1 Solano County Fair August 1 5, 2012 Media Contact: Debbie Egidio 900 Fairgrounds Drive, Vallejo DTS Egidio (707) ph (707) ph (707) fx (707) fx SCFair.com debbie@dtsegidio.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 26, 2012 BAY STAGE AT THE 2012 SOLANO COUNTY FAIR TO FEATURE LIVE MUSIC RANGING FROM 1930s 1940s SWING, TO ROCK, TO KIDS POP, TO COUNTRY AND MORE; PLUS TWO POPULAR SOLANO COUNTY TALENT COMPETITIONS Solano County, CA The 2012 Solano County Fair, taking place August 1 5, promises five days packed with family fun including a great music and entertainment line up every day on the Bay Stage, presented by 95.3 KUIC. The daily Bay Stage schedule is in addition to five nights of FREE headline concert entertainment included with the price of admission, making the Fair the best entertainment value of the summer. We are really excited about ALL of the entertainment at this year s Fair, and the music acts on our Bay Stage are no exception, commented Fair General Manager Mike Paluszak. We have a wide range of music genres scheduled to perform on this stage along with variety acts, dance troupes, talent competitions and nightly performances by Hypnotist Steve Bayner. Add all this to our full schedule of entertainment and activities throughout the fairgrounds and it s more fun than you can take in in just one day! Bay Stage music kicks off on opening day, Wednesday August 1, with popular local singers The Honeybee Trio. The Honeybee Trio was formed in October 2008 and its three young singers, Sarah, Natalie, and Karli, were only 12 and 13 at the time. They were all aware of each other's vocal abilities as two of the girls had performed duets together, they had all performed in local talent shows, and they had all been members of the same musical theater groups. They had even discussed the possibility of doing a trio, but it wasn't until their artistic director, Debi McMindes, came along that this idea became a reality when she asked the three to work together for a special performance at a local retirement community. Though there were originally no plans beyond that one performance, it was clear that their combined talents produced something very special. And so, The Honeybee Trio was born. 2 from the 1930s and beyond in tight, three part harmony, with an emphasis on the 1930s and 1940s swing era. In the four years since their journey began, they have performed hundreds of times to enthusiastic audiences throughout California. Because of the nature of the songs in their repertoire, active military and veterans groups often request the girls to perform. They have formed a close association with Travis Air Force Base where they have appeared several times including at the Base Commander's retirement party, a "Welcome Home Warriors" event, the "Skies Over Solano" airshow, and a VIP reception for General Raymond Johns (Commander, Air Mobility Command). In addition, they have had the honor of meeting the First Lady and performing for Admiral Papp (Commandant of the Coast Guard) during commissioning of the USCGC Stratton. They have also had the privilege to entertain the public on the historic USS Hornet three times. Opening day entertainment on the Bay Stage also includes Abyss Rising, a native Northern California Bay Area band, bringing some new blood to the rock scene. Mixing hip hop, alternative and metal, the band is serious when it comes to arena rock sound. Combining years of experience and performances, Abyss Rising takes the feeling you get listening to your favorite bands and blends it into a sonic sensation suitable for all ages. Coming straight off their performance at the State Fair, the band promises a high energy start to evenings on the Bay Stage. Back by popular demand, The Hipwaders take the stage on Kids Day, Thursday August 2. The Hipwaders are a showcase for the kid friendly songwriting of Tito Uquillas and have won numerous awards and acclamations including a 2004 Parent's Choice Award for their first album, The Smile Project and a nomination by XM Satellite Radio as one of the best new kids' music acts of Their 2007 album, Educated Kid was voted #5 best album of the year in the Kids and Family poll and the title track went to #1 on the XM Kids Radio. 3 released during the 2009 Holiday season and won a NAPPA Honors Award in 2010 after receiving numerous enthusiastic reviews. The Hipwaders most recent album, The Golden State, was released August 2, 2011, with engineer/producer Willie Samuels at the helm. The album made many critics Top 10 lists and received a NAPPA Gold Award with the song, Hey, Josie! reaching #1 on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio. The Hipwaders continue to perform for kids and families throughout the United States including Bay Area children s hospitals, pediatric wards, George Mark Children s Hospice, fairs, festivals, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and California s Great America. Their music can be heard on NBC, The History Channel, MTV, Planet Green, TruTV, Current TV, Animal Planet, VH1, Discovery Health, TLC, The Style Network, PBS, Super Station, E!, Women s Entertainment, SiTV, OLN, Bravo, HGTV, CMTV, and the Travel Channel. Once again this year, the Bay Stage will be home to two entertaining competitions: the Talent & Dance Competition on Friday August 3 and the Solano Stars! Vocal Competition on Saturday August 4. Both competitions will be held from 5:00 7:00 p.m. on the Bay Stage with cash prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each competition. The Talent & Dance Competition is open to musical duos, trios, bands, dancers and other entertainers, while the Solano Stars! Vocal Competition is open to individual vocalists only. All contestants must live in Solano County and will be judged on talent, stage presence and entertainment appeal. Registration for both competitions is due by July 27. On the Bay Stage on Saturday August 4, Berkeley natives, Thirstbusters, take the stage to perform their original pop rock hits. Band members Chase Jackson, Forrest Mitchell and Zach Sorgen met in 7 th grade where they performed for the first time with a rendition of Purple Haze for a middle school event. They met their fourth band member, Ryan Thomas, at Bay Stage Entertainment at the 2012 Solano County Fair Page 3

4 Berkeley High and immediately hit it off. One day after Jazz Ensemble they were jamming on some pop, and Chase yells Guys! We re making a band! and the rest is history. They recorded their first album as a one room live recording with no producer or professional guidance and shocked themselves with how well it turned out. After heading off to different colleges in New York, Los Angeles and Ohio, they reunited over winter break and produced a music video, So There, with Zach s sister as writer/director. A couple of weeks after making So There, they got an from Disney that the network wanted to air it for a while. Shortly after that, they got a call from their soon to be managers and put together the rest of their team, made a few more music videos, and had songs featured in a couple of movies. They have just released their second album, are playing shows, writing new songs, and planning another music video. Just one year shy of college graduation, they can t wait to rock out every single day of the year! Also performing on Saturday August 4, six piece cover band Conjure has something for everyone, young and old. The band was formed in Woodland, CA during the 1970's by Felix "The Cat" Vasquez and his brother, Manny. Two original members are still with the band providing a continuity of classic sounds along with new instrumental and vocal stylings. Conjure plays a broad range of favorites including covers of Carlos Santana, Elvis Presley, Jefferson Airplane, Hank Williams, Linda Ronstadt, and The Doobie Brothers. They have performed at several venues around the area including the Dixon May Fair and the UC Davis Walk for Miracles. Sunday night August 5 brings popular Vacaville based band Rick Harris & Silverado to the Bay Stage to perform their crowd pleasing, outlaw style country music. Bandleader Rick Harris has been a charming, graceful and well loved country music gentleman in Northern California for nearly a decade, accompanying his impressive full throated vocals with his acoustic rhythm guitar. 5 singer. Rick employs various local hotshot country sidemen on bass, drums and other instruments to round out his soulful performance. The Solano County Fair runs from August 1 5, 2012 at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo. All entertainment, including concerts, is included FREE with Fair admission. Fair admission prices are $6 in advance and $8 on site for adults, $3 in advance and $4 on site for children ages 6 12 and seniors 60+. Children 5 and under are always FREE. Military personnel and dependents with an active duty card are also always FREE. Select activities, carnival rides and games have a separate cost. Carnival wristbands, good all day any one day, are $20 in advance and $25 on site.
