices of any kind will be permitted in the theatre. A professional photographer/videographer will be on site. Please see their table in the Lobby for purchasing. Ø The MJFD reserves the right to record EVENTS and these recordings may be released for public viewing. Stage Dimensions and Surface Ø Participants are not permitted to use anything that will alter the condition of the stage for the next participants (e.g. liquids, gel, aerosol, glitter, flour, paper, hairspray, fog, smoke, oil, paint etc.). If this occurs, participants may be disqualified. Rosin may be used in the Ballet section. Ø STAGE DIMENSIONS: 32 feet left to right x 26 feet front to back Lost or Stolen Property, Damaged Property and/or Injuries Ø Please DO NOT leave your valuables unattended anywhere. Ø Please report any lost or stolen goods to the Main MJFD office. Ø The MJFD or the host facility are not responsible or liable for any damages, stolen/ lost items, or personal injuries which may be sustained while participating in any activity connected this competition no matter how caused, to either contestant or participants. Concerns and Complaints and Disqualifications Ø Any complaints with respect to a dance number must be submitted to the Compliance Officer or the Office Team Leader within 60 minutes of the posting of the marks for that category. Ø Any complaints made in an improper manner OR anyone approaching the adjudicator MAY face disqualification at the discretion of the Compliance Officer. Ø The Compliance Officer reserves the right to disqualify any competitor infringing on the rules and any person who behaves in an inappropriate manner. We are always interested in improving and receiving feedback. Please sign all letters so that we have the opportunity to respond to your concerns. 4 REGISTRATION INFORMATION THE DECISION OF THE MOOSE JAW FESTIVAL OF DANCE IN ALL MATTERS ARISING OUT OF AND NOT PROVIDED FOR IN THESE POLICIES AND GUIDELINES SHALL BE FINAL Registration Ø Age of participant is determined by age as of December 31 st, Ø Registration will be open between DECEMBER 15, 2017 and JANUARY 15, 2018 via the Dance Comp Genie link at Ø Late Entries will not be accepted after the deadline. Ø Entries are received on a first come, first serve basis with priority given to studios with group entries. Please enter early to avoid disappointment. Ø A total of 950 entries will be accepted in 2018 and entries will close once capacity has been reached. Ø For every group entry, each studio is allowed to enter 5 solo/duo/trios (combined). Independent entries will not be accepted. Please see your studio for entry forms. Ø Competitors may not compete against themselves. Ø All entries must be given a dance title and include names of participants in that dance. In fairness to all, dance titles that include any part of the dance studios name or play on the studios name are not accepted. Fees SOLOS DUOS/TRIOS GROUPS (Small 4-9) (Large 10+)(OPEN 4+) $35.00 PER DANCER $25.00 PER DANCER $20.00 PER DANCER Age Categories Ø Age category for GROUPS is determined by calculating the average age of the dancer(s) to the nearest year. Ø Duo s/trios age is determined by the age of the oldest participant. 5 Classes The class refers to the number of dancers solo, duo/trio, small group, large group, or open group. Classes include the following: Solo Duo/Trio (2 to 3 dancers) Small Group (4 to 9 dancers) Small Group Open (4 to 9 dancers) Large Group (10 or more dancers) Large Group Open (10 or more dancers) Payment Please note CHEQUES & MONEY ORDERS TO BE MADE TO: MOOSE JAW FESTIVAL OF DANCE Payments must be postmarked by February 1, No Cash payments will be accepted for entries.] Refund Policy There are no refunds for cancellation of entries MJFD SYLLABUS FINAL AMENDED COPY OCTOBER 2017 GENERAL INFORMATION & REGULATIONS 5

6 COMPETITION INFORMATION Changes and Corrections Before the Festival Ø Competition Schedules will be ed to studios by JANUARY 31, Changes and corrections, which are not on the error of the Association, must be submitted in writing by FEBRUARY 15, Studios teachers/owners are asked to carefully review this summary to ensure your dancers/groups are in the correct age category, discipline and that spelling is correct. Ø After FEBRUARY 15, 2018, any changes or corrections will be permitted BUT will not be in the Program Book and will be announced only. Changes and Cancellations During the Festival Ø Must be submitted to the BACKSTAGE MANAGER immediately so music and marking sheets can be changed. Notifications of Missing Dancers and Substitutions Ø Substitutions and missing dancers in groups are permitted but must not affect the age or group class of the original entry or they MAY be moved to appropriate category at discretion of the Compliance Officer. Ø When submitting changes for groups please include the entry number, age class and the dancer s names that are affected by the change. Ø If you wish to have the adjudicator notified that a dancer is missing you must notify the Backstage Manager prior to the start of the session. Ø Missing dancers that affect the group's size category (large to small, small to trio, trio to duo) will dance in the original category as entered but may be required to dance for adjudication only. The MJFD may take extenuating circumstances into consideration in order for a mark to be received. Re-Dances Ø If a competitor 10 years or younger runs off the stage before the performance is completed, they may re-dance with no penalties. Ø Competitor s 11 years and older may also re-dance if they run off stage BUT will receive a 5- point deduction. Ø Re-dances for technical difficulties will not be penalized. 7 Props & Costumes Ø Props are NOT permitted in the Classical Ballet category with exception of Nursery Rhymes. Ø Anything handheld, that is not a part of the costume is considered a prop. Ø Set examination dances are not permitted. Ø Costuming is optional. Ø Oral explanations of a dance are not permitted. Ø Please be considerate of other dancers, teachers and studios and mindful of the limited space in the backstage area. Props cannot be stored backstage, or interfere with any other performances. Ø Simple props and scenery limited in size and weight are welcome in most categories, provided that they can be put on and taken off stage within a reasonable amount of time. Adjudicators have the discretion to deduct marks if timeframe is too long. Ø Elaborate props are welcome in the Production Category, where a reasonable set-up and tear down time may be used, provided that MJFD is informed of both times before the festival starts for programming purposes. Scoring for the Dance Inspirations Event: Ø Dance Inspirations participants will be adjudicated and receive a score out of 100% based on the following criteria: ü 60% Technique - Execution of dance steps at appropriate skill level with proper posture and control ü 30% Stage Presence, Artistry and Musicality - Good projection and visual appeal, flow of movement with music and appropriate timing ü 10% Overall Impression - Quality of performance Ø Using this formula, Adjudicators will give a percentage mark and all participants in each routine will be presented with an award for their achievement. 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd placements will be announced in all categories. Ø Within a category, no ties are permitted for highest mark (first place), however, ties in second and third places may result. Scoring for Dance Challenge Event: Ø Marking criteria will remain the same. Ø Each performance will be marked by all three (3) adjudicators. Ø The final mark will be the average of the three scores. 8 Achievement System 96% and above Diamond Plus 90 to 95.99% Diamond 85 to 89.99% Ruby 80 to 84.99% Sapphire 70 to 79.99% Emerald Scoring for Dance Challenge Event: Ø Marking criteria will remain the same. Ø Each performance will be marked by all three (3) adjudicators. Ø The final mark will be the average of the three scores. Ø In the event of a tie, original marks from Dance Inspirations will be referenced. Mark Infractions and Disqualifications Ø There will be a 5-point deduction from the original mark for each 30 second overtime infraction. Ø Re-dances for ages 11 years and older will receive a 5-point deduction. Ø There MAY be a 5-point deduction or disqualification at the sole discretion of the adjudicators for the following: inappropriate language in songs, suitability of the music, gestures in routines or costuming. Ø Props requiring lengthy setup time and excessive lead-ins may result in a 5-point timing infraction at the sole discretion of the adjudicators. Scholarships Ø Some solo scholarships require group participation or multiple solos for eligibility of the award. Ø The scholarship list will be printed in the Dance Inspirations program book. Awards and scholarships will be presented at an award s ceremony at end of competition (time TBA). The final scholarship winners list will be posted on the Moose Jaw Festival of Dance website within 7 days of the end of the competition. Ø Scholarships are intended for furthering dance education. Ø For the Dance Challenge- Scholarships will be awarded to the top three scores in the Junior and Senior divisions, as well as an Honorable Mention Scholarship will be awarded to the highest score to a group not having placed in the top three. 9 Adjudications Ø Each category will have a separate adjudicator who specializes in that form of dance to give the dancers optimum critiquing benefits. Ø Each entry will receive written and video adjudications along with their percentage mark (unless entry is for adjudication only). Ø Video adjudications will be available for download within 24 to 48 hours after the session. A password protected online link will be ed to studios. Written adjudication sheets will be available at the end of the competition. Ø Participants are asked to attend the competitor interaction time and award s presentation held at the end of each session. Time Limits Timing is critical and time limits for routines are strictly enforced by timers. Routines are timed from the time the first choreographed movement begins until participants leave the stage. Maximum time limits for routines are as follows: Solos (all ages) - 2 1/2 minutes Duos/Trios (all ages) - 3 minutes Small Groups - 5 minutes Large/Open Groups - 7 minutes Productions 8 to 15 minutes Music We are no longer accepting CD S and will now be going with a standard uploading of music. Should a Studio choose NOT to upload their music, it will their own responsibility to play their music at the sound booth from a device (ex. IPAD/IPOD). Individual Studios will be responsible to have back-up music available with them backstage. Music can be uploaded as early as when you first register, or come back and do it later, but it must be completed by April 1, Please note our system will only accept MP3s. 10 INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Please ensure you use the ENTRY # to label music. 2. Log onto your account with us at: 3. Go to your "Dashboard" 4. Select "Upload Music" 5. Select "Choose File" next to the appropriate routine or dancer name and upload your MP3. 6. If you have uploaded the wrong music, or wish to change it, simply click on the "Upload Music" link again and select the different song. 7. It is helpful if when saving your file, you can put in the notes/comments section of the file whether the dancer(s) start on or off stage. If not, please inform our music team before each session, or at the beginning of the day for all the day s entries. Backstage Information Only dancers, teachers and authorized personnel/volunteers are allowed backstage. All non-competitors must be wearing a lanyard authorizing them to be backstage. Backstage Manager Ø Solo, duo/trio Competitors must report to the Backstage Manager one half hour before their sessions. Teachers, must advise the Backstage Manager of cancellations before the start of that session. It is not the Backstage Manager's job to find competitors. Please advise Backstage Manager if props are being used. Ø Groups must report to the Line-up Coordinator downstairs and gather in TV (choral) room when their entry number is displayed on the white board. It is not the Line-up Coordinator's job to find groups. Groups will be sent to backstage from the TV room. Dancer Supervision Ø Groups 14 and under must have either an adult, or a capable student supervisor, who is responsible for their conduct in the school building, auditorium, backstage and having the group prepared when called. Groups cannot be in the wing area until they are called. Ø Solo and duo/trio competitors under age of 10 must be chaperoned backstage by an adult or senior student. 11 Practicing Practicing is not permitted on stage or behind the backstage curtains at any time. Tap Shoes Tap shoes are allowed in Tap, Broadway, and Variety Classes. Due to Schoolboard Regulation s we ask that tap shoes be worn on stage only. Please carry tap shoes or keep taps covered at all other times. 12 DANCE CATEGORIES ACRODANCE This category is for a dance routine that demonstrates controlled movements and acrobatic tricks along with dance. The majority of the routine must consist of acrobatic moves and tricks. BROADWAY This category is for a performance that includes singing & dancing, vocalizing, miming, mouthing of words, lip synching, dramatization, stage, etc. CLASSICAL BALLET This category is for a dance that uses any recognized classical technique and is interpretive of the music. Classical Ballet will have two categories, soft slipper and pointe. 50% or more of the Pointe routine must be performed on pointe. A minimum age of 11 years old is required for dancers to compete in the Pointe Classical Ballet category. A Repertoire Ballet must compete in Character Ballet. CLASSICAL BALLET NURSERY RHYME This category is for a dance that portrays a character from a Nursery Rhyme. No vocals on music. The Nursery Rhyme category is only for dancers who are 5 years old. CHARACTER Character is a dance utilizing a majority of ballet technique to portray a character while the whole body becomes the character. Anyone wishing to enter ethnic-national dances must enter in this category. DEMI-CHARACTER Demi-Character is a dance that portrays a character or tells a story and develops the character through dance in the classical form. Dancers must use classical technique from the waist down, and portray the character with upper body only. HIP HOP This category is for a dance that consists of hip-hop and street dance technique. JAZZ This category is for a dance technique based on isolation of the body and/or contraction/releases. A maximum of 3 acrobatic moves allowed in this category. 13 LYRICAL JAZZ This category is for a dance that incorporates a sense of balance and control with smooth flowing lines derived from jazz technique, to express emotion. A minimum age of 11 years old is required for dancers to compete in the Lyrical Jazz category. CONTEMPORARY This category is for a dance that draws on modern dance techniques as well as newer philosophies of movement that depart from classical dance techniques. Contemporary dance can be a collaboration of many styles of dance and performers express movement through the whole body. A contemporary dancer integrates the mind, body and spirit with the music and the movements. A minimum age of 11 years is required for dancers to compete in the Contemporary category. TAP This category is for a dance that produces varying rhythmic patterns. Emphasis in this category is on tap technique and not character, jazz and acrobatics. No pre-recorded tap sound is permitted. Jingle taps are not permitted. VARIETY This category is for a performance where the content is not covered by the other categories. Anyone wishing to enter a performance that includes baton should enter in this category. PRODUCTIONS This category for groups only is completely open and may include any dance form, acrobatics or baton, and dancers of any age. ANYTHING GOES!
