PHYSICAL You and your private, local graphic design business have been called in to re-design Bowie High School logo and appearance. Before you begin to re-design the logo as well as Bowie s mascot overall appearance/image, you want to find out what faculty, administrators and students think or feel about the current logo and the mascot s design and image. What you and your employees plan to do is conduct a comprehensive survey of faculty, administrators and students to see what they feel and think about the current logo and the mascot s appearance and/or image, as well as what they would like to see changed or altered. What kind of survey design will you use for this project (i.e. Likert Scale, mixed method, etc.?)? What kinds of questions will you ask? How will you conduct this survey? 1. What kind of survey design will you use for this project (i.e. Like Scale, mixed method, etc.?)? a. Multiple choice b. Open comment box c. Like Scale d. Online and paper survey i. Possible argument against your solution 1: 1. The survey answers may be too general 2. The students might not understand the number scale 3. The survey may be aimed more towards students then faculty and administration 4. What if people are undecided in how they feel about the questions at hand? ii. Your response: 5. The open box is created so that we can know any additional problems about the survey, the mascot or logo 6. The instructions above the survey clarify how to answer each question 7. The questions written and structured towards the community of Bowie high school 8. Answers such as undecided and strongly agree/disagree make for mixed responses. Answers consisting of a like scale can make for sure answers. 2. What kinds of questions will you ask? How will you conduct this survey? a. The questions would be written in the third person regarding the current and future design of Bowie s mascot and logo

b. The questions would consist of inquiring how the students individually feel about their mascot and logo c. The survey would be disturbed in each students registration package and redisturbed the first week of school during first class period d. The survey will also be online for those students that could not complete the survey and the survey would be online during the registration period e. The survey will also be distributed and optional to the faculty and administration f. The survey will then be analyzed g. The feedback will then be grouped into clusters, in order to know the different kinds of mascot and logo designs and appearances. i. Possible argument against your solution 2 (if necessary): 1. The online survey may not be accessible 2. Some teacher may not take class time to answer the survey 3. There might not be enough responses 4. How would you get students to fill out the surveys 1. Your response: 1. The survey would be an online and paper survey 2. The online survey would be a requirement in order to register 3. The paper survey would be distributed during the 1 st period 4. The survey will also be online for those students, faculty and administrators who could not take the survey 2. Anticipation of events, this includes any possible additional problems that you may encounter, as well as the outcome of events. Risks associated with your proposed solution: i. Students might refuse to take the survey ii. Student might not answer the survey truthfully iii. Students might not see the benefit of the survey or changing the mascot/logo iv. Budget v. How would we go by purchasing ink and paper to print the survey

3. Justification statement, this could include the reasoning or rationale of your solution, as well as your approach or method. EMOTIONAL i. The survey is multiple choice, in order for the students to answer the survey accurately and concisely. The survey is also paper based due to that students might not have access to a computer. The surveys will be printed off school printers. The paper and ink would be bought through office depot for a total of fifty dollars for both ink and paper. The survey is aimed towards students, faculty and administration in order to get an accurate view on how to change the mascot and logo. Once you find out what faculty, administrators and students think about the current logo design and El Paso Bowie s high school mascot s appearance/image, you and your graphic design team goes to work on the redesign of both. You divide your employees into groups of two; each group has four people, eight people total. As their leader and boss, you give them parameters to work within for re-designing the current Bowie logo and their mascot s appearance/image, based on the survey results. You give each team three weeks to develop their ideas and create a presentation on their redesigns. At the end of the three weeks, each team gives their presentations and it is apparent to you and your teams that they have completely different takes on what the two redesigns (of the school s logo and Bowie mascot s appearance/image) should look like. However, both of the teams have similar takes on the redesign of the school s logo specifically that in which the logo now contains a " " addition and both redesigns share a similar font type. One of the teams has accused the other team of stealing their idea for the redesign of the logo. For the mascot s appearance/image redesign, one team took a conservative approach, which consists of a very abstract, simplified version of him. On the other hand, the other team took a more liberal approach to the redesign of the mascot s appearance/image that includes a more graphic design, with intricate details, such as three-dimensional features shading and features. As the leader, how do you go about comprising or negotiating between the two different takes on the school s logo and the mascot s appearance/image? How do you plan to approach the accusation that one of the team's "stole" their idea on the redesign of the school s logo?

1. As the leader, how do you go about comprising or negotiating between the two different takes on the school s mascot appearance/image? a. Let each group pitch their mascot design to the students, faculty and administrators b. During a pep rally assembly display both designs and have the students, faculty and administrators vote though a ballot c. The design with the majority vote has their mascot design become the new mascot for the school i. Possible argument against your solution 1: 1. The school might not like either design 2. The teams might feel that voting process is unfair 3. The two design groups might not want to pitch their logo design ii. Your response: 1. If the school does not like either design, scratch the designs and start from new 2. If the group does not want to pitch there designs, them combine both designs 3. Explain to the teams that the best way for students to vote on each design is for them to see each design and to vote collectively 2. How do you plan to approach the accusation that one of the team's "stole" their idea on the redesign of the school s logo? a. Let each team explain and present their logo design b. Sit both teams down and have them create a new logo together c. Or suggest combining both their designs i. Possible argument against your solution 2 (if necessary): 1. The teams might feel that your overlooking the dispute 2. The teams might feel that both their logos are unique and that they shouldn t combine their logo designs 3. Your response: a. Combine both groups and have them re-design the logo b. Or have the students, faculty and administrators choose from the two designs through a ballot

3. Anticipation of events, this includes any possible additional problems that you may encounter, as well as the outcome of events. Risks associated with your proposed solution: a. The groups might feel emotional conflicted regarding plagiarism b. There might be group tension c. The group might not want to settle on a design 4. Justification statement, this could include the reasoning or rationale of your solution, as well as your approach or method a. Giving both groups the option of re-design, combining logo, or pitching their ideas gives the group more options on their logo and mascot design. Also having each teams explain and present their logo design to the other team can help resolve any conflicts, CIRCUMSTANTIAL Once you and your team have decided on a redesign of Bowie s logo and it s mascot s new appearance/image, you present the designs to the administrators, faculty and students. The response to your proposed redesign of the high school s logo and the mascot s new appearance/image is positive. However, the University of California at Berkeley was informed by one of their students who attended Bowie High School, that there might be some copyright infringement on their logo. The University of California at Berkeley goes forward and sues Bowie high school on copyright infringement. Do you go head and change the complete appearance of the logo again, which administrators, faculty and students reacted so positively too or do you keep the design? How will you go about settling the dispute with the University of California at Berkeley? 1. Do you go head and change the complete appearance of the logo, which administrators, faculty and students reacted so positively too or do you keep the design? a. The design of the logo would be kept the same b. The design of the old and new logo would not be copyrighted due to that this project is high school based and does not conflict with the college s appearance c. Also other middle, high and elementary schools share logos and mascots i. Possible argument against your solution 1: i. Berkeley might feel that Bowie s new and old logo appearance is based and referenced from their logo

ii. Berkeley might feel that you should change the mascot even though the mascot is not college related ii. Your response: 1. Well first the school would ask the students and faculty how they would feel about changing the whole appearance of their new and old logo 2. The teams would suggest the school try to stray way from Berkeley s logo design 3. If the students and faculty feel strongly about their logo, then the school would go forward with the design 2. How will you go about settling the dispute with the University of California at Berkeley? A. The design team would first suggest a meeting where Bowie and Berkley can settle the dispute without the law interfering B. The design team would see if they can change the logo and explain that the team is trying to re-design the logo C. Explain that the logo is a high school logo and not a college logo, so there is no interference about having the schools look alike. i. Possible argument against your solution 2 (if necessary): a. Berkeley might feel that you are overlooking the fact that the school plagiarized their logo b. They might feel that the school should change their logo completely 1. Your response: a. The school would then explain that they could re-design the logo according to the students and faculty b. Explain that the school is not overlooking the dispute and are only trying to find a way of settling the dispute without the law. 3. Anticipation of events, this includes any possible additional problems that you may encounter, as well as the outcome of events. Risks associated with your proposed solution: a. Berkeley might still want to sue Bowie High School under principle b. The school might feel it is too much trouble to re-design the logo 4. Justification statement, this could include the reasoning or rationale of your solution, as well as your approach or method

a. The reason the design team would settle the dispute through a meeting is so that the dispute can be civil. Also the school doesn t want to go to court over a minor dispute. Also by suggesting changing the logo, it shows that the school can compromise.
