2 Congratulations to Maranda DeBusk! Maranda placed second in the graduate lighting competition for her design for Mr. Burns. Congratulations to Olivia Trees! Olivia won first place in the graduate costume design for her work on A Lesson Before Dying. She also won third place in Costume Crafts for her millinery hats, and The Ready to Work Award. The Ready to Work Award gives her the opportunity work at Triad Stage designing Arthur Miller's The Price. Congratulations to Henry Wilkinson! Henry won third place in the senic design compatition for scenic designs for A Lesson Before Dying. South Pacific Directed by Terry Silver-Alford Previews April 20th and 21st Opening Night April 22nd Playwriting Master Class with Robert Caisley Robert Caisley, playwright of The Open Hand, will be holding a playwriting master class for interested students on Friday, April 1 st from 1pm until 4pm in the LAB Theatre. 3 interested students on Friday, April 1 st from 1pm until 4pm in the LAB Theatre. The class will be called: MISTAKES WERE MADE: Lies, Blunders, Evasions & Other Dramaturgical Sins. According to Rob: In the masters class I discuss the perils of the artistic journey: from the way we cheat as playwrights, to the lies we tell ourselves, and our terrible reluctance/fear of revision. How to break free and do your best work, when the thing that is holding you back is you! I will to talk about all the mistakes I make and all the things I screw up and all the fundamental failures that I pretend aren't really there in my first drafts. So it's basically going to be very humiliating for me... which should be worth the price of admission!!! Rob goes on to recommend that students try to read, or perhaps see a rehearsal of, The Open Hand before the workshop to give a good context for the discussion. About Robert Caisley Robert Caisley is Professor of Theatre & Film, and Head of the Dramatic Writing Program at the University of Idaho. He was named the 2011 Blaine Quarnstrom Visiting Playwright at the University of Southern Mississippi. His latest play Lucky Me has just been optioned by New Jersey Repertory Theatre and Curious Theatre in Denver. His play Happy, presented at the 2011 National New Play Network Annual Showcase of New Plays was a 2012 Finalist for both the prestigious Eugene O Neill Theatre Center s New Play Conference and the Woodward/Newman Award for Drama at Bloomington Playwrights Project, and was selected for a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere in the 2012/2013 season at New Theatre (Miami,FL), Montana Repertory Theatre, 6th Street Playhouse (Santa Rosa, CA) and New Jersey Repertory. There are copies of The Open Hand available for checkout in 206 McClung Tower. Congratulations to Amanda Middleton on her completion of the Young Professionals course on Leadership. Amanda is one of 12 young professionals to complete the 8-week intensive course. The course focused on learning how to set Page 3 of 7

The season will open with Violet, book and lyrics by Brian Crawley, followed by The Crucible by Arthur Miller. This is Our Youth will follow in the Lab Theatre. A new production of A Christmas Carol adapted by Edward Morgan and Joseph Henreddy will end the calendar year. For 2017, CBT will start off with Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley. Then we will see The Busy Body by Susanna Centlivre in the Carousel Theatre, followed by Top Girls by Caryl Churchill in the Lab Theatre. The 2016/2017 Season will end with Around the World in 80 Days adapted by Mark Brown. More details to come! Art by High School Students from Austin-East You may have noticed the art in the Clarence Brown Theatre lobby but did you know that the art was created by the students of Austin-East High School? Students in the advanced art class created the pieces based on a prompt, inspired by A Lesson Before Dying. They have since entered a 2nd piece in response to the play. We are very proud of this community collaboration. Page 5 of 7

6 Undergraduate Celebration! The Undergraduate Celebration will take place Sunday, April 24th from 1:00-3:00pm in the Clarence Brown Theatre Lobby. Join us in celebrating our outstanding undergraduates. CBT Family Feast and A Lesson Before Dying The March 2nd, Family Feast before A Lesson Before Dying was a great success. Forty-one guests attended, many of whom had never been to the CBT. There were also several volunteers from Youth Leadership Knoxville who were there to welcome and direct all of the attendees. Mike Ponder gave a very informative sound design presentation, explaining the creative process behind how he chose some of the songs, a bit of their historical context and how they formed the production and then played clips of each.
