4 PAGE 4 South Ormond Neighborhood Park South Ormond Neighborhood Park has begun to slow down a little this week since children are back at school. There are still weekend pavilion rentals with many families gathering together for various celebrations. Free play basketball has begun to pick back up now that the gym is again open to the public at 1:00 p.m. Adult basketball is winding down this weekend. The splash pad is still busy with many visitors each day, despite the early thunderstorms. The Ed Sullivan Show Take a nostalgic step back into television history as Allengang Entertainment, LLC, presents a tribute to the Ed Sullivan Show at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 9 th, at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, 399 N. US Hwy. 1. An amazing special treat awaits you as our very own Linda Cole portrays Pearl Bailey and veteran entertainer George Trullinger plays the role of Ed Sullivan to perfection. A man of many characters, George uses his vocal, guitar, and acting skills to bring to life the music of rock and roll icons Buddy Holly, Mick Jagger, and John Lennon. Ed Sullivan s guests include Buddy Holly, Mick Jagger, Elvis Presley, Pearl Bailey and Juggler Lukas Dudek. Tickets are on sale at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center box office and are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the show. 5 PAGE 5 Ormond Beach Art District Last week members of Ormond MainStreet presented their idea of a new art district downtown at a meeting at The Casements. Several local businesses, artists and residents gathered to discuss the possibilities. One of the main goals is to bring more foot traffic to the downtown area and offer more cultural opportunities to the community at the same time. Ormond MainStreet is currently working to form a committee to help strategize the next steps to make this a reality. For more information, please contact Maggie Sacks at (386) Gymnastics Center Classes The Ormond Beach Gymnastics Center offers classes to boys and girls ages 3 and up, for all levels from beginner to competitive. It also offers cheer classes, and has a competitive cheer team called The Wolves. For information on how to join the tumbling fun for your child, please call the Department of Leisure Services Registration Office at

7 PAGE 7 ICSC Annual Florida Conference Joe Mannarino, Economic Development Director, attended the 2011 International Council of Shopping Centers Annual Florida Conference at the Gaylord Palms Conference Center in Orlando this week. The conference attendees included economic development practitioners from communities throughout Volusia County. Team Volusia EDC sponsored a convention booth for the practitioners to display their available retail and community marketing material. Speakers at the conference included representatives from the retailing, banking, development, site selection and international real estate sectors. The practitioners were able to visit with a host of representatives of various companies and to market the development opportunities in each of the communities and to learn more about the latest tools for tracking and contacting retailers. Although other cities from around Florida had booth displays, Volusia County was the only county-wide booth at the conference. As the representative of the Team Volusia EDC economic development practitioners, Mr. Mannarino has surveyed the other practitioners to determine the level of perceived success and strategies for attending next year s annual ICSC conference. Athletic Fields Maintenance The Athletic Fields Maintenance crew worked this week to prepare Championship Field at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex for Pop Warner Football s opening day this Saturday. This included mowing and painting the field which is done regularly before each game during football season.
8 PAGE 8 Walking with the Manager On Thursday, August 18 th, citizens met at Bailey Riverbridge Gardens on North Beach Street and walked to Wilmette Avenue and then over the bridge with City Manager Joyce Shanahan and City Clerk Joshua Fruecht. During the walk, the group discussed the importance of civic engagement as well as Mr. Fruecht s past experience in local government. Afterwards, the group cooled off by sitting and chatting in the beautiful gardens, for which the City was presented with the Ormond Beach Chamber s beautification award earlier this year. The Walking with the Manager event is held monthly and citizens are invited to join the City Manager and share their thoughts about the City. If you are not able to join this event, you are invited to attend the Meet with the Manager meetings which are held quarterly at City Hall, 22 South Beach Street. The next Meet with the Manager is scheduled for September 12, and the next Walking with the Manager is scheduled for September 15. Please check the City s website at for updates and details on these two events.
