2 By Martin Fallon Tennis Tidbits The Bay Forest Book Group Welcome back tennis players, to a facility that withstood Irma and survived, but not before some serious damage took place. The grounds crew have done a great job so far with much work still to come. We will have a tent replacing the tiki hut that blew away, our gathering place different, but no less positive than the enthusiasm tennis always generates. The new Har-Tru material will soon go down and after that play can resume. That process could take a week or more, so please respect the signs admonishing players to stay away until the work is completed. But the old rules still apply. Men wear shirts with short sleeves, no muscle shirts allowed. And shoes must have flat bottoms so as not to destroy the new playing surface. The ladies always seem to choose fashionable gear and get first crack at the round robins, the courts reserved for them M,W,F, mornings, from 8:15-10:30. The men's round robin get access T,TH,SAT, at the same times, Sunday mornings reserved for mixed doubles. After those times the courts are open for play. We will try to have a sign-up board to reserve your court. Players in the morning should be finished, and the courts brushed and lines cleared by 12:00-noon, as the courts are watered then and won't be available again until 2:00 PM, at the earliest, or permanent damage will result. Parents should inform their adolescent children and visitors to avoid wet courts. And younger children must have adult supervision and wear the appropriate flat soled tennis shoes. Future news will include the specifics on all our social gatherings. New players are encouraged to join the women's and men's round robins, and couples on good speaking terms for Sunday morning's mixed doubles. Later, the men will form a traveling team for the winter, Just-For-Fun League. The last reminder is that players MUST brush the courts and clean the lines after finishing play. We don't have staff to do that for us, keeping costs down and dues very low. Grounds crew prepare the courts for morning play, but after that this becomes the players' responsibility. Because of this diligence, and competent grounds crew, visitors always compliment our facility, as "second to none." Going forward, newcomers should feel free to ask questions of the veteran players, as we recover from the violent hurricanes and hope for our best season ever. Marty Fallon The first meeting of the Bay Forest Book Club will be held on Monday Nov. 13 th at 2:00 PM in the clubhouse. We will be discussing "Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf. The Book Club meets on the second Monday of the month at 2:00. All are welcome. Any questions call Pat Wood at No meeting in December. Mah-Jongg lessons will be given in late December or early January, if we have at least 3-5 people interested in learning this ancient Chinese Tile game. Call Jackie at Please leave your name and phone number. To all the returning seasonal residents, Welcome Home. I would like to acknowledge our maintenance crew for all their hard work and effort cleaning up Bay Forest after hurricane Irma. We have discovered some hidden issues that we haven t encountered but in time all this will pass. There is still much more work that needs to be done. We thank you for your patience and to bear with us as it is overwhelming. We are all in this together. Phil Murano Bay Forest Site Manager

5 Calling All Bridge Players The Monday Night Bridge group will be starting on November 13th. The games begin at 7:00 PM at the Clubhouse. It's a lot of fun for players of all levels. Beginning and intermediate players are always welcome. We each contribute $1.00 and then the money is then returned as prizes. We play 3 rounds with 6 hands per round, for a total of 18 hands of bridge. Since we need 4 players per table, please call prior to Monday, so that we can have full tables. Call Maurice Wright at (239) and get in on the action. Bay Forest Office The Bay Forest clubhouse office is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM 3 PM. Phone Fax Presidents Message We survived Hurricane Irma with not so much structural damage, but much landscape damage. The costs of putting Bay Forest back where it was before Irma, as best we can, have been totaled up to $147,500. It could have been much worse! This amount is being invoiced to all the Associations for immediate payment in full in the same proportion as the regular assessments, per our governing documents. It will be between $212 and $290 per unit. You will be invoiced for your share by your own Association. As per FL statute , Loss Assessment coverage is required for at least $2000 in your own condo insurance with no more than a $250 deductible. Check with your agent for details, but all condo owners should have this coverage for both the Bay Forest special assessment and your own Association's special assessment. If you live in an HOA, this statute unfortunately does not apply. Hopefully no one who lives in a condo will be out more than $250. I can't praise Phil, Steven, and our landscaping crew enough for all they have done and are doing to repair the damage. Meanwhile, the grass must still be mowed, and the bushes pruned. Be patient with everything, and be understanding with our dedicated staff. We will get back to normal soon! Bob Wood Bay Forest Board President

6 Fitness HEALTH WELLNESS AND FITNESS FOR FEELING FINE by Bill Mottice As a new season at Bay Forest begins for many of us, let us appreciate what is good here among all the mess that was left by fat old nasty Irma. Lets each of us thank our board, Phil and staff for a great job and hard work. Irma was overweight and left a huge dent in our beautiful community. She was just like many people that are overweight obese or frail or just plain lazy. That group represents over 33% of our older and yes younger population. Highest in the world. Their three R's are restless legs, reflux, and rheumatism which should be changed to the three R's of fitness. they are running, resistance and relaxing the muscles. We all have a way to change this whether we now exercise or not. Lets examine what we are doing, remembering the following four things. 1. Fitness is a life time occupation. 2. It is easy to do too little but hard to do too much. 3. Aerobic activity, and resistance-training, (strength training} are the best medicine available with or without a prescription. 4. Correct nutrition not calories is the most effective way to lose weight as diets are just what they say in the first three letters of that word. A way to start improving is to check our posture. If the back of your hands face forward your shoulders will be rounded and drooping with probable back pain. Stand up straight. ( This posture is sometimes a sign of depression or sadness.) Hands should now have palms facing our sides with the thumb forward. Now lets check our balance, our flexibility, our endurance and our strength. Then take the best medicine available EXERCISE! Do so as if your life depends on it. Because it does!
