It is a small thank you and token of gratitude the dancers like to express to each other for all of their hard work. Also it is a nice encouragement to keep the energy up for the final performance! Lunch: Students should plan to bring a sack lunch and plenty of snacks. Lunches should be clearly labelled with each student s name. Students must also come with their own water bottle, also labelled with their name. Activities: Young ones especially may need something to keep busy with backstage. Coloring books, hand held video game, board game, cards are all good ways to keep busy and quiet backstage. Warm-ups: You may wear anything you want for warm-up class on stage provided you have a leotard and tights on underneath. Nude leotards are not considered leotards, but are an undergarment and may not be worn by themselves at any time. Be sure to bring your legwarmers, sweatshirts and sweatpants, and something cozy for over your ballet slippers. *Hair should always be completed before arriving at the theater. Backstage Etiquette and Safety These rules must be following during all dress rehearsals and performances: No photography backstage. Backstage chaperones will be available to assist performers and provide support. No parents are permitted backstage. No one is allowed backstage without a badge. Badges will be issued to cast and crew upon arrival at the theater and must be returned upon departure. Badges must be worn backstage at all times except when in costume. All performers must sign in and out for dress rehearsal and shows. All performers must arrive with hair and makeup done. Wait until a stage crew member comes to get you for your scene; you are not allowed backstage until a crew member comes to get you. All performers, participants and their parents should understand that we are guests in Spring Performance Packet

8 the performing facility and should treat the facility with the utmost respect. Talking must be kept to a minimum due to the proximity of the dressing room to the stage. No horseplay, running, wandering around the building. No eating or drinking in unauthorized areas. Only water is allowed on the stage. No loud noises or door slamming. Performers must not touch the rigging, lighting instruments, props tables, or scenery elements under any circumstances. (The lighting instruments are very hot and can easily burn a performer.) Performers must not go into the audience during any part of the performance. This creates unnecessary noise and movement in the backstage area and destroys the magic of the production for the audience. Designated volunteers will help younger performers backstage and ensure that these policies are followed. Children who do not follow these rules will not be cast in future productions or may even be excused from participation in the current production. In the wings the following special rules must be observed : No talking in the hall leading to the stage and in the wings. (Sound carries to the audience from the backstage area.) Quiet whispers can be used and only to communicate information that is critical to the running of the production. Only performers who are standing in place for the next scene should be standing in the wings. Standing or sitting in the wings for the purposes of watching the action on the stage, or standing around socializing in the wings, is not permitted. No peeking at the audience from the wings. Remember if you can see the audience, they can see you. Pay attention for your entrance cue. In the dressing rooms the following special rules must be observed: Keep dressing rooms clean and neat. Do not eat while in costume Neatly hang your costume when you take it off and put away accessories. Do not touch or move items that do not belong to you. Spring Performance Packet

9 Look around you before you leave to ensure your space is clean. Check with the Wardrobe Mistress, Alicia Russo before you leave the dressing room. On the stage the following special rules must be observed: Never jump off the front of the stage. Don t sit on the sides of the stage. No talking on stage. Reminders for Parents Once again, please review this handbook with your student. Students who do not follow these rules will not be cast in future productions or may even be excused from participation in the current production. These rules and policies are for the safety of the performers and for the purpose of enhancing the overall quality of the production. Following these rules will reduce the risk of injury to performers and will create a quality production that will delight our audiences and sponsors and provide a valuable dance training experience for every child. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication and for making this show possible! Have a wonderful time! In His Service, CAD Faculty Spring Performance Packet
