3 3 of 21 4/9/2018, 10:40 AM This year s Easter Chapel offering will support early childhood educa on locally and globally. Locally, we con nue to support Iolani s KA I Keiki Summer Learning Program in Pālolo Valley. This six week program began in the summer of 2015 and provides 40 preschool children from Pālolo Valley Homes with early childhood educa on every summer. Globally, we con nue to support Iolani s Li le Ripples Preschool for Sudanese children growing up in the Goz Amer refugee camp in Chad. By giving these young children the opportunity to go to school during the day, their older siblings are free to a end school and their parents can find work to support their families. Model U.N Conference 'Iolani swept all six awards at last Saturday's Le Jardin Model U.N. Conference. Trinity Meyers '19 won Best Delegate in U.N. Human Rights commi ee and Ma hew Sohn '19 won the research award in that commi ee. Kyung Ju Lee '19 won Best Delegate in U.N. Interna onal Children's Fund commi ee and William Heyler '19 won the research award in that commi ee. Jake Peacock '22 won Best Delegate in U.N. From an Original Oratory about Video Game play to a Program Reading on the themes of Friendship and Helping Others to Impromptu Speeches on topics like rectangles and the single le er R, our kids showed confidence and skill. Out of a field of 158 par cipants from 12 schools, our school placed 1st with the Highest Number of Superior ra ngs with 27 of our students earning medals by garnering 3 or 4 Superior ra ngs. We are also excited to have placed 2nd for the Highest Percentage of Superiors which is very difficult with such a large team. We celebrated their sweeping success at our end of the season luncheon following the tournament. Thank you to our passionate speech team members, their suppor ve parents who served as judges throughout the year, and our dedicated coaches Deb Otsu, Rebus Bonning, Leilani Fortuno, Theresa Falk, and Lisa Tsuruda.
5 5 of 21 4/9/2018, 10:40 AM Li le Ripples Bake & BBQ Sale Student members of the Opera on RAD Club (RAD stands for Raising Awareness for Darfur) held their annual BBQ & Bake sale this week to raise funds for Iolani sli le Ripples Preschool for Darfuri refugee children living in the Goz Amer refugee camp in Chad. Since 2003, the violence in Darfur has le millions displaced. Some 360,000 refugees from Darfur are now living in the refugee camps in Chad. These refugees face shortages of food and clean water, and the average length of stay in the camps is 17 years. Li le Ripples Preschools are providing over 2,000 children (ages 3 5) with an early childhood educa on that supports their social emo onal, cogni ve and physical development through play based learning. To learn more about the program, visit:h ps:// vism.org/impact/li le ripples/ The sale was truly a One Team effort with Kevin Tomisato in the Fair Office providing the grill, the head of school flipping burgers and hot dogs, and Mr. Brown, faculty, staff and students wrapping and preparing the food for sale.

8 8 of 21 4/9/2018, 10:40 AM Their acclaimed film has been shown at film fes vals across the country and is now the first locally produced feature film in almost a decade to screen commercially in theaters across the islands. As the next genera on of filmmakers, students in the class were encouraged to follow their passions, fight hard to bring their dreams to life, and use their crea ve voices to increase the visibility of Hawaii talent. More informa on on the film and screening mes can be found at Hokuloa Singers Last week, Talisman, an a cappella choral group from Stanford University which focuses on non Western music, gave a brief concert in the Chorus Room, a er the Hokuloa Singers shared one of their songs. The group's founder, Joe Pigato, husband of Chaplain Nicole Simopoulos, was in a endance, and the members of Talisman were delighted to meet him. In the photo, members of Talisman are teaching the Hokuloa Singers a Zulu language song from South Africa, complete with choreography. Somehow, our students were able to learn the song in only 10 minutes with choreography taught in four groups simultaneously; they then performed it alongside Talisman to the delight of those in a endance. This week the Hokuloa Singers hosted the Canyon High School Choir from Santa Clarita, California, pictured here warming up. The groups performed for each other, and then created several student led improvisa onal songs together in as many as six parts. Our visitors wrapped up their stay with a brief campus tour. To finish off their week, the Hokuloa Singers performed for the guests at the IHS Women's and Family Shelter (not pictured). Next week the group takes its show on the road to Arcadia Re rement Residence.
