This document is intended to supplement rather than replace the official WYHA tryout policies and WYHA team selection documents. If anything within this document conflicts with those official policies, those shall remain in effect. You can eliminate some of that by knowing what to expect and being ready. This document can be your guide. As always, you will find information on what to do before the tryout sessions, what the association is looking for during tryouts and what to expect when they are complete. What s new this year? We strive to continually improve tryouts. This year, the biggest change you ll notice is the professional group of outside evaluators we ve hired for all levels of Boys Tryouts, having tested the approach at the Squirt level last year.* Our goal is to provide the highest level of rigor and consistency, for fair and accurate tryout outcomes for all. Regardless of anything else you might read or hear remember to have fun. That is the best way to guarantee putting your best skate forward this fall. *At the time of publication, outside evaluators are available for boys skater tryouts. WYHA is working to extend outside evaluators where possible, based on their availability. 2

3 What are warm-up sessions? There are optional and free open hockey sessions for all Pee Wee skaters and goalies to prepare for tryouts. Drills similar to those during tryouts will be reviewed and practiced during these sessions. You MUST be registered with USA Hockey and WYHA to participate in these sessions. We highly recommend that you attend these free warm-ups, to know what to expect. However, your participation is not used in evaluations in any way. GOALTENDERS ONLY To help get you ready for skills evaluation, goaltenders are strongly encouraged to participate in all warm-up sessions. In particular, you should attend the goaltender only warm-up which will focus on position skill drills. In addition, the remaining all player warm-ups will have a coach focused on goalies to help you prepare for tryouts. Warm-up session timing will be posted once finalized 3

4 Random Pools How do tryouts start? RANDOM POOLS All players start with position specific skills sessions. If you are trying out for goaltending only, attend the goaltenders skill session only. If you are trying out as a skater only, you will be randomly assigned to one skater only skill session. If you are trying out as both goaltender and skater, you should attend both types skills sessions suited up as goaltender or skater, for the position type. Goalies and skaters will then be placed into tiered sessions. Tiered session assignments could change each day thereafter for the remainder of tryouts. Session assignments will be posted to the WYHA website the night before tryout days. It is your responsibility to monitor the website and understand which session you must attend. Tryout timing will be posted once finalized 4

5 Tiered Groups How do tryouts progress? TIERED GROUPS At the end of each subsequent night, you may stay in your tier, move up or move down, based on the most recent night s performance. The first day of tiered groups will be a scrimmage. The second will be a scrimmage and the third will be practice. Initial and subsequent session assignments will be posted to the WYHA website the night before the scheduled session. It is your responsibility to monitor the website and understand which session you must attend. The tryout process is based on registration numbers; therefore, this process may change if the actual number of players changes. Tryout timing will be posted once finalized 5

6 What should you expect for Tryouts? All players who want to play on a WYHA Pee Wee Team at any level must attend WYHA tryouts, including skills sessions. Tryouts will consist of skills sessions, scrimmages, practices, and potentially outside scrimmages to paint a complete picture of each player. SKILLS Goaltenders have a goalie only skill session. Skaters will be randomly assigned one group for a skater skills session. Your overall skill proficiency will be evaluated based on this. SCRIMMAGES Tryouts will include internal refereed scrimmage sessions, that are either 4v4 or 5v5. PRACTICES Practices will include a set of drills to focus on specific skills and tactics. OUTSIDE SCRIMMAGES Upper tier of players may participate in two scrimmages with another association yet to be named. This scrimmage will be refereed by District 3 referees. 6

7 Illness/Injury Process What if I can t participate? In fairness to all players trying out, the only exception is if you are injured or ill and cannot participate in tryouts. What if I am too sick or injured to participate? If you are unable to participate in tryouts due to illness or injury, your parent is responsible for contacting the Travel Tryout Committee BEFORE TRYOUTS BEGIN. Written information from your physician detailing why you cannot participate and player history detailing past team assignments must be provided to the Travel Tryout Committee BEFORE TRYOUTS BEGIN. You will not be evaluated and placed on the appropriate team if this information is not provided. What if I get sick or injured in tryouts? Your parent is responsible for getting you a medical examination within 24 hours after the onset of illness/injury. The examining physician should provide written information detailing why you cannot continue. This information must be given by your parents to the Travel Tryout Committee within 24 hours after the medical exam. Who should we talk to regarding my progress? Parents should provide updates regarding your health status ONLY to the Travel Tryout Committee. The committee will communicate this information to Travel Coaches and outside evaluators. 7

8 Illness/Injury Placement What team will I get on if I can t complete tryouts because I m ill or injured? Travel Tryout Committee members and other applicable travel coaches at the appropriate level and outside evaluators will determine at which level (A, B, or C) you should be placed. The following general guidelines will be used for your team placement due to illness or injury. Your actual assignment may vary depending on registration counts as well as the final number of teams. FIRST YEAR PEE WEE If you played for an A or B1 team last year, you will be considered for A, B1 or B2 teams. If you played for a B2 team last year, you will be considered for B1 or B2 teams. If you played for a C team last year, you will be considered for B2 or C teams. SECOND YEAR PEE WEE If you played for an A level team last year, you will be considered for A or B1 teams. If you played for a B1 or B2 level team last year, you will be considered for A, B1 or B2 teams. If you played for a C level team last year, you will be considered for B2 or C teams. 8

9 Logistics What do I need to know from day 1? All skaters must wear Wayzata colors for every session of the tryout process. All players must wear a jersey with solid white sleeves, a yellow, gold or navy helmet, Wayzata colored breezers and Wayzata blue and gold team socks. You will receive a pair of Wayzata socks when you check in for the first day of tryouts. These will become your team socks, so do not lose them. Pullovers with tryout numbers will be assigned to you when checking in for the first tryout session and must be returned at the end of tryouts. You should arrive minutes prior to your session and must be ready to get on the ice 15 minutes prior to the start time. You must be on the ice for all assigned sessions unless previously excused by the Travel Tryout Committee. Any unexcused absence could impact your overall evaluation. 9

10 How will I be Evaluated? BY YOUR PLAY Pee Wee Tryouts What matters each tryout session, a panel of 4-5 independent evaluators will score you on a preset scale, following a common scoring structure. Evaluators are chosen for their hockey knowledge, do not have a player participating at this level and are trained in the process to consistently evaluate the participants. Evaluators look for complete players, with strengths balanced across: skills hockey sense, and positive contribution to team play. Scores from each evaluator are recorded and used for subsequent tier assignment and final team selection. Any player choosing to tryout as a goalie and skater will be evaluated and ranked based upon a combination of both goaltending and skater tryout results. You are evaluated for negative contributions to play as well. Inappropriate conduct or penalty situations will result in a decrease of your scores. This includes, but is not limited to: penalties use of foul language on or off the ice play intended to injure, illegal checks Keep in mind that scores from each session are compiled to create a final score for final team selection. In addition, each player has the opportunity to move up/down within tiers based on each night s session play therefore each and every session matters. 10

11 How are Teams Selected? AA TEAM evaluators scores have been finalized, the final AA team selection will be made by the AA team coaching staff and evaluators. A TEAM evaluators scores have been finalized, the final A team selection will be made by the A team coaching staff and evaluators. B TEAMS evaluators scores have been finalized, you will be ranked with other players by your final score. Round robin drafts are held for both the B1 and B2 levels to create equally balanced teams by level. C TEAMS Players not selected for a B2 team are ranked with C Pool players based on the final tryout session scores. A round robin draft is held if there is more than one team to create balanced C teams. Team selections will be made in accordance with the WYHA tryout policy and team selection policy documents and are final. 11

12 What will the final teams be? ONE AA TEAM 15 skaters* Up to 2 goaltenders** ONE A TEAM 15 skaters* Up to 2 goaltenders** TWO B1 TEAMS Up to 30 skaters* 2-4 goaltenders** TWO B2 TEAMS Up to 30 skaters* 2-4 goaltenders** TWO C TEAMS Up to 30 skaters* 2-4 goaltenders** * Skater counts, and team structure are subject to change based on final player registration counts, tryout evaluations other factors and should not be considered set in stone until teams are formed. ** Depending upon the final goaltender evaluations and their evaluated level of play, the final number of goalies on each team will be determined. 12

13 Tryout Schedule Tryout Process How will I know what team I m on? team selections are complete, you will be able to check the WYHA website to find your team assignment for the season. Information on when team assignments will be posted will be given during the tryouts. You will also be contacted by coaches providing information regarding team assignment and time and date of first practice. Please be aware that your first practice is often the very next day following tryouts. 13

14 Tryout Schedule Tryout Process What if I have questions about tryouts? Questions/concerns about the tryout process must go through a member of the Travel Tryout Committee. Do not bring those questions directly to travel coaches or evaluators. your questions to tryouts@wayzatahockey.org. What if I believe a mistake took place? Administrative errors not related to placement will be resolved as quickly as possible. We understand that the outcome of tryouts might not always be what you had hoped for. However, team selections are final. And in the end, everyone will be on a team, will have the chance to develop and enjoy playing this great sport. If you would like to share your concerns and get a better understanding for why you ended up on your team, tryouts@wayzatahockey.org. Grievances will not be discussed on the phone. All contact regarding grievances will not be accepted until one week (7 days) after the completion of your level s final tryout session. Every player/parent who wishes to have a meeting to communicate concerns will have one, as we value your feedback. In any case, you should plan on attending your team practices as scheduled. 14
