Lower School students raised over $1,100 in coins, and Upper School students raised over $2900. In Upper School Chapel on that week, student leaders of the Iolani Peace Institute spoke about the impact of recent hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and fires in the US, the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Mexico, India and Indonesia. They shared stories of hope - stories of first responder rescues and ordinary citizens who have risked their own safety and well-being to help others. They ended Chapel by showing the Gospel choir performance of the song Lean on Me that aired on The Tonight Show. After Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, the Gospel choir sang at a Texas shelter for Harvey evacuees. A video of their performance went viral, attracting the attention of Americans across the country, including Jimmy Fallon, who hosted the singers on his show. Upper School students collected donations in homerooms and wrote letters of encouragement to first responders. Many first responders travel long distances and have been away from home and family for weeks. Students also wrote letters of support and encouragement for natural disaster victims during lunch period.

2 All donations will go to UNICEF, the United Nations Children s Emergency Fund, which stands ready in the affected areas to provide food, water, shelter, protection and health care for children and their families before, during and after natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, and flood. Special thanks to our student Peace Institute leaders for their work on the Raiders for Relief campaign and chapel: Brooke Bolton '19, Emily Osurman '19, Megan Tagami '19, Elijah Nadamoto '19, Trinity Myers 19 and Kimberly Seif '18. Pet Blessing St. Francis of Assisi is known for his love for all of God s creatures. It is tradition in the Episcopal Church to bless animals on or near his Feast Day (Oct 4). Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. May we think of you and thank you when we love, play with and care for these members of our family. We ask you, O God, that we may be good to our pets always, so that they may be happy and healthy. This we ask to your eternal praise, and to our blessing. Amen. Last Sunday, in the shadows of the out-stretched arms of the magnificent tree at the lower school autoline, ʻIolani faculty, staff, students, and family members gathered for the annual St. Francis Pet Blessing. Pets are a source of love and companionship to those who care for them. Chaplains Nicole Simopoulos-Pigato, Heather Patton-Graham, and Daniel Leatherman were greeted with wagging tails, friendly paws, and wet kisses as they offered individual blessings to each dog, cat, guinea pig, and stuffed animal.

4 Additionally, the ʻIolani Animal Welfare Club collected over $50 for the Hawaiian Humane Society. Donated items included cash contributions, used towels, and dog and cat treats. Thank you to ʻIolani parent, Masako Dix (Hiro ʻ26) for being our photographer. One Day song performance In Upper School Chapel, a group of students and faculty offered their performance of the song One Day by Matthew Paul Miller. Miller is popularly known by his stage name, Matisyahu, which means Gift of God in Hebrew. Matisyahu is an Orthodox Jewish American reggae vocalist, and his song One Day expresses a hope for an end to violence and a prayer for a new era of peace and understanding. Aiyana Adams '18 was the lead vocalist with Dr. Steve Borick singing harmony. Student musicians included Noah Lau 18 on ukulele and Ricardo Tran 19 on the cajon.

6 Our faculty musicians included Dr. Borick on guitar, Mr. Manny Dayao on piano, and Ms. Ching on the organ. 12th Annual Celebration of Mahatma Gandhi Day On October 2nd, the International Day of Nonviolence, student members of the Iolani Peace Institute attended the annual celebration of Gandhi's birthday at the Waikiki statue of Gandhi in front of Honolulu Zoo. Haeri Kim '20 was a lei greeter for the event. Brooke Bolton '19 and Jake Steiner '18 were the emcees. Elijah Nadamoto ( 19) and other students hosted an informational table about the Iolani Peace Institute.

7 Additionally, Mr. Peter Greenhill received an award from the International Organization of Human Rights for "dedication, leadership, and support" in the areas of humanitarian work and human rights. Master violinist Master teacher Sabrina Hopcker worked with three violinists, Emi Horii, Maya Camacho, and Liana Owen. Ms. Hopcker s training in Germany and Spain along with her concert career in Europe and the United States have given her a very extensive background in the

8 technique and musicianship needed to succeed at the highest levels. She worked intensively with the well-prepared students, demanding tremendous attention to the smallest details. All three violinists showed an impressive ability to adjust to and incorporate Ms Hopcker s complex suggestions on the spot. Lei for Las Vegas Students in Halau 'Iolani lovingly picked ti leaves and wove them together as a contribution to the Lei of Aloha effort for victims of the Las Vegas shooting. This symbol of love is to help with the healing process of Hawaii's "ninth island."

9 Kumu Ku Souza and Kumu Lehua Carvalho asked students to spend class time this past Friday to make lei while sending prayers, good wishes and aloha with every twist they put into making their lei. The lei will be joined together with others from the community to create a 2-mile long ti leaf lei that will be taken to Nevada. Here is a news story about the inspiring project Varsity Football wins over Pac-Five Our varsity football team closed out the ILH regular season with a 34-0 victory over Pac-Five on Saturday afternoon. Having won three of their last four games, our Raiders now move on to the ILH Division II Tournament, which represents the "second round" of league competition.

11 1 We'll host Saint Francis on Friday in the tourney semifinals. Kickoff at Eddie Hamada Field is set for 3:15 p.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of Damien vs. Pac-Five on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Aloha Stadium for the tournament title. If any team other than regular-season ("first round") champion Damien wins the tourney, that would force a winner-take-all playoff for the ILH D-II crown. A visit from Bobby Webster `02 and the Toronto Raptors Toronto Raptors General Manager Bobby Webster '02 returned to his alma mater on Tuesday as his team practiced in our Lower Gym to prepare for their second NBA preseason game later that night versus the Los Angeles Clippers at the Stan Sheriff Center. Bobby was promoted by Toronto this summer, becoming the youngest GM in the league at the age 32. Upon his return to 'Iolani, Bobby was reunited with old friends, teachers, coaches... and the HHSAA State Boys Basketball Championship Trophy that he and his teammates won in Bobby also had time to take a quick tour of campus, including a visit to the Sullivan Center.

12 2 After practice, some of the Raptors, including NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan, signed autographs and took pictures with our students. ILH Cheerleading Competition The 'Iolani cheerleading program hosted the second ILH Competition of season on Friday night. The Raider varsity team finished second to Sacred Hearts, and our intermediate and JV squads both took first!

14 4 The 'Iolani Dance Team also performed an exhibition routine for the large crowd in the Lower Gym. All three teams will be back in action at the ILH Championships on Friday, Oct. 20, hosted by Kamehameha. Go Raiders! Campus Expansion Update The sites are being cleared for construction to commence. One of the exciting aspects of the project is the harvesting and reuse of trees for the Natural Playground. The plan will nearly triple the number of trees planted versus those taken down for the project and everything from outdoor musical instruments to benches and balance beams will be made from the trees removed. Below is a description of the different play areas within the Natural Playground as well as general planning diagrams for tree reuse. The final photo shows a limb that s been marked and tagged with an ID code for future use in the Nproject.
