1 You are invited to the 2018 OnStage Dance Festival April 19 22, 2018 About Us The OnStage Dance Festival is an annual event that takes place in Humboldt and was created to allow dancers to come together within the regional dance community. There are many benefits to being a part of this festival competition in a positive way, professional adjudicators to assist you in improving in the art of dance, the opportunity to perform for family and friends, and friendships and memories that will last for years to come. The OnStage Dance Festival proves to be motivational and inspirational to all its participants, instructors and choreographers. The festival has attributed its success over the years to the freshness in ideas that often transpire through the continuous feedback. The OnStage dance organization has seen evolution in this event from the elegance of ballet to the new age style of ACRO. The organization is an open minded body that encourages the input from the general community. The OnStage Dance Festival is a registered organization and is managed by a board of directors. The Board would like to thank all of the participants for their dedication in keeping dance alive and sharing their art with the public audience. Mandate The OnStage Dance Festival inc provides an opportunity for recreational, non-competitive schools of dance to attend a competition that provides a cultural and educational performance showcase that will enhance the participant s selfconfidence and further develop their dance skills. Terms of Participation 1. Undesirable conduct demonstrated by dance participants, Artistic Directors (instructors), parents, viewers or volunteers would mean expulsion for the duration of the festival regardless of status. 2. Registration adhering to time frames, reviewing tech package, register with completed forms and reviewing drafts of schedule 3. Definition of Non-competitive schools: 1hr/discipline (instruction) per week per discipline not including exam work -- no auditions Registration 1. Fill out the registration form found in this package or on the website at onstage.rockstardancemanager.com. Please note: There is a fillable form on our website, but still requires a hard copy for mail in purposes. If there are any problems with the fillable form, please contact Joanne Berger. 2. One entry form is required to be filled out per dance and one summary sheet per studio. The summary sheet requires the date of birth along with correct spelling of names. 3. Cheques are to be made payable to the OnStage Dance Festival Inc. and must be mailed along with the entry forms and summary sheet. 4. All entries must be postmarked no later than December 31, Remember our spots fill up fast and we work on a first come-first serve basis. So don t be disappointed register early. 5. There will be a notification of acceptance in the competition. Once this acceptance has been given there are no refunds. 6. No changes will be made to the schedule once final draft has gone out. 7. 2 Judges The OnStage Dance Festival committee will contract up to 3 adjudicators. Watch our website for selection of adjudicators. Group Categories, Size and Time Age Categories Group Category Number of Dancers Time (Stage entry to Departure) Solo One 2.5 minutes Duet Two 2.5 minutes Trio Three 2.5 minutes Small Group Four Eight 3 minutes Large Group Nine or more 4.5 minutes Production 15 minutes Age is determined as of December 31, 2017 To determine the age category for duets and trios the age of the older dancer is used. To determine the age category of a group the average ages of the competitors is used. Calculate the age using one decimal and rounding to the closest whole number. (Ex dances in the 5 6 category whereas 6.50 dances in the 7 8 age category). Should any competitor be the artistic director, an instructor or assistant instructor (who has completed high school), will be placed in the teacher category Each category will be split after 8 entries, unless there are special circumstances. Age divisions Categories ACRO Character Ballet Classical Ballet Classical Pointe Contemporary Demi-Character Hip Hop Jazz Lyrical Modern Street Style Street Jazz/Pop Breakdancing Popping/Locking/Gliding Stepping Musical Theatre Production Song & Dance Street Tap Other and over Teacher Style of dance that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. A dance portraying a character, utilizing classical technique. Soft slippers or Pointe shoes may be used. Props may be used. Ethnic dances can be entered in this category. A dance using classical technique to classical music. Done in either soft slipper or point shoes. No props. Dance incorporating classical ballet technique using Pointe shoes A dance that explores the total movement potential of the body. It differs from commercial or competitive dance and is not bound by set standards, as well as defined styles such as ballet or jazz dance. Instead, it seeks to express a personalized vision, individualized approaches to the moving body and choreographic possibilities. A dance using classical technique to semi-classical Character music. Style of dance that could include: Stomp Hip Hop Fusions Clown Video Style Old School Hip Hop Hip Hop Fusions Dance Hall Krumping Reggaeton Dance using jazz technique A dance portraying an idea or theme Dance resembles modern art and music in being experimental and iconoclastic. Inspires audiences to a new awareness of inner and outer realities. Any dance suitable for stage using lip sync A dance with 20 or more dancers using any combination of dance techniques. Not considered for the Golden Ticket. Any dance suitable for stage, using live voice A combination of Stylized Jazz (without specific technical moves) and Hip Hop Dance using various rhythmic patterns. Pre-recorded tap sounds may not be used. No Jingle taps are allowed. A routine that may incorporate anyone of or combination of styles already outlined or one that does not fit any of the categories already listed. 3 Awards & Scholarships Scholarships, trophies and workshops will be awarded at the end of the OnStage Dance Festival to the participating dancers of the festival. Awards are not transferable to other School of Dance dancers, sibling/friends or instructor. Please notify the Adjudication Coordinator within 2 weeks of the OnStage Dance Festival if the scholarship awarded will not be used. Adjudicator s will randomly award a Golden Ticket upon their own discretion at any given time with up to 8 large or small groups who will perform prior to the Awards. Five of the Golden Ticket awardees will be from the 13 and over age groups and three of the Golden Ticket awardees will be from the 12 and under age groups. There will also be 2 wild cards on hand. The Golden Ticket or Wildcard awardees must perform in a dance-off to receive the winning Golden Ticket. Dance off to receive the cash award. The Adjudicator s decision is final on all marks/awards during the festival. Staging Canadell Stage (see drawing on the OnStage Dance Festival website) To enter the main stage, doors are located backstage in the Jubilee A room. The stage dimensions (between the wings) are 32 x 24 with a walk way around outside of stage area. Music to be played by the Artistic Director, Instructor, or Assistant Instructor. The sound system is located Stage Left CD and IPOD type system will be available. If the instructor is not available, an OnStage representative will be backstage to help out. Note: The OnStage Dance representative will not be responsible for any errors that arise whether it be syncing or quality of the music when played by an OnStage representative. Please give notice that this help is required at the beginning of the session. Props can be brought in during the breaks thru the north-west side door of the Jubilee Hall. The dance floor will have 2 wing curtaining on each side and be marked center, center front and back, front left and right and back left and right. Please take note of the 3 double door Emergency Exits. General Any problems that arise while the Festival is in progress must be directed to an OnStage Dance Director All teachers, students, and parents are asked to assist in keeping the dressing room area clean. There is one general admissions doorway into the Theatre. No food or drink, except water, in the theatre or dressing rooms. Accommodations are available within Humboldt. Please visit our website for a complete list. The City of Humboldt will provide a canteen throughout the OnStage Dance Festival. Family, friends and instructors of the dancers performing can video tape their performances but we discourage extensive continuous taping of random performances. Please cover all red/green recording lights with masking tape. NO flash allowed on cameras. Turn off cell phones or have on vibrate mode. Security will be on hand to monitor the entrance of the theatre and monitor spectator conduct. Security will be on hand to monitor the change room entrances and make change room visitations throughout the OnStage Dance festival. Competitors should warm up in advance and be ready backstage 15 minutes prior to going through the backstage doors. Don t count on being paged or have runners looking for participants. A routine with a dancer(s) missing must report this info to backstage before the performance and it will be announced and the adjudication table will be informed. We ask all participants, instructors and volunteers of the OnStage Dance Festival to practice a professional attitude in all areas of the venue. The committee will review the lack of compliance. of Interest Snacks, refreshments and meals are available for all Artistic Directors/faculty and festival coordinators/committee members in the VIP room. Your ID bracelet is required for entry into the VIP room. Adjudication will be filmed by Jenkins Media. The dance studios directors designated will be ed with a DropBox link to view or download the adjudication online. The s will be sent on the last day of the OnStage Dance Festival.
