1 THE ARROW Sarah Lance returns from Poland with team USA! October 2011 In this issue: The Presidents corner: Getting your hours in! 2 LB s Top Shots : 5 Want more? USA! USA! USA! That was all you could hear from the stands of the Youth World Championships held in Legnica, Poland. In our last issue, we mentioned that our own Sarah Lance was headed to this event with 23 other archers on Team USA and their coaching staff. She and her very supportive mom, Sherry left of August 19th and returned on August 28th with no medals, but not empty handed. Even though, Sarah won no medals, her mom got to see her compete to the best of her ability and support her team with everything she had. Continued page 4 Lincoln Bowmen s Top Shots! In this issue of the ARROW we are going to showcase some of Lincoln Bowmen s top archers. These are the people who are traveling around the state and country and some to other countries competing and spreading the Lincoln Bowmen spirit! I have listed them in the order I received the information. We should be proud of these fine Archers and their accomplishments. Kids Korner: Stranger awareness! A kids must read Just a thought Is Something new! ** No one here at the Arrow is an expert on anything; please consult with a trained professional i.e. your doctor before starting a workout regimen! Reading an article on STRANGER AWARNESS does not make your child TRAINED, just informed. For training please try PKSA Trenton ! ** I can honestly say that I have met and spoke to all of them over the last 2 years and they are awesome to know and watch! I also know that there are a few more people that should have been showcased but didn t respond to the call. Now that I have some data I can proceed to the next step. Watch Novembers the ARROW and the club for more! There s still time to submit your bio and accomplishments! 3 11

Pizzini Director: Larry Laboe (734) Directors direct Thank you to all the members who helped during the Saturday work detail and during 3D shoots! Kitchen help is always appreciated and welcomed. Smells are always free but you should have tried the chili! See you next time! The Presidents corner I get numerous calls from members asking about the required ten work hours. Some of you ask, what kind of work is needed at the club or what can I do? Others tell me that they cannot find the time to get the hours in. I for one have a hard time understanding that if a person can come to the club and shoot, that they cannot find time to get their hours in. If the year is broken down into 12 months, this equals 50 minutes per month and if it is taken down to 52 weeks, this equals 12 minutes per week! So back to, How do I get my hours in? Saturday work details are the number one way. Second is the special projects that are always on going and listed at the club and in the newsletter. 3-D, Met, NFAA, MAA, Beat down shoots and my favorite Breakfast with Santa all require help. The wild game dinner and all league banquets are also a good way and for those of you that still say, I just don't have the time! Well remember that 12 minutes per week that I stated earlier? Here are just a few things that can be done that only take 10 minutes or so. A person can do the following while taking a break from shooting. Emptying trashcans, sweeping or mopping the floor, wiping the tables down, cleaning the restrooms, bringing in firewood, replacing cardboard on the range and picking up trash inside and outside. I'm sure that if you look around we can all find small things to do that will help improve the club and also help you with those hours. I don't know of another place like Lincoln Bowmen that a person can go to and have as much enjoyment for as little as 12 minutes of they re time a week! The gate code will change as of October 1 st please contact a board member for the combination! Larry 2

3 Kids Korner! A place for kids, written by kids. Kids write an article about archery and send it to me, Holly at ArchersNews@Gmail.Com I ll make sure it gets into our newsletter! Stranger Awareness: Who s strange? With Halloween just around the corner, you have to be careful because that hunted house might just be spooky in a different way. A young man walks down the street and says, Hey kids! Free Haunted house tour and free candy! What do you do? DON T GO!!! It doesn t matter if your friends go with you, still don t go! If you can, try to convince them not to go, but if they don t listen to you don t go anyway! Remember to have fun at Halloween but be careful Vampires and Goblins just might be the bad guy. BOO! Len Roberts has passed away September 28, Len was a lifetime member at Lincoln Bowmen. He was also a long time member at Ford Archers and joined Lincoln Bowmen when the two clubs merged. Len love to shoot traditional archery and many a day he could be seen shooting with his brother in-law Rich Focht, also a passed Ford Archer and life time member of Lincoln Bowmen. Len will be missed by all of us that knew him. Our prayers and thoughts are with Len's family. Larry White Tail Warm up! Mens open Recurve Traditional John Klien 290 (W) Marv Schrum 236 (W) Anthony Pizzini 271 Joe Swetonic 236 Steve Pitts 268 Who s Winning? Editors Note If you haven t shot in one of our 3D shoots then your really missing out! Allow me to explain: First, all kids 12 and under along with beginners of any age and some traditional shooters shoot from the Orange pin which is the closest of 3. Mens free style Cubs Nick Adams 278 (W) Holly Pizzini 288 (W) Girls Bob VanDriessche 269 Ethan Clay 177(W) Boys Bill Howell 265 Brandon Genthanger 165 Longbow Womens Recurve Don Hancock 228 (W) Fran McCans 111(W) Rick Woodstock 177 Second, Adults and young adults shoot from the Green pin. This is farther away and more of a challenge. Third, the dreaded white pin. This, the last of 3 is the farthest and most difficult to hit. People shoot this pin with optics on their bows, target bows and some hunters or anyone who likes a challenge. When I first started shooting 2 years ago this is how it was explained to me. Sometimes the Director in charge of the shoot changes the rules and pin distance to keep things interesting. Our White tail warm up is mostly deer targets. See you on the course! Anthony 3

4 Sarah Lance continued. So, let me tell you how their trip went from beginning to end. On August 19th, the mom and daughter pair headed to the airport to meet up with four other people from Team USA, and catch a 2 o'clock flight to John F. Kennedy airport in New York. Unfortunately, this was the first event in a long list of problems for the group of six. Their flight was delayed due to their plane arriving late from it's former origin. Shortly after that, their flight going into JFK was cancelled due to bad weather. Thanks to Sherry and a teammate's mother, Diana Deaton, the whole group was able to get on another flight to JFK that left early enough to catch their connecting flight. But, they were met with more problems when they got to the gate. The flight that they were moved to had been over sold and they almost didn't get their seats. Luckily, they were able to leave and make it to JFK to meet up with the rest of their team. However, two girls on the team got stuck in Pennsylvania and couldn't get to JFK so, their team leader, Pro Archer, Diane Watson stayed behind to wait for them and would arrive the next day. The rest of the team was sent on to Prague, Chez Republic with assistant team leader, Robert Turner. Before the JFK-bound flight could take off they had to sit on the tarmac for 2 hours due to bad weather. After a hot meal, some sleep, and a light breakfast, 9 hours later the team made it to Prague safely. After going through customs, they went to baggage claim and every one had their luggage except the group from Detroit. So, Sarah and 3 teammates, and the two moms had no clothes and no equipment. Disappointed, the group filed a claim and got on the bus for a very exciting 5-hour bus ride to the hotel in Legnica, Poland. When they arrived at the hotel, the rooms had no air conditioning, and were very small, but the team survived. Sarah missed out on the unofficial practice day because she had no equipment and still no clothes. Thankfully, the bows of the three archers arrived that night with their team leader so, they could compete. They went to the mall to but some necessities, but still did not receive their suitcases for two more days. Sarah's practice day went off without a hitch, but she was still a little stiff because she had not practiced for days due to the loss of their luggage. The next day was the 23rd and it was time for the qualifying round. Sarah started off with a strong first 36 arrows, but she struggled in the last 36 leaving her to finish tenth. Her teammate Kendal finished second, and her other team mate Carli finished 6th. Their total score combined qualified them first for the team rounds later that day. Due to their placement, the girls had a bye for their only match of the day and would go to shoot the semi's later in the week. On the 24th, Sarah had a day off while the recurve shooters shot their qualifying rounds. The Mixed team rounds were later that day and the two compound teams representing Team USA both moved on to the gold medal matches. On the 25th, Team USA shot their elimination rounds. Sarah struggled in both her matches, but fought hard and was able to beat both her opponents in the last end, moving her into the quarter final rounds the next day. The 26th came and Sarah was up bright and early to get to the practice field and go over to the official field to shoot the quarter finals. However, in the quarter final match Sarah had to compete against her own teammate, Kendal and one of them would get knocked out. Sarah was focusing hard to win her match because all she had to do was win this match and she would move to either the gold or bronze medal match on the finals day. Her mom, Sherry was a bundle of nerves that morning as she watched her daughter. Sarah shot her personal best and tied the world record of a 145 out of a perfect 150, but lost to her team mate by one point leaving Kendal with the world record and the win to move her on the individual semi-finals. Even though Sarah lost, she still tied the world record and shot a personal best. Can't complain with that! Kendal went on to beat her next opponent with a 147 and break the world record again and gave her a spot in the gold medal match. Later that day, Sarah, Kendal, Carli and all the USA teams competed in the team rounds. Sadly, Sarah and her team lost their first match against Mexico and went on to the bronze match where they lost again to Italy. Sarah and Kendal having won team rounds last year were very disappointed. The boys junior team also lost their first match leaving them in the bronze as well; they won that match to be awarded the bronze medal. The day wasn't all bad though...the two cadet compound teams won their matches, moving them to the Gold medal match on the finals day. On the 27th, Team USA had all their cadets in the team finals. The cadet mixed team won the gold and the junior mixed team took the silver. The cadet girls team won the gold and so did the cadet boys team. On the 28th, two USA girls took the field for their gold medal matches. Emily Fischer, a cadet girl won her match, making her the first person to win all three medals at the event. She won individual, mixed team, and team rounds. Kendal Nicely, also won her match and broke the world record again, shooting a 148 which is only two points down from a perfect score. That night, the team celebrated at the banquet and left straight from there for Prague on another 5 hour bus ride. The whole team slept the whole ride, but they were there four hours early as planned because they had no idea if they could make it home due the hurricane reeking havoc in the states. All the kids slept on the floor at the airport and left the parents and team leaders to deal with the airlines. Thankfully, all the kids made it on a flight, but Sherry and Diana Deaton had to be left behind to catch a later flight. Sarah and the four other archers flew to Paris and then on to Detroit arriving at 7 p.m. but this time all their luggage was waiting on the carousel! Sherry made it home safely later that night arriving in Detroit at 10 p.m. Sarah didn't bring home any medals this time, but still had a great time with her Mom and got to support her team and be a family with her team mates. "Mom was great...she was my rock...i was glad to have her there because of all the trouble I had on this trip and we still had a great time." Sarah said of her trip when she got home. Sarah has come inside for indoor season now and her next trip is the first weekend in January and she will be headed off to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania for Indoor World Championship Trials. If she makes the team, she will travel to Las Vegas for the second time this upcoming year in February. Great shooting and Good Luck! We here at Lincoln Bowmen and the ARROW are proud of you! 4

11 Having problems receiving the ARROW? Here at the ARROW we strive to bring everyone the Lincoln Bowmen news. It is my opinion that everyone who is a paying member in good standing should receive a copy. Holly and I try to keep it as fresh as possible, visually appealing and easy to read. During the white tail warm up shoot it was brought to my attention that some members don t have computers and others are still on dial up and have not received their copy because I didn t mail it or the file was too large. This we apologize for! I can tell you this. I knew some people didn t get theirs because they changed there address and didn t inform the club and those got kicked back to me from the server. To correct this problem I requested an up dated list from Sherry Lance and still some problems exist. Wanting to do the right thing I printed 2 copies in color at home and hung 1 outside the clubhouse and 1 inside the clubhouse. I also left the previous months issue hanging for reference. Sherry and I are working on reducing the file size. I bought software that can reduce a picture from 5mb to 81kb but when I convert the file to a PDF format the file is huge! As for mailing, I do not have access to the clubs computer to print off copies and mail them out. One of the four people who use the clubs computer will need to do this. You re probably wondering why I m explaining this? The reason being is this. 2 long-term members approached me on this issue and I tried to explain it to them, as I later sat and thought about it I realized the explanation sounded like a load of crap and I was blowing them off! I assure you that I m telling you the truth and I m working with our board to make it better! Please give us a little more time to correct this. I appreciate you letting me know about the problem, now we can fix it! AP **For Sale** Just a thought! This Diamond youth bow is perfect for your little archer! Its adjustable draw length grows with them. It comes with factory pin sight, Camo whisker biscuit, Wrist strap and a Diamond detachable quiver (Quiver is a $50.00 value). Limbsaver limb savers are already attached. You can take this bow from 30-40lbs. all for $250.00! This is a must see, very clean and well kept! Call Anthony (734) Exercise? Lately at the firehouse the big push to reduce injury is Cross Fit training. One of the things I learned from my peer fitness trainer is to stretch after my workout not before! The idea is your muscles are warmed up before the stretch to reduce injury! All workouts start out light until the targeted muscle groups are warmed up! Remember; always consult your doctor before starting a workout program!
