2 P A G E 2 ERAU Conducts Noise Abatement Workshop Pilots from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University met with City staff and the members of the Aircraft Noise Abatement Task Force on Tuesday, July 14 th, to conduct a workshop designed to test noise abatement procedures proposed for use at the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport. Dr. Frank Ayers, Chairman of the Flight Training Department at ERAU, offered a presentation on the procedures to be tested. A single-engine aircraft and a twin-engine aircraft were flown from the ERAU campus in Daytona Beach to the airport in Ormond Beach, to be used as test aircraft for the workshop. Use of these aircraft for the workshop was donated to the City by the university. Upon completion of the workshop presentation, the members of the Aircraft Noise Abatement Task Force adjourned to locations in the communities near the airport, in order to assess how the test procedures would affect the perceived noise impact of aircraft operations to those on the ground. One member of the task force was aboard each aircraft to observe the procedure tests from the air. Dr. Ayers and two members of his staff observed the tests from the air traffic control tower, with flight operations under the supervision of two air traffic controllers. The results of the workshop were discussed at the next meeting of the Aircraft Noise Abatement Task Force, which was held on Thursday, July 16 th. Architect for the MAC Charter project was BPF Design Incorporated, civil engineers Parker Mynchenberg & Associates and the general contractor was J.H. Merrell Construction.

Yonge Street. The first units arrived at 6:17 PM. Smoke was rolling from the entire structure with flames from the northeast side of the house. Access was difficult since responders were initially only able to get to the northeast and west sides of the house. The occupant escaped the home and was assisted by firefighters. She told the firefighters she was the only one inside the home but had left behind several animals. The initial fire fighting crew attacked the fire while the next group of firefighters rescued several birds and a dog. One bird did not survive likely due to smoke inhalation. The occupant was transported to Memorial Hospital, the birds were turned over to a neighbor who runs a bird sanctuary and the dog was turned over to the Ormond Beach Police Department (OBPD). Ormond Beach Fire was assisted by OBPD, Volusia County Fire Services, Holly Hill Fire and EVAC. Damage to the home and contents was estimated at $60,000. Memorial Hospital staff contacted social service agencies to assist the woman since her home sustained significant damage and is not habitable. The cause of the fire is undetermined based on the investigation by the State Fire Marshall s Office. 4 P A G E 4 Campers Juggle in the Fun The Perf o r m i n g Arts Center hosted the second of three summer camp shows on Thursday, July 16 th. Master Juggler Brian Pollock graced the stage to an audience from three different summer camp programs. Brian spent the morning wowing over 100 campers and counselors with amazing feats of juggling, balancing acts, comedy and much more! Just as many artists work in oils, clay or bronze, this artist works in gravity. Gales of laughter ensued during the 45-minute performance which combined comedy patter, audience participation, h a n d - s t a n d artistry and the juggling of a variety of objects on a bongo b o a r d. Throw in a little magic and a few surprises and you h a v e Gravinipulation! The next summer camp show is the Children s Musical Theatre Workshop summer camp show on July 30 th at 7 p.m. Tickets are only $5.00. Sea What's Happening at Camp T. Rec Camp T. Rec is a big hit for several area children with special needs. The theme at Camp T. Rec last week was "Sea Life". The campers enjoyed making arts and crafts projects that f o c u s e d on marine life and the ocean. Michael Brothers from the Marine Science Center visited on Wednesday and taught the campers about predators of the sea. On Tuesday they went to the YMCA pool. On Thursday the campers enjoyed a field trip to Central Park to have snacks, go on a scavenger hunt and compete in field games. The abilities of the special needs participants were showcased during all the competitions. On Friday they enjoyed cooling off at the splash pad at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center. It is clear that Camp T. Rec is the high point of the summer for the special needs campers! They get to meet new friends and engage in a variety of activities they otherwise may not have been able to enjoy this summer.

5 P A G E 5 Upcoming Community Events Community Events is honored to assist with approximately 50 events each year. Coming up is National Night Out on August 4 th from 5:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Members of the Ormond Beach Police Department sponsor this event each year which focuses on teaching citizens crime awareness and crime prevention. On August 22 nd from 4:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Community Events staff will assist with the Caribbean Night event featuring lots of good Caribbean music, incredible W E E K L Y R E V I E W BCU s Coach Reed Visits South Ormond Although it is summer, the business of basketball never ends at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center. We still work out our players four times a week. We also bring in guest speakers and coaches to give skill sessions, island food and the island market. Caribbean Night will take place in the newly renovated Rockefeller Gardens. Each of the City employees who worked together on the July 4 th Celebration was extremely pleased to see the tremendous crowds that gathered for the event. It made their jobs that much more fulfilling. Please take the time to fill out a short 4 th of July survey online at and let us know how we did. Click on the Upcoming Events tab to the right. To find out about other upcoming community events, you can always call the Community Events office at motivational speeches and testimonials to the kids. Clifford Reed, the head coach of Bethune Cookman University, stopped in to lead drills and speak to the players about the business end of basketball and what characteristics he, as a Division 1 coach, looks for in a player. Some of the things he stressed upon were academics, character and work ethic as the major points of emphasis he looks for when recruiting players. He also talked about the importance of clean, drug-free living.

6 P A G E 6 Nova Day Camp Celebration The Nova Community Center Summer Connection Day Camp ended the first four-week session with two days of celebration last week. On Thursday, the campers performed their talent show. Parents and campers enjoyed watching as many of the campers sang, danced, performed magic tricks, presented martial arts skills, played musical instruments, walked on stilts, acted out skits and performed with a hula hoop. On Friday, the c a m p e r s dodged the rain to play on two water inflatables that were set up between the Nova ball fields. The enjoyment was evident through the smiles and e n t h u s i - asm. Session two runs from July 13th through August 7th. Space is still available. Please contact the Leisure Services Office at to reserve your child s spot today! PAC Campers Prepare for The King & I! The Performing Arts Center began theater summer camp this week. This years presentation will be the Broadway production of The King and I. Thirty children ages 8 to 16 registered for the second annual theatre summer camp held at the PAC. The City has once again partnered with the area s long time children s theatre professionals, the Children s Musical Theatre Workshop, to produce three weeks of fun and exciting theatre activities culminating with a first-class production of The King & I. Campers spent their first week auditioning for lead roles and learning the first level choreography.

7 P A G E 7 Enviro Camp Begins! This week started the 4 th Annual Enviro Camp program for The Casements! The program this year is taking place in the cafeteria of Osceola Elementary School Monday through Thursday. We are excited about partnering with Osceola Elementary and appreciate their hospitality for the five-week program. This week s theme is Don t Bug Me! an exploration of good bugs versus bad bugs! We will learn all about ladybugs, their life cycle and several interesting and funny facts about them. We will even attempt to hatch our very own ladybugs! Our friends and master gardeners from The University of Florida visited to teach the campers about planting, and assisted each one with planting their very own pumpkin! These small biodegradable pots can be transplanted right into their gardens at home and in just 90 days will produce a pumpkin large enough to carve for Halloween! Taking a look at our environment, we visited the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens and toured the native plants and animals with gardener, Janett VanWicklen. Several items that we made throughout the week of camp included painted lady bug rocks, funny faced grass head planters, making our own visors, terra cotta butterfly fountains and several other bug inspired crafts. The week went fast, and we all look forward to week two, Paint it Green! For availability and registration information, call the Casements Preparing for Soccer Season! The Athletic Field Maintenance staff has been busy getting the soccer fields at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex ready for the start of the fall soccer season which is set to begin in August. Tasks included aerating and top dressing the fields. Last year over 1,000 boys and girls ages 4-17 participated in the Ormond Beach Youth Soccer Association s program. W E E K L Y R E V I E W

PAC Senior Performers Featured in Pilot TV Show! Members of the Ormond Beach Follies were asked to act in a pilot food service program about wineries and cocktails. The producers of the show approached the group in need of two outstanding performers to aide in a commercial to be sold to the Food Network. Dan Spellacy and Pam Connor were selected to star in the commercial as the Queen Mum and he as the loyal butler James. The skit is portraying the Queen Mum waiting for her evening drink, when her loyal servant James brings her a premade cocktail. The producers are planning to pitch the program to the executives at the Food Network as a new format comedy/ food show.
