Flyway Chapter, April Chapter Mtg Presentation By: Pete Vercouteron April Chapter Mtg Presentation (Cont.) /2 N Pioneer Road Fond du Lac, WI President: Keith Lee keleeke@charter.net Vice President: Mike Stopar snopie@charter.net Treasurer: John Zorn jzorn1@gmail.com Secretary/ Newsletter Ed. Dick Finn rfinn5@hotmail.com Program Chairman: Jim O Connor jimpoc@gmail.com Pete Vercouteren vpete101@aol.com Young Eagle Coordinator: Chuck Pazdziock (815) Funflyin@gmail.com Newsletter Submissions: Please to rfinn5@hotmail.com We have a speaker lined up for the April 3 meeting. He is Fred Stadler from Oshkosh. Fred is a co-chairman for parking in the "North Forty" at AirVenture. The topic for Fred s presentation will be If Airplanes Could Talk... Learning the History of Your Own Airplane He retired from IBM and now flies antique biplanes at Pioneer Airport. In addition, he writes the NOTAM's each year for AirVenture. Fred is a CFI, an A&P-AI. Fred Stadler is a volunteer pilot at EAA s Pioneer Airport who achieved an unprecedented milestone on July 1, 2015 by logging his 6,000th Young Eagle flown the most ever by an individual pilot. Stadler, EAA 37882, made the flight at Pioneer in EAA s Young Eagles GlaStar N231YE. When: April 3, 2017 Dinner: 6:00 pm Topic: Next Meeting Fred Stadler If Airplanes Could Talk... Learning the History of Your Own Airplane Meeting: 7:00 pm Where: Fond du Lac Skyport Terminal Building Make sure to come early for dinner. This month we will be ordering in Pizza from Jett s Pizza. Fred knew that No. 6,000 was approaching just by looking at his logbook. So that s when he stopped paying attention to the numbers so as not to position one kid s flight as more important than another s. I do everything I can to make the kids feel they re in control, from the moment they climb into the cockpit, he said. It s hugely rewarding to fly Young Eagles, and I would encourage folks to come out and fly some kids it s always exciting. And if you re flying 10 kids, why not 20? Incidentally, the child who represented No. 6,000 was Elias Adrian, of Watertown, Wisconsin. Stadler only learned that when Young Eagles Manager Brian O Lena told him a week after it occurred. 2 The Presidents Corner By: Keith Lee FOND DU LAC EAA CHAPTER 572 What s new and interesting in aviation today? Always something way out there of course! A company in China has announced production of a one man Drone at CES Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The EHANG 184, capable of up to 60 mph carrying a 220 pound load for a max of 28 minutes. It comes with a reading light an air conditioner and can be recharged fully in two hours. It is designed to travel 1,000ft to 1.650ft off the ground with a max altitude of 11,500ft. The company has raised over 42 million in capitol so far. They hope to sell it between $200,000 and $300,000 and realize they face a lot of hurdles. There are no operational controls for the rider. It is controlled by tablet. Not sure I want to be a first rider. But I would be willing to try it eventually after bugs are worked out. Check out the video at the link below! A quick reminder for our neighboring chapter in West Bend and their Navigation Mission Challenge coming up Saturday May 13 with a rain date of May 20th. Looks to be lots of fun. They might still have room for volunteers. I am sure Chuck will have lots to say about our upcoming big event and joint collaboration with the Skyport for an Open House and Young Eagle Rally. I am asking for all of us to sign up on line and attend and support this fun event! We have a lot of folks involved, other clubs/ groups and are getting the word out. We expect a huge turnout. At least we should plan for a huge turnout. Bring your spouse or other family members out to help! My wife, Holly and I will be there. Lunch provided for our volunteers. Thanks, Keith Lee March Meeting By John Zorn Our attendance at the March Meeting was somewhat less than stellar with only ten members attending. I guess this is probably due to people taking off for mid-winter holidays. Many thanks to Pete Vercouteron who provided a taco bar with two kinds of meat, beans, taco chips and salsa and cookies. Those of us who missed the meeting missed a good meal. The program was John Dorsey about the Wisconsin Aviation Heritage Museum and its new inductees. Those of you who wixh to support the museum can contact them at: Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame 3980 Sharratt Drive Oshkosh, WI info@wisconsinaviationhalloffame.org We also had a $ donation to our 501c3 organization for the playground project. We will compile a listing and those that donated money will be recognized at a later date. Page 2 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter April, 2017
Dennis s and Keith s latest big adventure! By Keith Lee Just a few sentences on our most current B-17 tour! My (Keith) tour started March 1st and lasted until March 20th. Dennis joined me in Concord California on March 6th after he completed prior commitments. I started in Long Beach California. I flew into the Long Beach airport instead of the LAX monster. I found it to be a really nice airport and experience. They walk you through open air space to pick up your luggage with palm trees and plenty of sunshine. We stayed in a high rise Hotel, very nice accommodations, and extremely busy. This was my second tour this year. Turned out to be pretty slow. Usually we have two coordinators on each trip but had difficulty getting someone else to go so I said yes, I would do it alone. Our group of 6 still had lots of fun. Each night we try to find a new place to dine out. My favorite was down by the Marina watching the boats and people. March 6th Dennis flew into Long Beach about noon, we picked up one of the trucks and trailers, and relocated it to Concord Ca. Spent the night Monday, both of us flew back to Long Beach Tuesday to relocate the other trailer. The Concord Tour was pretty busy with lots of rides and lots of merchandise sold. Our next relocation was the following week to Vacaville California. Seemed like a smaller airport but was very nice with a great local chapter to work with. We had a full schedule of riders all 3 days. Dennis relocated both trailers to Napa on Sunday for special Pilot Training the following week. Hope I don t bore you with this rambling but we always have lots of fun on these trips. Thanks, Keith Lee Page 3 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter April, 2017
Young Eagles Web Site Content Many thanks to Chuck Pazdzioch for taking such a strong lead on the Chapters Young Eagles program. Chuck has written the following article to be placed on our Chapter web site. Great Job!!! - Young Eagles is a program offered by the EAA to introduce young people to aviation. What better way to discover the joys of flying than to actually go for a free ride in a plane!! What will your flight be like? After you complete the registration form and your parent/guardian signs it, your pilot will explain what will happen during the flight. This might include talking about the airplane, completing a careful preflight inspection of the airplane and identifying the parts that control the airplane and how they work. Once you are ready to go flying, your pilot will help you buckle your seatbelt and describe the interior of the airplane, including the instrument panel. Then its time to go flying!! Young Eagles flights usually last about 15 minutes. Before, during and after the flight, there will be time to ask any questions you may have about the flight and the airplane. After the flight, your pilot will present you with a Young Eagles logbook, where you can keep track of all the flights you go on (yes, you can come back as many times as you like). In addition to the flight, you will receive: 1) Free student membership to the EAA, including e-newsletters and electronic copies of EAA Sport Aviation magazine, 2) Free membership in the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). 3) FREE access to Sporty's Complete Flight Training Course, a ground school to prep you for flight training ($215 value). 4) After completing the Sporty's course you will earn a FREE first flight lesson 5) Access for the many EAA-sponsored scholarships you can use for flight training or your college education. Our chapter holds Young Eagles Rally events at various times during the year. Check our website for details. We can also arrange a rally just for your youth group or organization. Just contact our Young Eagles Coordinator Chuck Pazdzioch at Funflyin@gmail.com For all things Young Eagles, check out the National Young Eagles website at Page 4 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter April, 2017
Young Eagles and Skyport Open House By Chuck Pazdzioch Hello EAA Chapter 572 Members, As many of you know, the chapter is hosting not only another Young Eagle rally but also this year the airport is participating with an Open House. This all happens on Saturday May 6th from 8:00-12:00 noon. This year's event will also include four outside organizations; Civil Air Patrol, The Commemorative Air Force WI Wing Oshkosh Veteran's Military Museum. and the Fond du Lac R/C Model airplane club. Each will have a booth to promote their organization while promoting aviation and the military. As we work towards growing and building the chapter many of us believe it's important to partner with these organizations to provide added value to the event and hopefully to the community. As in the past the Civil Air Patrol cadets will provide much needed traffic management to keep our event safe and help out where needed. The Commemorative Air Force will be flying in two of their planes for static display; the SNJ-5 and PT-26. They have committed to the May 6th and have offered to help us make this an annual event. The Oshkosh Veterans Military Museum will be providing some military vehicles and hardware. The Fond du Lac Aero Club will be setting up an R/C flight simulator to go along with my full scale flight sim. Along with coloring books for the pre-young eagles, there will be plenty for people to see and do. In order to be successful, we need your help. Either in the air or on the ground. If you can out before, during or after the event, great. Lunch will be provided. I would like to try something a little different this year and use some technology to help track the volunteers and hopefully make things a bit easier. I have created an online volunteer website. It's located at: There are two types of positions to volunteer for, Pilot and Ground Crew. Just click on the link, choose the position you want to volunteer for and enter your name and address. Your name will be posted but your will not. If you have any questions or would still prefer to contact me directly, just Chuck at Funflyin@gmail.com or Sometime in early April I need to form a small team of people to hang flyers at every business along Johnson St. We have flyers going out to several organizations including The Boys and Girls Club, St. Peters school, Wisconsin Lutheran Academy and other schools and library's in the Fond du Lac and Campbellsport areas. If you would like some flyers to place in your areas please let me know. We had a very good turn out last September and we're looking for an even bigger one in May. We're hoping that this event will grow to a full blown annual fly in emphasizing aviation education but we're taking baby steps. I'm looking forward to working with you so don't delay...sign up. Thanx, -Chuck Page 5 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter April, 2017
Compliments of Dean Zakos FOND DU LAC EAA CHAPTER 572 This came from a gentleman who runs a 2,000-acre corn farm up around Barron, WI, not far from Oshkosh. He used to fly F-4E s & F-16 s for the Guard and participated in the first Gulf War. His story: I went out to plant corn for a bit, to finish a field before tomorrow morning and witnessed 'The Great Battle'. A golden eagle -- big, with about a six-foot wingspan - flew right in front of the tractor. It was being chased by three crows that were continually dive bombing it and pecking at it. The crows do this because the eagles rob their nests when they find them. At any rate, the eagle banked hard right in one evasive maneuver, then landed in the field about 100 feet from the tractor. This eagle stood about 3 feet tall. The crows all landed too and took up positions around the eagle at 120 degrees apart, but kept their distance at about 20 feet from the big bird. The eagle would take a couple steps towards one of the crows and they'd hop backwards and forward to keep their distance. Then the reinforcement showed up. I happened to spot the eagle's mate hurtling down out of the sky at what appeared to be approximately Mach 1.5. Just before impact, the eagle on the ground took flight, (obviously a coordinated tactic; probably pre-briefed) and the three crows that were watching the grounded eagle also took flight -- thinking they were going to get in some more pecking on the big bird. The first crow being targeted by the diving eagle never stood a snowball's chance in hell. There was a mid-air explosion of black feathers, and that crow was done. The diving eagle then banked hard left in what had to be a 9G climbing turn, using the energy it had accumulated in the dive, and hit crow #2 less than two seconds later. Another crow dead. The grounded eagle, which was now airborne and had an altitude advantage on the remaining crow that was streaking eastward in full burner, made a short dive, then banked hard right when the escaping crow tried to evade the hit. It didn't work - crow #3 bit the dust at about 20 feet AGL. This aerial battle was better than any air show I've been to, including the War Birds show at Oshkosh. The two eagles ripped the crows apart, and ate them on the ground; and, as I got closer and closer working my way across the field, I passed within 20 feet of one of them as it ate its catch. It stopped and looked at me as I went by, and you could see in the look of that bird that it knew who's Boss of the Sky. What a beautiful bird! I loved it. Not only did they kill their enemy, they ate them. One of the best Fighter Pilot stories I've seen in a long time. Page 6 EAA Chapter 572 Newsletter April, 2017
Interesting Stuff on the Web: Thanks to Keith Lee for the following link is to an interview with John Bode, one of the EAA B17 pilots very Interesting! The following comes from Dean Zakos: Here's a sad sea burial you may or may not have read about. Loyce Edward Deen, an Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class, USNR, was a gunner on a TBM Avenger. On November 5, 1944, Deen's squadron participated in a raid on Manila where his plane was hit multiple times by anti-aircraft fire while attacking a Japanese cruiser. Deen was killed. The Avenger's pilot, Lt Robert Cosgrove, managed to return to his carrier, the USS Essex. Both Deen and the plane had been shot up so badly that it was decided to leave him in it. It is the only time in U.S. Navy history (and probably U.S. military history) that an aviator was buried in his aircraft after being killed in action. COOL STUFF Also from Dean Zakos: Amazing how WW II stories continue to surface after all these years. I never heard of this woman or knew of all female Russian fighter squadrons (I know about the "night witches", another fascinating story!) Aviation Quotes: I was always afraid of dying. Always. It was my fear that made me learn everything I could about my airplane and my emergency equipment, and kept me flying respectful of my machine and always alert in the cockpit. - An airplane will probably fly a little bit overgross but it sure won't fly without fuel.
