1 BOURNE GRAMMAR SCHOOL BULLETIN Week ending Friday 9 December 2016 From Jonathan Maddox, Headteacher ESAA CUP CROSS-COUNTRY NATIONAL FINAL I was very proud to watch our two teams compete in the National Final at Formby last Saturday. The event was impressive in scale and organisation, as might be expected for an event of such significance, and our students rose to the occasion. Properly kitted out in their bespoke outfits, the students looked the part and their presentation and sportsmanship were quite the equal of any other team, including those from some of the most prestigious schools in the land. I was impressed by the team spirit within each team and across both and particularly by Sophie Brittain (Year 10), who was unfortunately unable to compete herself but wished to be with the teams to support them as Team Manager. Both teams competed brilliantly but the boys demonstrated their true class by achieving an overall placing of sixth - our best-ever placing at this event. I join the students in expressing gratitude to Mr Ray, Miss Hempstead and Mr Sheppard for their expert training and guidance of the students throughout the rounds leading up to the Final, and for looking after and encouraging them at the event itself. A very proud day for sport at our School. "1

2 Report by Mr Sheppard and Miss Hempstead Waking up to a fresh, crisp morning after a day of travelling and a good meal the night before, we headed off to Range High School with our Junior Boys and Inter Girls teams. As we walked the sandy, undulating course, it was pleasing to see a National Final course that would suit our runners from the Fens. We were clearly the best dressed school there, with our rain jackets, trousers and hoodies thanks to our sponsors, Hewpack, as well as an anonymous sponsor. It was great to see the number of parents that had made the journey across to support the teams, as did Mr Maddox who gave his best wishes to both teams before the race. A special thank you must go to the Brill family, who made some excellent flapjack. You could sense, by the sheer energy of the Junior Boys during the warm-up, that they were ready to tackle the challenge set by Mr Ray; to better the School s all-time record of a 9th place team finish. It was clearly a possibility, after the team qualified from their Regional competition with the best score in the country. Sam Oakley (Year 8) had an excellent start and led the team home in 19th place. The team s greatest strength was their depth of quality; Harry Hewitt (Year 7) finished in the excellent position of 27th, with Connor Ely and Max James (both Year 8) being extremely close behind, finishing in 40th and 42nd respectively. The teams were focused and knew that a fast start to the race would be essential to secure them the places that they could achieve. The Inter Girls started out first, with Elin James (Year 9) leading the team home in 41st position, closely followed by Hana Ray (Year 10) in 62nd, with Cora Downing (Year 9) and Shannon Woodfine (Year 10) being our third and fourth runners home. Megan Stuart (Year 10) and Hattie Knox (Year 9) completed the team, managed by the key motivational skills of Sophie Brittain. In the end, the team, rounded off by Alex Galpin and Joe Garner (both Year 7), secured a stunning place of 6th, a bestever finish for Bourne Grammar School. In fact, the top positions were decided by the narrowest of margins, with the Junior Boys being just 7 points off the podium and a mere 15 points off taking the title. "2

3 CHRISTMAS LUNCH FOR STUDENTS Christmas lunch (roast turkey, stuffing balls, pigs-in-blankets, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, peas, carrots, Brussels sprouts and gravy, followed by either Christmas pudding and custard or Eton mess) will be served in the Chill at lunchtime on Wednesday 14 December. The cost of the lunch is just 2.22 and includes a free cracker. There is no need to book in advance and lunch can be purchased using cash or Squid card. FORTHCOMING EVENTS Tickets are still available for the Christmas Concert, which will include traditional and contemporary Christmas music performed by students in School ensembles. Tickets, priced at 6 for adults and 4 for concessions, include a drink and mince pie during the interval and can be purchased via the School website or ARTWORK On Saturday 13 November, a group of A-Level Art students met up with Miss Ellis and Mrs Somerville in Lincoln to visit the Usher Gallery. Bea Elliot (Year 12) wrote the following: On Saturday, we had the opportunity to visit the BP Portrait Award 2016 at the Lincoln Usher Gallery. We made our way around the exhibition, which consisted of the very best portrait paintings by artists from over 80 countries around the world. I especially found this a helpful experience as I intend to use people as my subject matter. As part of our theme, Surfaces, I am looking at the different textures of human skin, so looking at the techniques used to create different surfaces of the body was very useful for my project. To finish the day we visited the Euan Uglow and Sargy Manh exhibition. They focused on different forms and use a much more abstract style. We were even allowed to try drawing a live model in the gallery before going home. "3

5 INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS Rugby Adam Castle (Year 13) has secured a place in the Nottingham Rugby Academy. He has been training hard over the summer with the team and is enjoying the exceptional coaching and standard of rugby. Adam has played three games so far this season with great results, winning all three games. Adam has just finished representing the county for the U18 NLD squad, but he had to miss two important grading games for the Midlands trials due to concussion. However, as he represented them last year, being only 17, and after scoring well in the first grading game, he has been selected to represent the Midlands Development Squad in January. He will hopefully get the opportunity to represent them in the U18 England Counties trial matches. Adam is also playing for his club, Spalding RFC 1st XV in the Midlands 2 League and for Spalding Colts. Trampolining Eleanor Waldock (Year 10), Grace Fidler (Year 8), Isabelle Gray (Year 7) and Madeline Waldock (Year 7) represented Bourne Grammar School last weekend at the East Midlands Regional Schools Trampolining Championships. Grace, Isabelle and Madeline all put in excellent performances in a field of 119 competitors in the U14 Novice category. Their combined scores results in the BGS team finishing in a very respectable 9th place out of 25 schools. Individually, Madeline finished in 3rd place, which means she will move forward to the Zonal competition (Central England and Wales), taking place in February, to compete for a place in the National Finals. Eleanor competed in the U19 Novice category and, against a field of 57 competitors, finished in 2nd place. She will also go to the Zonal Competition in February to try and gain a place at the National Finals. Gymnastics Georgina Harrison (Year 8) competed in the Level 6 Lincolnshire County Gymnastics Championships last weekend and achieved Bronze for Vault (all ages), Gold overall for all apparatus (age ) and also passed her Level 6 Grade.
