1 Arizona State University Cheerleading Policy Head Coach: Vanessa Napoleon Cheerleading Program Advisor: Mark Dunkerley Marketing Director: Steve Hank Members of the ASU Cheerleading Program support ASU through generating enthusiasm at athletic events as well as through fundraising events and promotions. Team members are selected for their skill, personality, academic performance and potential for contribution. The ASU Cheerleading Team is a competitive Division 1-A Program; however, competition is a privilege given by the University and can be denied if the program does NOT perform up to standard at their athletic events, fundraisers, and/or promotions. Support of ASU Athletics is always and foremost our number one priority. The ASU Cheerleading Program developed some policies below that will inform current and prospective cheerleaders, their parents, relatives, and other interested parties about the program. By joining the Arizona State University Cheerleading Program, you have become a representative not only of your team, but of your University. It is essential that you act responsibly and do nothing to jeopardize your opportunity to obtain maximum results from your university experience. Your personal conduct is a direct reflection on your good moral character and ethical judgment. You are expected to behave both on and off campus in a manner which brings credit to the University and to your team. Be aware of the image you are creating (or destroying). As long as you are a member of the ASU Cheer Program, you must abide by these rules. Therefore, this Code of Conduct applies during the academic year as well as during break time and summer vacation periods, and also on and off campus. I. PRACTICE & SUMMER SCHEDULE Summer practices are as follows: Open Gyms: Weight Training: see attached summer workout schedule EVERYONE at least 3 x week in weight room FIRST OFFICIAL PRACTICE FOR FALL IS MONDAY AUGUST 9, 2004 UCA CAMP August 11-14, 2004?? Will depart from ASU August10, 2004 to Santa Barbara, CA.?? Will return from UCSB to Tempe on August 14, 2004.

2 ?? Practice will be MONDAY thru THURSDAY (time and location TBA) the following weeks until 1 st day of classes. Regular practice schedule will begin once classes are in session. Fall Practices are as follows: Sunday desert storm elite (DSE) Monday 2:30pm on campus location Tuesday 2:30pm on campus location Wednesday DSE Thursday DSE Saturday GAME DAY / MUST LEAVE AVAILABLE During competition season, practices will vary & may go everyday at around these times. First mandatory practice for all team members of the ASU Cheer team is MONDAY AUGUST 9, 2004 Spring Practices are as follows: Monday TBA Wednesday TBA THURSDAY GAME NIGHT/ LEAVE AVAILABLE SATURDAY GAME NIGHT/ LEAVE AVAILABLE Practices will consist of game material, preparing routines for local cheer exhibitions and preparation for the upcoming year s tryout. Make sure you schedule your classes, work, etc. around practice times & games. If you have a class conflict you must get prior approval from the Head Coach. Work is not an excuse. It is a delicate balance between school, cheer, work and family/friends, but we all have to sacrifice. Practices are mandatory and you are expected to attend all practices on time. If you are going to be late or cannot attend practice, you must call the Head Coach at least two (2) hours prior to practice for approval. If you are feeling ill, go to the Health Center or the Training Room, get a note from our trainer or a Doctor, then call the Head Coach immediately. The following is a guideline for consequences of missed practice, game, and/or events: -- LATE TO PRACTICE (1 st offense) Warning -- LATE TO PRACTICE (2 nd offense) 2 mile run -- LATE TO PRACTICE (3 rd offense) Attend next 3 promotions -- LATE TO PRACTICE (4 th offense) Suspension or

3 -- First 2 practices missed (UNEXCUSED) 2 mile run -- 3 Practices missed or more (UNEXCUSED) Suspension or -- First GAME MISSED (UNEXCUSED) 2 mile run -- 2 or more Games Missed (UNEXCUSED) Suspension or -- ALL UNEXCUSED ABSENCES WILL DIRECTLY AFFECT TEAM S C0MPETITION PRIVALEGES II. GAMES In addition to practices, the team cheers at over 60 games a year. ASU CHEER supports Football and Men s/women s Basketball. We also will show our support at one event for all other competitive sports. Please note: Cheering at games are in addition to attending classes, practices, community services, performances, fundraisers and work. III. FUNCTIONS/EVENTS During the summer and academic school year, in addition to all the games, practices and pep rallies, cheerleaders attend a number of public relations and /or charitable events each year. Most functions/events don t require the entire team. At these instances, the Head Coach will send those members who need to make up and activity and/or ask for volunteers. Once a member commits him or herself voluntarily to an event, it becomes mandatory. The team will also conduct various fundraisers throughout the year. This includes: selling calendars/ shirts/ programs at the football & basketball games, hosting various cheer clinics and other miscellaneous functions that may arise. IV. TRAVEL During the course of the academic year, we will be asked to go to certain Football, Men s Basketball, and Women s Basketball away-games. Travel teams will be based on seniority, grades, attendance records at practice, games, events, and overall attitude in and out of practices. The Head coach will make all final decisions for the traveling team. We may be asked to go to BOWL games and Pac-10/Holiday tournaments. These special events fall on Christmas Break and Spring Break. It is important that you realize that you may not be able to go home for Christmas or go away for Spring Break. V. COMPETITION Competition is a PRIVALEGE given by the UNIVERSITY and may be denied if cheerleaders do not perform well at games, fundraisers and/or promotions. The National Team will consist of 16 members (most likely 10

4 guys/ 6 girls) and will be selected by the Head Coach. National s Team is not selected by seniority; it is totally based on skill and need. If chosen to be on the National s team, he or she must be able and willing to attend all National Team s practices, games, performances, and forfeits their right to leave during the Christmas break or any other dates that would conflict with practice or game schedule, unless approved by the Head Coach. Once chosen, he or she must fulfill all the requirements necessary to produce a winning routine. If injury, illness or extreme circumstances occur during this time, it is up to the Head Coach to decide if and who will replace the current member on the National s Team. VI. ALCOHOL/DRUGS/TOBACCO PRODUCTS Absolutely no one is allowed to participate in any function under the influence of drugs or alcohol, consume alcoholic beverages on team trips, at athletic events, or a departmentally sponsored functions. Drinking or doing drugs in uniform or in any other clothing that represents our program and/or the University is prohibited. Anyone caught under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the above situations will be terminated from the team. No tobacco products of any kind may be used while participating in practice or competition or while representing the University in any capacity. VII. DRUG TESTING It is ASU Policy to perform random drug testing throughout the year. VIII. GENERAL --A positive attitude must be maintained toward all members, coaches, and ASU representatives at all times. --Sportsman-like conduct must be maintained at all times. --All team members must report to all practices, games, ASU events, etc. in the following manner: ON TIME and ready to participate Neat in appearance and professional in appearance (NO EXPOSED TATTOOS, EARRINGS, BODY PEIRCINGS, etc. CLEAN SHAVEN, HAIR TIDY) Wearing the appropriate uniform Having all the equipment needed for that function (i.e. megs, poms, shoes, signs, briefs, etc.) --No jewelry (this includes nose rings, belly rings, and earrings)can be worn during practices, games and performances --All tattoos and piercing should not be visible at any time and must be covered in a safe manner when in uniform or at any ASU event. --No gum chewing or eating while participating at any practice and/or game --No horse playing or inattentiveness during practices, games, and meetings --No lying, cheating, or stealing.
