Flying the US Flag While many places fly the American flag, there are eight historic locations that have official proclamations to display the Stars and Stripes 24/7. Celebrate Flag Day on June 14 by learning about some of these sites: White House. Photographs show the flag being flown at the White House as early as the mid-1800s. During World War I, it was customary to display flags on the east and west fronts of the building for 24 hours a day. In 1970, President Richard M. Nixon made it official for one flag to fly above the White House at all times. Washington Monument. The memorial in Washington, D.C., to America s first president has 50 flags, one for each state, encircling the monument. Lexington Battle Green. The first conflict of the American Revolution took place in this Massachusetts town, where the 1775 battlefield has been made into a park. Since 1965, a U.S. flag flies continuously near the site s famed Minute Man statue. U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial. The statue of this memorial in Arlington, Va., is based on the iconic photograph of six soldiers raising the U.S. flag at the Battle of Iwo Jima. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed that the flag atop the 60-foot bronze flagpole be flown 24/7. Neighborhood News Jim provides transportation to appointments (within a 10-mile radius) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are constantly striving to provide consistent care for our residents. ASPARAGUS FACTS FROM BRIAN ROSSO, RD Asparagus is a popular menu item at American House. I hope you enjoy the following facts about this nutritious vegetable! Asparagus is believed to have originated in Greece 2500 years ago. It comes in 3 colors: white (grown underground to avoid sunlight, and very popular in Northwest Europe), green, and purple. It s part of the lily family. It takes 3 years to harvest asparagus for the first time from beginning as a seed. In terms of health, Asparagus acts as a diuretic and a laxative. Michigan ranks 3rd in producing asparagus nationally. Our state produces 25 million pounds of asparagus annually (or a market value of $15 million) on 11,000 acres. Prime growing season is early May to late June. It s 93% water and 5 oz. provides only 20 calories. It is fat-free, has 3 grams of fiber, and is a great source folic acid, potassium, protein, and Vitamins A and C. Visit an American House today and enjoy some asparagus.
6 7 IHR ARTICLE Residents are invited to take part in a special Saturday outing in Oxford, MI. Saturday, June 10, a.m. to 3 p.m. STYLISH IMPRESSIONS This store features fashion accessories and clothing both new and on consignment. A special invitation for the ladies of American House to browse and shop, two of our favorite past times! Afterward, we ll continue our outing next door to Vito s Bakery. Wednesday, June 7th. STONEY CREEK Join in on a ride through Stoney Creek Metro Park. This a cruise only; we ll be back in time for lunch. Thursday, June 22nd, depart right after breakfast. CASINO Sign up for Greektown Casino outing on Friday, June 23. JERRY S CLIP-QUOTES Thoughtful words-for-thought from our resident Jerry Don t tell me. Let me guess how great you are! Don t take today for granted. If you re now on the other side is the grass really greener? God s answers are: YES. NO. Wait a minute. Hugs are better than drugs for stress and pain. It s nice to be important, but it s important to be nice. Incompetence and overconfidence usually exist in the same person. BEAT THE HEAT! Seniors are especially susceptible to heatrelated illnesses, and there are precautions that we can take to minimize our chance of succumbing to heat stress. Helpful tips: Wear light clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen; keep hydrated; avoid alcoholic beverages; eat small meals; be aware of symptoms of heat-related illnesses; and seek treatment promptly. IHR In-Home Rehab Will host an informational talk about staying cool during the upcoming months in the comfort of our air-conditioned lobby! See IHR for info on date and time
