1 PMMS Mustang News Dr. Jasmine Kullar, Principal March 2, 2018 News from Dr. Kullar Student Walk-Out The safety of our students and employees has always been, and will continue to be, our number one priority. With this in mind, we cannot support or endorse allowing our students, your children, to participate in walking out of school which could place them into a potentially dangerous situation. We want to work with our students to identify an appropriate way to show empathy for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and its community without interruption of instructional time and without violation of district policies. Of course, parents are able to check their student out of school on any school day to leave campus according to policy. Please see our district s full statement through this link: Houston County Schools Visit We were so honored this week as we had a team of principals and central office staff visit our school from Houston County Schools. They toured our school and sat in on teacher collaborative meetings to see the wonderful and great things we are doing here at PMMS. March 5 March 6 March 8 March 9 March 12 March 21 Chorus LGPE (7th and 8th grade) Parent elective night at PMMS 4:30-6pm for rising 9th graders Kennesaw Town Hall Meeting at PMMS 6:30-8:15pm Q&A session for parents of rising 9th graders 8:30-9:15am PMMS media center Orchestra LGPE (7th and 8th) 8th grade band LGPE Reality U Thank you to Ms. Hines and Ms. Roll for coordinating our Reality U field trip to KMHS yesterday. What a great experience for our students hopefully they came home and talked to you about what they learned from this wonderful opportunity. Promotion/Retention Policy As you are aware, the new promotion/retention policy states that one of the three criteria for promotion is that students must demonstrate an appropriate level of reading comprehension as measured by Lexile scores. For the 3rd time this year, students will be participating in a reading assessment in the beginning of May in order to obtain updated Lexile scores. Milestones Prep Our teachers have been working so hard to ensure students are well prepared for the upcoming milestones. We are using our time during 3rd period to offer extra help to all our students. Please talk to you children about the importance of these extra help sessions over the next few weeks. 2 6th Grade Students of the Week Madalyn Owens demonstrates behavior that sets the standard for our class; Madalyn stays focused on the task at hand and uses class time constructively; she always pays attention to detail in daily work. Oscar Garcia-Cortes is a joy to have in class. He is a bright young man who is kind and helpful. He actively participates in class and enjoys learning. 7th Grade Students of the Week Drew Mayrant works hard and always takes the lead with his table group in ensuring they on working towards whatever goal we have in class that day. His leadership, in addition to his work ethic and study habits makes him an excellent role model to his peers. Makenzie Phillips has excellent focus and it pays off majorly in her classwork and with her study habits. Even if material comes easily to her, she still works hard to ensure he has a great understanding of the material. 8th Grade Students of the Week Ashlyn Daniels takes her work seriously and doesn't settle for the minimum required. She strives to excel and uses her potential to succeed and lead her peers. Pidge Ackerman is an amazing student. From being hard-working to being an outspoken and brave student; Pidge is a model student. This week, we would like to highlight Ms. Vanessa Petit. Ms. Petit is one of our 7th/8th grade science teachers. She took the initiative this year and spearheaded the milestones prep academy program during our REACH classes for 5 weeks. This has been the first week of its implementation and it has been working very well so far. I ve heard positive feedback from teachers and students! Thank you Ms. Petit for thinking outside the box and making this happen! We appreciate your leadership!! Jasmine Kullar, Principal

6 Media Center Highlights As one season ends, another one is ready to take its place. Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Terschan had fun watching the kids select books for a blind book date before Valentine s Day. There were approximately 3 dozen students that completed the book challenge by submitting their book summary before the end of February. Most students were pleasantly surprised and loved or at least liked their date. Now it is time for the March Madness Reading Tournament. Students will get a bracket next week to select their favored books. Books were selected based on the most popular books checked out from the media center and favorites read in classrooms across all grade levels. We will start voting for the Sweet Sixteen March 7th.
