1 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE JULY 2017 Woohoo it s summer! I have to say it has been a pleasant one so far. As we start to miss all of you during our down time, it garners more excitement for my two favorite CCLI events. First there is the annual picnic on July 16th. A great day to have a great time with some BBQ, games and oh yeah, don t forget to wear something you don t mind getting soaked in! Find information a few pages into the newsletter. The other event you do not want to miss is Chinese-American Night at Eisenhower Park on August 6 th. Always a wonderful and free show! I can t wait to see the new and repeating acts. Bring your lawn chairs and find a spot on the great lawn. Stay cool and see you all soon! 2 TAG SALE ON JUNE 10TH On Saturday, June 10th, the Center held its semiannual tag sale fundraiser. This event has become very popular in West Hempstead and the community looks forward to it. Many volunteers came out to help set up and stayed to the end for clean up. A huge thank you to the tag sale team: Betty Leong, Sham Gee, Mona Ng, George Wing, Peter Gong, Peter Au, Kelly Ng, Stephanie Tang Bartoldus, Rose Lowe, Irene Gong, Karanda Shuen, Edgar Sit, Ellen Gee, Dorothy Lin, Shirley Shing, Pauline & Wyman Li, and Bob Wong. The weather was beautiful with no rain in sight. Keep your eye out in the newsletter George Wing, CCLI s own master dealmaker, with another happy customer. for the next tag sale in the fall. Donations will be needed! Customers of all ages examining the goods looking for bargains. A sampling of the many Center members who volunteered throughout the day Rose Lowe (2 nd from right) fed volunteers Dorothy Lin & Peter Gong with her homemade fried rice. CHINESE CENTER ON LONG ISLAND PERFORMS AT HERSHEYPARK On Saturday, June 17th, the Chinese Center on Long Island were at Take the Stage in Hersheypark, Pennsylvania to put on a cultural performance for the park s attendees. Take the Stage is a special venue for local groups to showcase their special talents. Over 25 dancers in beautiful and colorful costumes from the Center performed dances from various provinces of China. The audience truly appreciated the beauty of these dances. 2

Because of the Chinese Exclusion Law and although the Chinese in America were only 120,000, over 20,000 men and women served in uniform in WW II. This group has not been recognized for their contribution and sacrifice. Most other ethnic groups have already received recognition and in official federal records from US Congress through legislation of their men and women who served in uniform in WWII. Please support this movement. Have Congress officially give them credit and be on official record as a Chinese American group serving honorably in World War II. Many of the records in the federal government are missing these files in the archives. For more information regarding this project and how you can make a difference, please contact Mrs. Wai Wah Chin, President at cacagny.waiwahchin@gmail.com or cell Please let her know I passed this information on to you. Thank you. Edward Chung, Chairman 4
