College General Events: Thursday 8 March WORK DAY information has been given to your child/children. Kāpiti is celebrating Parks Week March by highlighting and celebrating the important role our parks play for people, communities, and the natural environment. Each day during Parks Week they will be profiling and holding events at one of our great parks. As a kick off to Parks Week Kapiti Coast District Council is holding a family fun day at Pharazyn Reserve in Waikanae on Sunday 11 th March. They would love to see as many Kāpiti families enjoying this great event- an afternoon full of great music, food trucks, free face painting, bouncy castle, the works! See flyer attached KC Talent Quest Wednesday 14 March at 7pm in the hall. Gold coin entrance. See flyer further in Shakespeare Day at Kapiti College Friday 23 March Careers:
Sports Events: Mountain Bike Club: The mountain bike club had two events on the weekend. Event one was a relay race called Creek to Peak where two college teams raced. Team KC (Eli and Josie) and Kuppa Tea (Isla, Millie, Brianna and Maia). Kuppa Tea won second in the females category and overall it was a great day out earning trail karma. Event two was a social ride at Mount Victoria where riders pushed themselves to their limit. Students stayed mostly in one piece and there was a lot of 'tree hugging' To join please Isla.day@kc.school.nz
Las Vegas US Tour 2018 Hoop Club Kapiti Basketball Coaching Programme For anyone wanting to learn Basketball or improve their Basketball Skills 11 to 17 year olds - Sundays to 12.30pm Paraparaumu College Community Gym, Mazengarb Road, Paraparaumu For further information - contact@hoopclubkapiti.nz or Atsuya Miyake & Rachel Pike at NZBA camp weekend of 24/25 February Kapiti Players Selected for New Zealand Basketball Academy Team for Las Vegas USA Tour July 2018 Capital Zone Rep basketball trials Information regarding U15 and U17 Capital Zone rep basketball is available in the flyer further into the newsletter. Kapiti Basketball Players Moss Whitman (ex Kapiti College student and KC Snr Boys Basketball Team), Rachel Pike (Paraparaumu College) Reserve Atsuya Miyake (KC International student) have been selected for the New Zealand Basketball Academy Age Group Teams to tour Las Vegas USA in July this year. All players put in strong performances at the trials held in 2017 with the final trials (a four-day camp) held in January and have been rewarded with securing positions in these top Age Group Teams. They will fly out in July ready to do their best against the best in the USA. Reserve Atsuya Miyake will continue to train with the Team as he could receive a call up at any time. A training camp was held on Sat 24 & Sun 25 Feb, with three more camps on 7 & 8 April, 13 May & 17 June leading up to the Tour departure on 15 July.
The purpose of the NZBA Tour is to expose New Zealand players to the intensity of the American style of play by competing against some of the best NCAA Club Teams in the USA. Playing at this level is excellent preparation for anyone with aspirations of gaining a USA University Scholarship. With 3 Tournaments being played the tour is intense, both for play, training, and compulsory study as students will be away from school at the start of Term 3. This is an amazing opportunity for these players. The competition at these USA tournaments is fierce, with all the top age group teams from around the USA attending along with recruiting Coaches and Scouts. The Teams will all be staying on the University of Nevada Las Vegas campus (UNLV) during the Tournaments in Las Vegas which also gives the players a feel for university life in the USA. This will be a wonderful experience for these players and will definitely show them where they need to be to be able to compete and be successful at that next stage and level of Basketball. He had never touched a pole vault until November when his dad entered him into a competition. Other competitors were very friendly and showed him the basics of how to do it. He then got a couple of hours coaching, just enough to get him a score. The competition at the weekend was an open competition with all age groups competing together and Lou running and throwing against some real competition in the Open Men s including two Olympians, one Japanese and the other a NZer, (Brett Newdick who competed at the London Olympics). His overall score across the 10 events (100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m) was He is now the NZ Under 18 Decathlon champion. Congrats Lou excellent result Congratulations again to these players - we are all extremely proud of you and your achievements to date. Talented athletes: Stevie Shipman Has made the extended squad with her swimming to be able to participate in the NZ Open trials in July. The top two in each distance will then be shortlisted and a final squad will be picked to compete at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We wish Stevie all the very best for this. Louis Northcott Lou showed off his talents at the weekend by competing in a Wellington open Decathlon competition.

Performing Arts/Cultural Events: Choir and Kāpiti Choral Festival Kapiti College Europe touring Choir performed on Saturday night at the inaugural Kapiti Choral Festival closing concert. This was their first appearance as an ensemble as they prepare for their European tour in April. The festival was not only a fantastic community event, combining 8 local community choirs, but a chance to fundraise for the choir. They were very surprised at the generosity of the choristers and members of the public. $2000 was raised from registrations to T shirt sales and meals. Huge thanks to everyone!
French Connection: Coastella: Last week, the senior French class (Y12 and Y13) was very lucky to host Solène and Héloïse, two university students from the Sorbonne in Paris. Solène and Héloïse are currently touring Aotearoa in the very first electric campervan. A partnership was established between Kapiti College and their former college, in the suburbs of Paris, and students exchanged letters to talk about their country and what is means to them to be environmental-friendly. Our students were really excited to discover letter from their French pen-friend - and write an answer to them. We hope new friendships will be created on the way! Kapiti College Band "Birds make me anxious" (Lily Fulton, Jared Hawke, Jason Brimblecombe, Sophie Weir and Simone Mccarthy) had heaps of fun performing last weekend at Coastella, as winners of the Senior section of the Bright Lights competition; it was a great platform for the band, and they got a super supportive crowd. They are hoping to perform again even better than this time round in 2019 :) Thank you to House of Sound and the Bright Lights competition for giving us the opportunity to perform on this stage
COMMUNITY EVENTS: KPAC Fundraiser push: The Kapiti Performing Arts Centre has been chosen for the Warehouse's 'Bags for Good' fund raising project. At the end of July, funds raised are given to each of the store community partners according to their percentage of total votes. Join the ZSQUAD & students from Kapiti & Paraparaumu College for a Zumba Party Fundraiser for GIRL UP! Everyone welcome, no dance experience necessary this is an open community event. Bring a drink bottle, comfortable clothing and a small towel and get ready to have FUN! Girl Up - Uniting Girls to Change the World Every girl, no matter where she's born deserves to dream.
