9 Respect Tag Equipment *Six dice cards. I have four die that have clear pockets on each side that I place the cards in. If you don t have pocket dice you could tape the cards to a dice or mount the tag cards on a wall and assign a corresponding numbers that students would use when rolling a number die. *Two foam discs for disrespect taggers *Three to six balls and two to three targets to toss balls in *Fifteen to twenty bean bags with a container that holds them *Some cones or poly spots to mark off the show me some respect area. *Using the song Respect from Aretha Franklin is a great way to start and stop the game. Game Students are scattered with one or two taggers. Depending on skill level you may have your students gallop and slide instead of run during the tag game. Remind them to show respect for the rules by being honest. If they fall down, crash or go out of bounds they must send themselves to the show me some respect area. If they are tagged by disrespect they must also go to the show me some respect area. While in the show me some respect area students roll the dice and follow the directions to re enter the game: Following are the dice card directions: *Rules: Be Honest-Throw three balls into the target without stepping over the line. *Equipment: Put it away and do not play-pick up five beanbags and put them away. *Self: Be Active and Be Safe-Do 10 jumping jacks without hitting anyone. *People: Be a Friend-Give two people a High 5. *Every Child: Include every child and don t go wild- Safely find a person you do not play with often and tell them something nice. *Teacher: Listen to them and follow directions-tell the teacher what each letter in the word RESPECT stands for (The chant from the dance) Rules-Equipment-Self-People- Every Child and the Teacher. Once the task is completed students may return to game. Students enjoy learning the chant. It is a fun challenge, like learning to say supercalafagilisticexpialadosious. See who can say the RESPECT chant the fastest!

10 Challenge Activities Splash Equipment: one beanbag or beanie baby per student, 7-10 blue hula-hoops preferably of different sizes, music to stop and start game. Set up: Hoops are scattered on the floor and students are scattered each with a bean bag or beanie baby. I use Mickey and Minnie Mouse beanie babies that try to jump into the pool, splash. Game: When the music is played students walk around and self toss/catch the bean bags. When the music stops students catch their bean bag and freeze in place. On the teacher s signal Splash students choose a hoop that will be a challenge for them (distance or size). A point is scored if the beanbag splashes in the hoop. (Stays in, bounces in, or lands in and bounces out). Students wait to pick up their beanbag until the music starts again. When first playing the game, before each signal of Splash remind students what a challenge is and how they can become Challengers by being at level 2 CHALLENGE Challenge Stations: Students travel to different stations and experiment on creating their own challenges. Basketball Dribble 10Xs in place using your favorite hand Challenge Possibilities: Increase numbers of dribbles, change side of body, add a trick Hit a large fluff ball with a racket as high as your head 5Xs (Have small and large fluff balls available) Challenge Possibilities: Increase numbers of hits, change equipment, add a partner, hit higher than head, change side of body (forehand/backhand) Hit a target 5Xsfrom 10 feet away. (Have a target that has both a small and large target) Challenge Possibilities: Increase number of hits, throw at small target, back up, add speed to throw Jump rope 10Xs forward on two feet Challenge Possibilities: Increase number, change directions, add a trick, add speed Catch a ball in a scoop 5Xs in a row to self Challenge Possibilities: Increase number, change balls, change height, add a person

11 Teamwork Activities I have this definition of Teamwork posted in the gym: Teamwork is a Friendly helping someone solve a problem or meet a challenge. This concept is easily reinforced with any cooperative tag game that involves rescuing or saving a tagged classmate who has the problem of being frozen or caught. A fun tag game to play is Jack or Jackie Frost Tag. Jack/Jackie Frost Tag One student is it either Jack or Jackie Frost. Students are counted off as either an ice storm or blizzard. Jack Frost calls out either blizzard or ice storm and the group called run across the gym trying not to get tagged. If they are tagged, fall down, go out of bounds or crash they become frozen at a medium level in a ready position. To save the frozen student their class mates must complete a snowman then they may come alive, join hands in a line and walk to the side of the gym where the other students are running towards. The tagger should not call out blizzard or ice storm if a snowman is walking towards the group. To build a snowman one classmate sits in front of the frozen student and another classmate stands behind the frozen student. Forming the snowman is a great review of levels. I use the following warm up to teach the snowman position used in the game. Scatter snowballs around the gym. Snowballs may be beanbags but I use white shower scrubbies. White shower scrubbies are another thing to add to your parent note looking for extra manipulatives and recyclables. Make sure to note you only want new white ones. This is a direction game where each direction has a different action and the teacher randomly calls out directions. 12 Under The Sea Game (1-4 and late Kindergarten) Equipment: Two hard Frisbees per pair of students, hula hoop for each pair of students. Sea creatures or a variety of equipment representing sea creatures, two to three scooters and two to three pipe insulation foam tubes, taggers and the song Under The Sea from Disney s Little Mermaid. Set Up: Students are paired up and have two Frisbees. Instead of holding hands they connect by holding the Frisbees. A hula-hoop is placed on the floor on one side of the gym for each pair of students to place their captured sea creatures in. I have a collection of beanie babies from the dollar store or rummage sales that are sea creatures. Scatter sea creatures or a variety of equipment (beanbags, fluff balls, yarn balls, spider balls) on the opposite side of the gym. Leave room between hoops and creatures for taggers to scoot on scooters. Two taggers sit on scooters as King Triton and Queen Athena. Taggers hold pipe insulation representing tritons that will be used to tag pairs of students who have captured a sea creature. Game: Students try to collect as many sea creatures without getting tagged while the music is playing and place them in their hula-hoop. Students must stay connected by holding on to the deck Frisbees. Using the two Frisbees like tongs, students squeeze and lift a sea creature and take it back to their hulahoop. If students drop a sea creature they leave it where it lies and return to their hula-hoop to do a designated activity such as 10 shoulder touches and then start collecting again. If King Triton or Queen Athena tags them, they must drop their sea creature and leave it where it lies and return to their hula-hoop to do a 10 shoulder touches, brushing the sting of the trident off. The students with the most creatures at the end of the song or designated time become the new King Triton or Queen Athena.
