1 ProviDance After School Dance Program Schedule of classes for school year MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY Ballet (3 rd -5 th ) 3:30-4:30 Mrs. Gartner B204 Tap (2 nd -5th) 4:30-5:15 Miss Amanda Jazz (3 rd -5 th ) 3:30-4:30 Ballet (k-2nd) 2:30-3:30 Jazz (K-2 nd ) 3:30-4:30 Description of Classes Jazz Level 1 (K-1 st ) Class emphasis is on learning proper execution of Jazz technique, as well as the free style associated with hip-hop movements. With or without experience, your student will grow and learn in this upbeat, fun class. Students learn proper body placement and alignment in order to jump, turn, and move efficiently as a dancer. Basic dance skills and vocabulary are introduced with an emphasis on self-expression and creativity. Jazz Level 2 (3 rd -5 th ) This program allows students to take the two most popular forms of dance in one class. This jazz/hip hop class teaches fundamental jazz steps and combines the elements of hip hop moves and contemporary Christian music. We have found that the combination of jazz and hip hop is ideal for this age. Students learn the necessary elements of jazz which are crucial to success in hip hop, but also get to learn hip hop moves which require the coordination and balance learned from jazz. With or without experience, your student will grow and learn in this upbeat, fun class. Ballet/Worship Level 1 (K-1 st ) To worship God in dance is biblical. The Bible commends it (Psalm 149:3; 150:4). Scripture gives many references to the use of dance as a form of joyous celebration and of reverent worship. This class teaches the essential foundations of ballet and praise/worship dance to develop grace and rhythm. It introduces basic positions and steps with a focus on exploring coordination, balance and rhythms. Basic dance skills and vocabulary are introduced with an emphasis on selfexpression and creativity. Ballet/Worship Level 2 (3 rd -5 th ) This class continues with the teaching of essential foundations of ballet and praise/worship dance to develop grace and rhythm. It introduces basic positions and steps with a focus on exploring coordination, balance and rhythms. Higher level dance skills and vocabulary are introduced with an emphasis on self-expression and creativity. Tap Level 2 (3 rd -5 th ) This class takes beginning level tap steps and combines them into choreography. Students will review fundamental footwork and vocabulary used in tap technique as well as the awareness of beat, timing, and rhythm. There will be an emphasis on syncopation and varied rhythms as well as foot work. **Students will be placed in levels by the dance instructors. The grade levels shown are given as a general guide of where a student who has been disciplined in the study of dance should be. If a student is new to the program they will need to start in a level 1 class to be assessed by the teacher. This will ensure a proper learning environment for all students. We want to make sure all students are challenged correctly at their level of dance. **

2 Classes begin the week of August 28 th There are no classes on holidays or Upper and Lower school ½ days TUITION 4 payments of $100 are due as follows for one class per week ($80.00 for any additional classes): 1 st payment and costume fee due upon registration - August 2 nd payment due November 1 st 3 rd payment due February 1 st 4 th payment due April 1 st Costume fee of $70.00 (per class) due September 1st (for Spring Dance Performance on April 28th) *This fee is nonrefundable as costumes are ordered at the beginning of the school year. Tuition is not based on the number of classes per month, but is a yearly fee for the total classes provided in the school term. Registrations and fees are due and payable to Providence School- please put ProviDance or Jessica Gartner on envelope- can be turned in to the upper or lower school office. If you have any questions, please call the front office to leave a message, or at jgartner@prov.org. ************Payments must accompany registration form to secure a spot in the class************* Dress for Classes Please purchase shoes from a dance apparel store or costume store rather than Target or Payless. A proper dance shoe will give the correct foot support and a store clerk will be able to help with fit as dance shoes don t always compare to street shoe size. Ballet: -Black leotard and pink tights -Pink or black skirt may be worn -Pink ballet slippers -Hair pulled away from face in ponytail or bun Jazz: -Black leotard, tank top or fitted shirt -Black spandex shorts (conservative length), capri pants, leggings or jazz pants -Black jazz shoes -Hair pulled away from face in ponytail or bun Tap: -Black tank top or fitted shirt -Black spandex shorts (conservative length), capri pants or leggings -Black tap shoes *** please see note above- dance shoes purchased from Target/Payless to not support the foot properly and do not make the correct sounds when tapping.

3 Dance Instructors Mrs. Jessica Gartner Ballet/Dance Director Mrs. Gartner grew up dancing in Cleveland, Ohio and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance Education from Kent State University and her Master of Arts in Middle Childhood Education from Ursuline College. She also studied dance with the Dancing Wheels Dance Company in Cleveland and with Lynn Simonson and Luigi in New York City. Mrs. Gartner taught creative movement, modern, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and tap at a Cleveland dance studio for 5 years in which she was also director of the competition team. While teaching at Dupont Middle School for four years, Mrs. Gartner created and coached the Dupont Dance Team. She is currently the Dance Director at Providence in which she directs the High School and Middle School Dance Companies and teaches Dance Exploratory, Dance Technique and Dance Composition. Miss Amanda Kardon Ballet/Tap/Jazz Born and raised in Jacksonville Florida, Amanda has been dancing all her life. Amanda has danced at local studios and schools here in Jacksonville including Polly B. Dance Academy, Marta Jackson School of Dance, Debbie s Dance Company, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and Providence School. Amanda has received many top awards while she competed in dance for 6 years and was selected as the Dancer of the Year at Debbie s Dance Company her Junior year of High- School. Amanda received a full dance scholarship to Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida where she worked with several professional artists from all around the world and was selected by faculty to attend Emory University to perform and compete for the Florida Dance Association. Amanda was also a part of Danza at the University of Florida, which is a student run organization of dancers who rehearse and put on several shows throughout the course of a semester. Amanda is now excited to be attending the University of North Florida where she is majoring in Education while teaching for the ProviDance program and directing the Providence Lower school dance company, His Company.

4 The ProviDance after school dance program is approved by Providence School, but is not a school sponsored event. From there, they will be escorted by their dance teacher to change, and then go to their dance class. All parents are to wait downstairs in front of the gymnasium to pick up students after class is over or, students will be escorted to extended day if they are enrolled in extended day. I will send an to your student s teacher to let him/her know to drop your dancer off in the cafeteria on her dance day. 5 Policies and Procedures Providence is a school that strives for excellence in all areas of study, whether academic, athletic, or artistic. The after school dance program, ProviDance, is no exception. The following policies and procedures have been created by the ProviDance teachers to ensure that your child will receive a quality dance education. After you have read the following policies and procedures, please sign in agreement and return this form to Mrs. Gartner or with your child at her dance class. Students will not be able to participate if the form is not signed. If you have any questions please contact Jessica Gartner at jgartner@prov.org. *Dress: Students must be dressed according to dress code. *Dance floor: Street shoes and food/drink are to be kept on the tile floor in the dance room. *Discipline: Dance is an art form that requires much self-discipline. The dance teachers will teach and model this in the dance classes. Students that have difficulty maintaining self-control may be asked to sit out during a class until proper behavior is maintained. If a child s behavior becomes a constant distraction to the learning of others, the parents will be contacted and the student will be dismissed from the dance class if behavior does not improve. *Attendance: Consistent attendance is required to learn and progress in proper dance technique. If a student has more than three absences the parents will be contacted. Consistent absences (more than four) will result in a student being withdrawn from the final dance performance as the learning of choreography is dependent upon all students being present. *Pick Up: Students will be picked up at the main entrance of the school in front of the gym. Students will wait inside with their dance teacher for safety purposes. Please be sensitive to the instructor s time. If a student is not picked up within ten minutes of the end of the dance class, a $5.00 fee will be charged and $5.00 for every 5 minutes thereafter. Your understanding and consideration is appreciated. I assume all the risks associated with participation in the Providence after school dance program and agree to hold the Providence School of Jacksonville, Florida, its employees, agents, representative harmless from any kind of liability which may arise by or in connection with my participation in the ProviDance activity.
