Letter from the Directors We are so excited for you to join the Siegel Band Family next year! This will be the 15 th Siegel Band since the school opened in 2003 (#Siegelband15). Each band is unique and we can t wait to see what we can accomplish while creating lifelong memories together! The purpose of this handbook is to inform and educate the Siegel High School Band students and their parents of the educational opportunities, as well as the responsibilities and expectations, which are required of each band member in order for them to be a member of this organization. This band program offers students many ways to grow academically, emotionally, physically, and socially. A great motivator, Vince Lombardi once said, The quality of a person s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence. We strive to teach and incorporate Mr. Lombardi s statement into all of our students. It is our hope that our students will learn to strive for and possess a desire for excellence in everything that they do. Throughout the school year we as band directors will seek high standards to obtain the best educational success for our students. We look forward to working with all students and parents in building on the extraordinary educational organization that we have here at Siegel High School. Director of Bands Mr. Alex White whiteal@rcschools.net Assistant Director of Bands Mr. Alex Sears searsa@rcschools.net Band Room Phone: (615) Jazz Lab Band Class 7 th Period The Siegel Band offers the Jazz Lab Band Class that will enhance student learning through jazz band performances, jazz improvisation, jazz theory, jazz history, and small combo playing. 3 Band Membership Requirements To be a member of the Siegel Band, the student and parent: Must agree to and comply with the terms of this handbook. Must complete and turn in the Band Membership Agreement and deposit by the required due date. Must complete and turn in the Band Financial Agreement by the required due date. Must complete and turn in the Travel Permission and *notarized Medical Form by the required due date. Must be enrolled in the proper band period class. Must comply with all rules and regulations for the organization and school. Must attend ALL practices, performances and other required functions. Doctor s note required for illness. Must remain in good standing in the rest of the school. You must stay out of trouble, both from an academic standpoint and from a disciplinary standpoint. Illegal drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited. Students caught with any banned materials or substances will be turned in to the school administration. Marching Band The Siegel Marching Band performs at all of the home football games, most away football games, parades, contests, and other various performance opportunities. In order to prepare properly for the marching season all band members are required to attend band camp during July and August (see calendar). After camp we will have regular practices throughout the fall. Refer to the complete printed schedule for specific dates and times. Please schedule vacations and all other appointments around these required camps and rehearsals. Students are expected to be present at all practices, performances and functions. We intentionally set the rehearsal schedule well in advance, allowing students to plan any other obligations around this schedule. All work schedules must be set around band practices & performances. Work is not an excusable reason for being absent. This is true for dental and orthodontist appointments as well. Unless there is an emergency please schedule medical appointments on days that we do not practice. Always arrive early. It is essential that we make efficient use of the time we have. The band member that misses rehearsal cannot improve, and the other band members around him/her have a less effective rehearsal due to the absence. Absences directly affect other band members ability to practice. Early is on-time, On-time is late. Rehearsals are never canceled due to inclement weather. We will not usually rehearse outdoors in the rain, unless it is light or intermittent rain. In the event of steady rain, we

will rehearse indoors and go out at the first opportunity. Students should dress for the weather and always wear appropriate rehearsal attire. Students must wear low top tennis shoes and socks for rehearsals. This is important in that the style of marching step we use requires that the foot and ankle be permitted to move freely. It is required that all students bring a large cooler filled with water or sports-aid drink to all marching band practices. Hats, sunglasses, sun block and towels are permitted and highly encouraged. Directors should be given a minimum of 24-hour notice if a student is going to be absent from a rehearsal or performance unless due to (a) sudden illness, (b) death in the family, (c) an emergency, or (d) special permission of the band directors obtained in advance by the parent or guardian. A doctor s note is required for an absence due to illness. Absences for ANY reason may result in the student being placed on alternate status, grade reduction, or being dismissed from the band. Students who turn in forms late, miss rehearsal, struggle with music or marching, fail to complete assignments, or do not live up to the expectations set forth in this handbook may be placed on alternate status. Alternates still rehearse in class and after school, perform the pregame show, play in the stands, perform at football games, and travel with the band, but will not perform a marching position in competitive performances. The band staff will decide when and if a change will be made. Many students appreciate the opportunity to learn at their own pace without the pressures of competitive performance and team-grading. Schedules & Agendas Prior to football games and performances, students will be informed of the time they will be required to arrive ( Call Time ) and the time when they can expect to be picked up afterwards. These times will be announced and posted on the band room board. It is each band member s responsibility to inform his or her parents of these times. Specific itineraries are usually provided weekly during the competitive marching season. Also, check the band web site at or on Twitter for updates. Home Football games are over at approximately 9:45 p.m. (This time will vary depending on the game). Your child will be dismissed at the end of the game. Please be considerate and have transportation ready here at school. A staff member is required to stay with any student who has not been picked up. Contest trip itineraries and maps are usually available in the band room by Wednesday or Thursday during the week of a contest. These itineraries provide all of the information that parents and students will need to know for contest days. This includes the meeting times for the day, eating information, time we will arrive back home, etc... We try to copies of this itinerary out to parents and pass out a hard-copy to every student.

Contests & Festivals Contests and festivals are important events in the Siegel Band program. It is through these activities that we obtain valuable feedback about our progress as individuals and as a program. Our goal for every contest is to put on our best performance of the year. While we appreciate any extrinsic rewards, our ultimate goal is the satisfaction in putting on a great show for our audiences. Our public reputation is based upon each member s appearance and actions throughout the day. It is the responsibility of each Band Member to ensure that we present the best possible image at all times. The Siegel Concert Bands plan on attending the Concert Performance Assessment in the Spring Semester. This is a major performance opportunity for the concert bands, held during the school day and is a required event. We also plan on performing multiple concerts throughout the year. *Due to the performance-based nature of these events, students are expected to be present and prepared for all contests, festivals, and public performances. Classroom Procedures Each student is required to have a music stand, music, and all necessary materials (including a pencil). Students are expected to begin warming up as soon as possible before rehearsals begin. There should be silence in the room when anyone steps onto the podium. The full band warm-up is a very important part of each rehearsal. This is when we focus on the fundamentals of our playing so that we may improve both as a group and as individuals. Color Guard members are expected to dress-out for all classes and marching band practices. All guard members must be dressed-out, with all equipment and be in their designated class rehearsal area and ready to begin class by six (6) minutes after the class tardy bell. Inability to comply with this requirement will result in a grade deductions and/or removal from the color guard. Let s make our class time productive! Brass players should have all necessary mutes, mouthpieces, etc. Reed players should have at least 1 spare reed at their seat during rehearsal. Ideally, you should have four to five reeds that you rotate using from day to day. Vandoren V-12 or Legere reeds and Vandoren mouthpieces will be our preferred choices. A list of all recommended brands can be found on our website. Percussionists should have drumsticks and mallets during concert season. During marching season, make sure you have all of the required equipment needed to perform on your assigned instrument. Cases should be left in your cubby or around the walls in the rehearsal hall during rehearsal. At the end of rehearsal, make sure you put all of your equipment away. Instruments should be

put in your cubby after rehearsals. Anything left on the floor of the cubby room will be thrown away. Students are expected to take their instruments home to practice every day. 15 to 30 minutes each day is the minimum needed to retain and advance the skills learned in class. Remember: Good players practice until they get it right. Great players practice until they can t get it wrong. Percussion equipment is to be put away at the conclusion of each rehearsal. Timpani and keyboards for which there are covers, should be covered. Small equipment should be put in cases (if available) or returned to the appropriate storage area. Color guard equipment should be put away after each rehearsal in the designated guard storage area. No color guard equipment should be left lying around the band room or other areas. You are responsible for your flags and other equipment. Talking during rehearsals must be kept to a minimum. Talking should always be about music we are studying and should never be a distraction to the conductor or other students. Do not leave money, purses, wallets, or other valuables unsecured. The band room is not always locked for accessibility reasons. The band is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Lost and Found items will be donated to Goodwill periodically throughout the year if not claimed. All classes are expected to be full group rehearsals in which we make general comments or give individual suggestions to students. Class time is not meant to be private practice time. All students should come to class prepared to contribute out of respect to each other. Remember: You come to rehearsal to learn everyone else s part. Grading Procedures Band is a unique course at Siegel High School. It has curricular requirements, just as any other academic discipline, however it also has out-of-class requirements. The strength of our band program is the consolidation of these requirements into one performance-based, academic course of study. The level of commitment from each individual student is the driving force behind the organization and is reflected in the level of achievement reached by the individual and the program. Outstanding work-ethic and daily effort is rewarded and reflected in individual grades. All rehearsals are critical to student learning, and by their very nature cannot be made up or reproduced. Any rehearsal absence will negatively affect a student s performance. Although we frequently function as conductors, we are primarily teachers responsible for the musical education of each student in the band program. This is the reason we are insistent upon each student s daily participation. Rehearsals are not optional, and are reflected in the student s daily grade. Performances are viewed as major tests. A performance is a learning experience that cannot be duplicated. The level of concentration required in a public performance assists each student in developing an insight into his/her own level of performance. A performance is an important evaluative tool, allowing comparison of a student s performance in relation to classroom objectives and past performances. Absences from performances are only excused in the event of an extreme emergency: serious illness - doctor s note required or hospitalization of the student, death in the family, religious

holiday, or another reason deemed excusable by the directors. All absences from performances or rehearsals must be approved by the band directors, IN ADVANCE. Unexcused absences may result in the student being placed on an alternate status or dismissed. We strive to teach accountability and responsibility through these standards. Taking care of responsibilities is a part of the learning process and is reflected in the student s grade. These responsibilities include having all uniform parts ready for performances, in top shape, every time it is worn. Having all needed materials, instrument and accessories, in top working condition and ready for practices and performances is also part of the grading process. Student s grades will also reflect performance in turning in paperwork, assignments, etc. on time. In order for the band to operate effectively, every member must do his or her part in this area. Tolerance for student lack of responsibility will be very low. The band, as an organization, provides a medium through which students progress academically, musically, physically, and socially. Musicianship, attitude, attendance, punctuality, conduct, and a desire for excellence are consistently expected from each member of the Siegel Band. Therefore, individual practice and preparation are essential. Through the level of commitment required we hope to better prepare our students for the responsibilities encountered throughout their lives. Grades will also be determined by playing tests through SmartMusic throughout the year. This computer-based music evaluation is available both at home and at school. For more information about SmartMusic or to use the service, visit through the Google Chrome web browser. Bus Rules & Trip Procedures Safety is always most important when using school buses, school equipment, vans or trailers, etc... Ø All Rutherford County Bus rules and regulations apply while traveling with the Siegel Band. Ø You must follow all chaperone and bus driver instructions while on the bus. Ø You may not change buses. You must ride the bus to which you are assigned. Ø Do not play your instruments on the bus. Ø Answer roll call for yourself only. Keep the noise level down. Roll will be called by chaperones each time we load the bus. Ø Couples--Remember that this is a band function, not a date!! Adhere to school rules for couples. Ø Do not leave trash on the bus. Remember, you represent the Siegel Band. Ø At away games and contests, you must return with the Band, unless your PARENTS pick you up in person. Your parents must sign you out with one of the band directors or their designee at the bus loading area. You must then take the sign out sheet to the roll taker on your assigned bus.

Ø Home games are over at approximately 9:45 p.m. Parents are reminded that students are your responsibility at the conclusion of the game. Students will be dismissed from the stands. Ø Be courteous, do what the chaperones ask; thank the drivers and chaperones when we return. Ø Do not bring valuables unless you are sure you can secure them. Ø If you want to listen to music, you must use headphones. Ø YOU must put your instrument, equipment, and uniform back in the band room when we return home. If you ride home with your parents, make sure you have someone take care of your equipment. Ø When on any type of trip, students are reminded not to go anywhere by yourself. Always travel in pairs or larger groups. Individual Opportunities & Private Lessons In order for our band to reach the highest levels of achievement, every member must seek to improve individually. The band members at Siegel are very fortunate to be able to participate in a high quality private lesson program. All band students are Highly Encouraged to participate in this program. Details will be given to students after school starts. Honor Bands Students are Highly Encouraged to audition for the Mid-State Bands, Midstate Jazz Bands, All-State Bands, All- Rutherford County Bands, Solo and Ensemble Festivals, and other honor band activities that will be offered throughout the year. These events allow Siegel band students the opportunity to excel individually on their instruments and to receive recognition for their musical achievements. Information will be made available to all students as these various events occur. Please check the Siegel Band website for more information on these opportunities. Wind Ensemble members are expected to audition for MTSBOA Mid-State.

Uniform Information Band members are expected to have their uniform in pristine condition every time it is worn. This includes: clean pants, jacket, gloves, shoes, and shoe laces. We have uniform inspections prior to performances that are tied to every student s grade. Pants should have a neat, crisp crease and be the proper length. [Down to the top of the shoes with no break of the crease in front of the pants.] The hemline should skim the shoe in the front and extend to the top of the heel in the back. Do not cut the cuff or any part of the uniform. Winds & Percussion: students are required to wear long black socks with the uniform at all times. Long hair must be confined inside the hat. Members hair must be of a naturally occurring hair color. No earrings or other visible jewelry be worn at performances by any band member. No face makeup should be worn to ensure that the white fabric stays clean. Students should always wear their band shirts and shorts under their uniform. Do not attempt to wear jeans or bulky sweatpants under the uniform, only sweat-pants or long underwear are acceptable if it is cold. WHEN IN UNIFORM: do not unhook collars, unzip coats, take off hats, etc. unless the entire organization is instructed to do so by the band directors. Students are not permitted to wear unapproved baseball caps, hats, garments, jewelry or other unapproved items when in uniform. purchase band shoes approx. $38 (purchase as needed) and gloves $3/pair. Color guard shoes are estimated to be around $35. By signing the Band Member Agreement form, you understand that: the uniform pieces are the property of the Siegel High School Band. The laundry/dry-cleaning service is included as a part of the band camp fee. After wearing the uniform, students must hang it back up correctly on a heavy hanger and the garment bag zipped and stored properly. Gauntlets must be stored flat in the back pocket of the garment bag. Students are responsible for keeping up with all aspects of their uniforms during performances/trips. All pieces of the uniform must be turned in after every performance. If any part of the uniform is lost or damaged, you are required to notify Mrs. Bryson immediately by phone and pay the replacement costs. Missing or damaged uniform parts will be charged to the student s Charms account. All students are issued a band uniform during the week of band camp. Please be courteous and take care of your payment responsibilities. Taking proper care and safeguarding your uniform will help prevent the need to purchase replacement parts. Please do NOT wash or dry-clean your uniform without consulting the band directors or uniform arents first. Different washes to individual uniforms will result in them fading at varying rates.. *Hair color must be natural. No bright colors or hair dyes are permitted during the marching season while in uniform. Uniform Parent: Mrs. Kelly Bryson Contact Phone Number: Check your uniform for complete parts well enough in advance so that any deficiencies may be taken care of prior to performances. Prior to performance, any uniform deficiency is unacceptable and will be reflected in the student s grade. All students will be fitted for their band uniform during summer months of June and July. An annual uniform rental & cleaning fee is included in your band camp payment. Students will be required to

Additional Color Guard Information The Color Guard will be fitted for uniforms at a later specified date, following spring Color Guard Try-Out practices, so that uniforms can be ready in time for the marching season. Guard members will be required to turn in their Band Membership Agreement Form and Band Financial Agreement before they will be fitted for a uniform. Guard members will be issued a garment bag along with their uniform. Uniform bags should always be used to transport the uniform. Guard members are expected to purchase any required guard shoes, jackets or other necessary guard accessories. Color Guard members are required to attend selected fitness classes during June and July. A separate letter with additional information will be handed out at the end of the Color Guard Auditions. Physical fitness, teamwork, coordination and movement awareness are essential to the demands of this activity. If a member requires an alternative fitness program, one will be selected by the Guard Staff and approved by the Band Directors. Approximate cost for summer workouts is $55. SIEGEL SPRING-SEMESTER GUARD 2018 Color Guard is a full-year class and the guard will continue practicing in the Spring Semester Class. Siegel High School Band Boosters The Siegel High School Band Boosters is a non-profit organization to assist the band and the band directors in providing a high quality musical experience for all students enrolled in the band program at Siegel High School. The primary goal of the Boosters is to aid in providing needed funds to support the budget of the band program as set forth by the band directors. This is done by providing fund-raising events for both band parents and band students to participate in. Additionally, the Boosters provide needed funds for band equipment, instructional needs, and overall assistance as requested by the band directors for the operation of the Siegel Band. Membership is $5.00 per family. Only paid members with a child in the band are permitted to vote on club business. The club has a constitution and by-laws (available online) that is used to manage the operations of the club. We welcome all Siegel band families into our Siegel High Band Boosters. One of the major reasons that the Siegel Band has been successful in the past is due to the efforts and contributions of parent volunteers. If you have the desire to help the band in any way, we have a place for you! Please reach out to our Booster Officers or check the band website for updates on ways to help. Winter Guard is a separate activity and will require an additional fee to participate in the competitive group.

Band Booster Activities Parents are an important part of the Siegel High School Band, and have a vital role to play. There are many things parents can do: 1. Attend Band Booster Meetings. Times will be announced & posted via , and on the band web site at Siegelband.org. 2. Volunteer for parent teams. There are many different tasks with which we need your assistance, and you can find the niche that best suits you: chaperone, uniforms, concessions, pit/load/trailer crew & sewing are just a few options! 3. Be supportive of the Band Program and your child by: * Assisting your child to be prepared and punctual for every rehearsal and performance as well as meeting deadlines and responsibilities. * Help your child avoid lateness or absence from rehearsals and performance. Emphasize teamwork, responsibility, and accountability by helping them be prepared and present. * Encouraging your child to practice at home. Arrange for private lessons for your child. Encourage SmartMusic practice. * Showing your interest and support in your child s study by enthusiastically attending every performance possible. * Discussing with the directors anything that will help them understand and better serve your child. Membership Contributions & Forms There is a financial commitment of $900 that covers transportation to football games and contests, an overnight trip with hotel accommodations, the cost of show design and instruction, music, equipment, uniform maintenance costs, and many other things to get us through the school year. Fundraising opportunities are available to everyone to help off-set these costs. 1) The Siegel Band Camp Contribution is $500 (non-refundable) and is broken into two separate payments. Turn in all forms and payments to the Siegel HS Band office. A position in the show is dependent on the turning in of these forms and payment by the due date. The second half of the Band Camp fee ($250) is due at the Full Band Rehearsal/Parent Meeting on July 11, This payment covers instructor fees, show shirts, marching supplies, show music, and marching show drill. Due to associated planning costs, this fee is non-refundable. 2) The Fair Share Contribution is $250 (per family) due by September 1, This fair share payment contributes to the general operating expenses of the band program for the remainder of the year including transportation. 3) The remaining Fall Trip Contribution is $150 due by September 29, This fair share payment contributes to the travel and lodging expenses associated with the Fall Trip. *Please contact the band directors directly with any questions/concerns about the payment structure.
