1 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY MASCOT TRYOUT INFORMATION Tryout dates: April Place: East Campus Volleyball Complex TRYOUT PROCEDURE The sessions on Friday and Saturday will be a time to learn about being a collegiate mascot. The individual tryouts will begin at 1:30pm on Saturday. Each person will need to arrive early to his/her scheduled tryout. The tryout is closed to the public. The tryout location is at the East Campus Volleyball Complex. Please wear casual attire on Friday and athletic attire on Saturday. Athletic attire includes shorts, a tee shirt or athletic shirt, and athletic shoes. Do not wear any jewelry. Men must look neat and clean-shaven. Ladies must wear their hair all the way up on Saturday. It is just as important that mascots are growing in their walk with Christ over the summer through personal devotions, church involvement, and/or through camps and missions trips. Our team will return to campus at the end of July to prepare for the UCA mascot college camp in Scranton, PA. Mascots are expected to check their Liberty accounts regularly over the summer. 4 TRYOUT OVERVIEW INTERVIEW The interview will be conducted right after the skit. WALK The most important part of a mascot s character is the character walk. This walk will be taught in clinic and will be assessed as follows: Animation of Walk Character Consistency Exaggeration DANCE The dance will be judged on originality, exaggeration, and crowd appeal. Two songs will be chosen at random, and the mascot will be required to dance to portions of each song. CREATIVITY You will be judged on the creativity of the skit. Ask yourself, Has this ever been done before? Your answer should be, No. ANIMATION This will also be judged as part of the skit. Animation will be judged on one principle: How cartoonlike are you in the suit? Would you give Mickey Mouse a run for his money? IMPROVISATION The improvisation will be held on the day of tryouts and will be in the suit. You will be asked to do an improvisation for seconds and will include game day situations you might come across while performing the job of mascot. It will be evaluated as follows: Creativity Crowd Appeal Games IN-GAME APPEARANCE The top five candidates will perform for a portion of a live sporting event and will be evaluated as follows: Character Traits Crowd Appeal Creativity (Walk, Personality, etc.) (How entertaining are you?) 5 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY MASCOT CONTRACT As a member of the Liberty University Mascot Team I,, fully accept the policies set forth by the program and the university and promise to do my best to portray a positive selfimage at all times. I will support and respect the values of the mascot program as well as the athletics staff, coaches, and athletes at all times. Please note the following commitments as part of the Liberty University Mascot Team: Members are responsible for showing up to all appearances they are scheduled to work. This includes, but is not limited to, LU games, campus and off campus appearances. Members are expected to act in a professional manner while communicating with appearance host. Lastly, members are expected to be prompt and on time to appearances. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required to be a part of the LU Mascot Team. Academic help is available for all members. It is expected of all members to give full effort at all times. At every appearance the integrity of the character should never be questioned. Members are expected to never break character while in suit. Members are expected to protect their own identity and that of fellow performers. Members should never be seen by anyone outside of the mascot team while partially dressed in the suit. Using the outfit for anything other than performing Sparky is immediate grounds for removal from the team. Sharing the outfit with anyone who is not on the team is forbidden. Members are expected to show up to all scheduled practices and character/team development meetings. They are also expected to give a full contribution to the team in every aspect. The Liberty Way and any university policies apply to every member. Failure to comply with the above standards is grounds for removal from the mascot team.
