1 Big Bend Community College; 7662 Chanute Street N.E. Moses Lake, WA January 1, 2016 New Year, New Team We are excited to announce that the Lady Viking Softball team now has 12 rostered ladies on it. Our team is a tight knit group and looking good for the 2016 season. The ladies push each other and keep each other positive; it is impressive to see their skills piggy back off of each other. We hope to see some of you at our games this season! Go Vikes! Vikes View We go to classes Monday through Thursday and we are all done with classes by at least 3 in the afternoon. We can t go past 3 because we have afternoon workouts and once we get outside we have practice at about 3:30 or 4. Monday and Wednesday our afternoon workouts are split into 2 groups since we do workout videos in the classroom, and Tuesdays and Thursdays are down in the gym because they are cross fit and sprinting days to work on our endurance/ speed. Every morning we get up for a 6:30 am group lifting session and on Fridays we have 9 am hitting and fielding gym sessions followed by our lifting program. On January 18th we will start indoor practices which are from 7:30 pm to about 9:00 pm or so. I get up at 5:40 am for our lifting and then leave the gym around 7:15 or so and return to my dorm. This quarter I have 2 on campus classes; Organic Chemistry and Anatomy 1; at 9:15 am and 1 pm. I also have 2 online classes, Psychology 200 and Ethics. Between my on campus classes I will either go the library or back to my room and work on homework, watch a lecture for my online classes or work for coach. My last class gets done at 3 so I pretty much go straight to afternoon workouts. A lot of the time I will go from workouts to the library and work on homework or work for coach (updating or Facebook page, updating our website or writing the newsletters). Also, as team captain this year I have more responsibilities with the team and talking to coach. I will spend time during the day or on the weekend making up some off season workouts that we will have to do that week; as well as talking to coach about every day about what is going on. I send out group messages to all the girls and make sure information is up to date and everyone is aware of the information no matter how small it is. -Autumn Rollins

2 Player Spotlight Mariah Anaya Olivia Harrison Darlene Anaya #2 #18 #19 The BBCC Lady Vikes would like to welcome Mariah Anaya to the team. Mariah arrived on January 7, 2016 from Phoenix, Arizona. Mariah is a freshman and plays middle infield and outfield. Mariah s goal is to accomplish every task at hand this year and to major in animal science. When she is not on the field, Mariah enjoys hiking, being outdoors and hanging out with her friends and family. The decision to come to BBCC came to Mariah when she decided that she wanted a new experience and a chance to continue playing ball. We are glad to have her and hope she finds everything she is looking for here at BBCC. The Softball Lady Vikings are pleased to welcome back sophomore Olivia Harrison. Olivia splits time pitching and playing first base. After graduating from BBCC with her transfer degree, Olivia is hoping to go Idaho State University. Olivia is from Fish Haven, Idaho and is the daughter of the Vikes assistant coach Al Harrison. One of her favorite quotes is Risk it to get the biscuit. When Olivia is not on the field she enjoys being outdoors, working with her hands, and hanging out with friends/family. We are excited she is back and look forward to seeing her thrive in the circle. The BBCC Lady Vikes would also like to welcome Darlene Anaya. Darlene arrived with her younger sister Mariah on January 7, Darlene is also a freshman; and plays catcher and outfield. Her favorite quote is It gives us girls a chance to show the boys how it s REALLY done. Darlene is hoping to major in marine biology after getting her transfer degree from BBCC, as well as receiving a 3.0 GPA this quarter. Darlene transferred to BBCC from Gateway Community College in Arizona. Darlene came to BBCC for a new experience and a change of scenery. When she is not found on a softball field, she enjoys dancing and reading. Welcome Darlene to the BBCC Softball family.

3 BBCC Clinics The Vikings are holding clinics for young softball players this month. We are hoping to show the girls drills and perfecting skills. Every young softball player deserves a chance to hang out with a college softball player and hopefully find one to look up to. All of our ladies have been in these girls shoes and remember our role models to this day. Our clinics will be held: January 16 (pitchers/catchers) 8:30 3:00 January 23 (pitchers/ catchers) 8:30 3:00 January 30 (all positions) 8:30 3:00 February 6 (all positions) 8:30 3:00 Viking Visits Due to NWAACC regulations and rules, you can stay overnight if you come for a visit, but we can only have care custody and control for 24 hours. Due to this rule we usually bring you in at noon or 1 pm and have you on the road the next day at the same time, noon or 1 pm. Visits can be made at any time but it is more beneficial for you to visit on at least one weekday so you can participate in one of our practices. One question we get a lot is: Do I have to be a senior to visit? NO! In fact, we have many juniors and sophomores also visiting our school. For more information visit our softball page on our Big Bend website under >student life >athletics. Ray Moffitt Office: raym@bigbend.edu January 11, 2016 MARKS THE FIRST DAY TO SCHEDULE VISITS!!!!!

4 Message from Coach Ray It s the start of winter quarter and the world starts spinning around here. The team is back, morning workouts start up, and planning for indoor practices which are only a few days away. This is also that time of year when the Letters of Intent start going out to our prospects and the signings that go with them. It is also a little like Christmas as the new stocks of shoes, jackets, and equipment start rolling into my office. It looks like a little more winter than usual this year since we have had more snow than previous years. We will probably be indoors until the second week of February this season. Thankfully the office staff is back at work and we can get back to filling up the wall with new the player profiles of hopefuls that may turn out to be some of our future players. It is also the time that recruits start visits again. The players who work in my office deserve most of the credit for keeping our system working. Keeping up with the wall, Facebook, the newsletter, and all the busy work that goes on around here has been a yeoman task for Autumn and the rest of the staff. I did notice that she didn t mention Office Manager in her front page article. Ray Moffitt Winter Quarter Begins January 4, 2016 marks the first day of winter quarter. All of our girls have made it back to Moses Lake safely with little to no bumps and delays. Unfortunately, we are all already feeling the stress of the homework and time crunches upon us; but hey we are college athletes and signed up for this torture. We wish everyone else the best of luck going into their quarter, semester and into the year 2016 as a whole! Vikings Notes We have a new updated Facebook Page. Check it out at BBCC Softball Our season schedule is now posted on our Facebook page and our college website Our roster is now updated and posted on our Big Bend college website Ray Moffitt- Head Softball Coach Allen Harrison- Assistant Softball Coach Autumn Rollins- Newsletter Editor
