The Last Cold Duck Open The Cold Duck has been a major skeet shoot in North East Texas for many years. Much of that time, there was a waiting list to be invited to this shoot. While at the Briley Louisiana Open, John Hill told me that the last Cold Duck Open will be held at Rose City Flying Clays in Tyler, Texas July 31-August 1, John sent me the attached flyer. Doug Frey Louisiana Briley Open Lafayette Skeet Academy The Briley Louisiana Open has become the premier skeet shooting event in Louisiana. It just gets bigger and better each year. If you missed it this year all I can say is you really missed out on a great shoot, great food and fellowship with some really great folks. This year the shoot had 120 shooters from 14 states. The weather was warm but not so hot that David s ice cream machine couldn t cool us down. There was enough of a breeze to keep things interesting. No thunderstorms this year! The targets were great and the referees were excellent. I believe David had them all drink carrot juice each morning. On the suggestion of Shoot Chairman, Gordon Benoit, I took the opportunity between events to interview a number of the people attending this shoot. Following are the questions I asked and the responses: Jacob Young Is this your first time to come to the Briley Louisiana Open? Yes Sir. Are you having fun? Yes Sir, so far. How did you do today? Shot 93 in 12 gauge first time to shoot registered targets. Any straights? I had a straight in the third round. Did they shoot your hat? It was the second straight I have ever shot. What s your favorite part so far? Getting out there and doing a good job. Doug Drummond Are you having fun? I always have fun at these skeet shoots, it s the best thing I think everyone ought to do this. What is the best thing so far today? Fried shrimp and fried catfish were good. The ice cream was good and the desserts were good. Did you try the pork grillades and sausage? I did not try it because I got full on the other. Page 2 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 7 Page 3 Louisiana Briley Open Lafayette Skeet Academy, cont. Larry Kay Are you having fun yet? Yeah I am, I am looking forward to tomorrow. Someone told me you were wore out today because of the practice session yesterday. I had a 5 hour practice session yesterday and went through 18 boxes. Did it pay off for you? Yeah, yeah, yeah! Larry Oxford What s the most fun part for you so far? Watching Dennis shoot 97 this morning. I really enjoyed that. Was he over his head or what? Yeah, he s really not that good. It was fun to watch him! Dennis Burnham What was your secret this morning? Eating lots of ice cream and having Larry watch me shoot a 97. Barry Telford What do you have to say for yourself? I should have stayed at home. What is the most fun thing you have done so far? Eat. What was your favorite thing that you have eaten so far? I like the fried shrimp and they have got some chocolate fudge that is outstanding! How many have you had so far? I think they are sugar-free, because I am diabetic. But I have had about 6 pieces.

Louisiana Briley Open Lafayette Skeet Academy, cont. Josh Wells Where are you from? Dallas. Are you having fun yet? Oh Yeah! What s your most favorite thing so far? Just got here. Did you get here in time for lunch? No. According to everyone else I have talked to the shrimp was a hit. Charlie Shriver Did you just get here too? Just got here. What are you most looking forward to? The food a big reputation about the food. Have you been here before? No You see me. I used to weigh 150 lbs. Really, before today? Yes, way before today. Coming to these things will do it to you. I can promise you, you will not be disappointed. Are you from Dallas also? No, from Plano. Richard Haas Are you having fun yet? Oh, yeah! Where are you from? Austin, Texas. How are you doing today? Did okay - I got a 97 and that s alright for me. Was that in doubles? No that was in the 12 gauge. What s been the most fun thing so far? It s just a great shoot every year. How many have you been to? This is my 2 nd one. You have to decide if you are going to shoot or if you re going to eat. Casey Jones Did you knock one out of the park today? A 98 in 12 gauge and a 91 in doubles. Is this your first time to come to the Briley Louisiana Open? Yes it is. How long have you been shooting? About 6 years. Page 4 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 7 Louisiana Briley Open Lafayette Skeet Academy, cont. Gordon Benoit Page 5 Gordon Benoit is the Shoot Chairman. Have you been pleased with the turnout this year? It s been excellent, beyond what we had dreamed. With this economy and things going on the way they are now, in this part of the state especially. Very pleased! Not everybody knows that one of the reasons you hold this shoot is for a fund-raiser, right? Right. What do you do with the monies raised? We have been doing a series of youth shoots, where we get the area youth in the parishes around here. You are trying to get them involved in the sport? Yes, gun safety is paramount, but getting them interested in the game. Expose them to the game and hopefully get a few shooters. Y all had a big shoot here for the kids a few months ago, I remember reading about that. How many showed up for that. We had 70 kids, from everywhere from East Texas to Southeast Louisiana. And you have about 120 shooters at this shoot and what s the farthest any of them came from? We have one shooter from California and from the East coast, probably Alabama. Any from out of the continental United States? Not yet, but we are working on that. Mike Vickers What was your highlight of the shoot? I have had 2 so far, my first one was all of the Junior shooters that we have got today who are all really shooting well! Who is doing well today? Brennan McNamee is doing well, Kyle Knighton is doing well and I saw a little while ago Bailey Glenewinkle, who is a Junior All American doing very well. It is just wonderful to see all those Junior shooters. That is great. My other highlight was now this was really something this shows you a top rate shoot. I saw Gordon Benoit in a golf cart delivering ice cream! There might have even been some brownies with that ice cream. Now that doesn t happen anywhere else in the world! First Rate! Leron from Coast Rifle & Pistol Club In Mississippi What is your most fun thing so far? The food has been fantastic, and I haven t missed a bird yet. But I haven t shot at a bird yet either. So far it has been fantastic weather, actually there is a pretty nice breeze. But of course we are sitting in the shade next to a big fan. It has been nice and no rain storms like last year. Is this your first year to come? This is my first time here. What brought you this time? I am going to try to break some targets. Was there anything particular about this shoot that attracted you, anything about the reputation of the shoot? I heard it was a good shoot, I heard the food is great and I heard the targets are good and the people have been acceptable ha ha ha ha!

Louisiana Briley Open Lafayette Skeet Academy, cont. Jake Terrebonne Are you having fun today? Yes sir I sure am! How did you do today? Could have done better, did alright on doubles. What did you do in doubles? 75 [and in the] 12 gauge shot an 87. The wind got the best of me. What has been the most fun part so far? Probably the different type of people here. They have some of the best shooters in the world. This is probably the best shoot of all times. There are a lot of good world class shooters here aren t there? Yes sir. Are you looking forward to tomorrow? Yes sir, that s for sure. Have you got your strategy figured out? Have fun. There you go. Pat Parker Where are you from? Hot Springs, Arkansas. That s where we went on our honeymoon. You came all the way down here to eat? Absolutely I have been hearing about this for years from John and I said the next time it comes up, let s go. So we are here! The food is on the list of a lot of people s reasons they are here today. We are glad you came. Glad to be here. Walter Williams President of LSSA Are you having fun at the Briley Louisiana Open? I am going to have fun at the Briley Louisiana Open, to this point I am not having a bunch of fun. It s part of your strategy? Yeah, I am moving forward to a culmination here. So what s the best part so far? Being with my wife on a weekend and with good friends. That s a good statement I haven t gotten that one yet so I am going to print that one. What s the 2 nd best thing that has happened so far? The 2 nd best thing is we went to CVS this morning and had a good time. At CVS, the pharmacy? Yes, we went shopping. So what are you looking forward to this afternoon? I am looking forward to being able to be here with good people, good food and good friends. Page 6 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 7 Page 7 Louisiana Briley Open Lafayette Skeet Academy, cont. David Hebert What has been the most fun part of the shoot for you so far? (I think I interrupted his nap) Were you pleased with the turn out? Very. I had a very interesting conversation when I tried to interview your wife yesterday. She does the talking for us. I said what has been the most fun part so far and she said I d have to say washing dishes. She said that and cleaning toilets. She said she wasn t going to give me anything worth printing. I am looking forward to eating some of your famous pies tonight. Those come from Lea s Lunch Room in LeCompte. We ll give them a plug. If you are real nice to them they will cut em up for you in 12 pieces. So how many states do we have people from today? Do you know? No I don t know, but we can count the flags. I counted 11, but I could be wrong. (I was, there were shooters from 14 states.) Stuart McCoin Have you been having fun? Yeah, it s a nice shoot. What s your favorite part of the shoot? I guess it s the people a friendly group of people. Do you come every year? I think this is my 3 rd or 4 th year. Where are you going to shoot next? I am going to a shoot in Oklahoma City. Do you live in Oklahoma? I do, so it is pretty close.

Louisiana Briley Open Lafayette Skeet Academy, cont. David Robustelly Where are you from? Sheridan, Arkansas. Where do you shoot up there? Blue Rock. That is in? Little Rock. Are you having fun? Yeah, I always have a good time at this shoot. Have you been here for every one? No, I have been here twice. After your first one you are hooked and have to come back, huh? Well, it is relatively close to home. What s your favorite part about it? Just seeing a lot of folks that you don t get to see very often. Do you enjoy the food? Yeah. What s your favorite food item so far? Probably the seafood sauce picante.?(fledgling reporter failed to ask his name) Are you having fun yet? Certainly, I always have fun. Are your squad mates treating you right? I have a super squad. What s been the most fun part of this shoot for you? So far, probably the food, don t get me wrong, the shoot has been great. It s a wonderful place to shoot. Sandy Williams Are you having a good time? A marvelous time. What s your favorite part of what s going on here this weekend? The friends - the fellowship. What s your second most favorite part? The food - the ice cream. Dee Hawthorne Where do you come from? Monroe, Louisiana. Are you having fun this weekend? I am having a ball. What has been the most fun thing you have done so far? I am not here to shoot, so the socializing has been wonderful, seconded by the food. Page 8 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 7 Page 9 Louisiana Briley Open Lafayette Skeet Academy, cont. Mark Knighton Where are you from Mark? Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Are you having fun? We are having a blast! What has been the most fun part of the shoot for you so far? The people, I think that is the funnest part for us. Of course I am shooting poorly but I am still having a good time. The people and the food are the best part. As you can tell, in addition to terrific targets and friendly competition, this shoot is famous for the food. The menu of homemade delicacies included: Fried shrimp, fish, cold slaw & French fries Pork grillades & sausage Boiled shrimp Chicken sauce picante Rice dressing Pulled pork Corn machoux Doves Bread Pudding w/rum sauce Pineapple Cobbler Energy Bars (aka chocolate & peanut butter fudge) Brownies Pies from Lea s Lunch Room Soft serve ice cream all day every day! Chocolate covered Red Velvet Cake Balls Seafood sauce picante over rice (David Hebert s secret recipe loaded with shrimp and crab) Peas Pork Chops cornbread dressing Corn No doubt, we missed something on our menu list. I think you get the picture. Of course, the main attraction was the shooting. That was facilitated by some great refereeing by: Alan Cline Chief referee Gilbert Wolfe Rayburn Rash Jerry Provorse Ray McBride Rex Powers Johnna Rister Minka Misangyi

Big Blue Open Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club, Barksdale, AFB On Saturday, June 27 th, Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club hosted the Big Blue Open. We had a terrific turnout with 22 contestants. Of those, five shot their very first registered skeet targets! Welcome to the fun! The temperature on Debbie s car thermometer showed it to be 103 at 6:30 PM, as we were driving back from the club. The clouds we requested for shade were late arriving, but that didn t keep our contestants from posting some pretty good scores. Harry Hawthorne II took the 20 Gauge Championship with a 99. Harry is deadly with the 20 gauge. The.410 Bore Championship was taken by Wayne Tanner who smoked em with a 99. The temperature wasn t the only thing that was hot! The Doubles event required a four man shoot-off to determine the Champion, Runner Up & 3 rd places. Charles The Hammer Richardson was the last man standing, defeating Walter Williams III, Harry Hawthorne II and Robert C. Miller. Dining on the Road Recently, I had the pleasure of having a business lunch at Fezzo s Seafood, Steakhouse and Oyster Bar. There are actually three Fezzo s Restaurants. One is located in Crowley, Louisiana and two in Scott, Louisiana (near Lafayette). I dined at the Scott location at 720 I 10 Service Road. You have probably seen this restaurant if you have drive on I 10 West of Lafayette. Fezzo s is owned and operated by Phil Faul and Pat Bordes, II. The restaurant is named after Phil s father whose nickname was Fezzo (pronounced FEE-zo ). Phil s father played with his mother s wooden thread spools as a child. The Cajun word for those spools is Fezzo. He carried them with him everywhere. The local Postmaster gave him the nickname and it stuck. Making my lunch choice was very difficult. Al around me dinners were enjoying gumbo, fried oysters, grilled fish, crawfish etouffee, seafood platters, crawfish platters and all of the other South Louisiana favorites. Knowing that I was attending the Briley Louisiana Open the next few days at which I would eat way to much, I exercised good judgment. I selected a delicious grilled crawfish salad and bread pudding for dessert. No doubt I will pass this way again. When I do, I will sample one of the daily specials which might be baked potato with etouffee, stuffed chicken breast topped with crawfish and Tasso, grilled catfish with shrimp sauce or possibly the crawfish half and half. You can check out Fezzo s on the web at By Doug Frey Page 18 RED CHUTE GAZETTE
