1 DECEMBER 2016 EDITION UCA Neighborhood News President s Message by Dennis Seid Your board wants to wish you a HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON and a HAPPY NEW YEAR. This coming year, new CCR S will be presented for your approval, along with social events which will allow you to meet your neighbors. Don't forget to enter our 2nd ANNUAL HOLIDAY LIGHTING CONTEST. HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY SEASON! *************************************************************************************** Treasurer s Report by Michele Thomas As we enter the fourth month of our new fiscal year, I find that UCA remains financially stable with remotely no threat of an increase in assessments on the horizon. UCA enjoys an 83% funding in their reserves (the majority of associations in the U.S. are less than 70% funded), though there was a deficit in the previous fiscal year ending July 31,2016. The deficit was brought about by expenses relating to a mandated request for a special meeting by 5% of the community in response to the Board-approved Election and Director Policy. Though the petition to reverse the rules failed, the costs amounted to more than $10, for the mailing of a ballot for the special election along with attorney s fees in the approximate amount of $5, As our community ages, so does our magnificent urban forest grows. Costs to properly prune these trees by a certified arborist have also increased. During the last fiscal year, the cost to prune the trees was $96, (This was incurred for the Fall-Winter 2015/Spring-Summer 2016 schedule). All in all, UCA will be looking forward to a prosperous fiscal year! 3 P AGE 3 RESIDENTIAL PARKING AT UCA LETTER OF THE LAW VS SPIRIT OF THE LAW - Interpretations of the U.S. Constitution have historically divided on the "Letter versus Spirit" debate. If vehicles are illegally parked, enforcement of tickets can be issued. We all know parking is a very controversial issue at UCA and we encourage everyone to work together to help resolve this issue with your neighbors as much as possible. Everyone needs to understand where vehicles are allowed to park and work out whether vehicles are parking illegally. It is frequently reported that homeowners are parking in their driveways; however some vehicles are extending across the walkway. Please park as close to your garage doors as possible to avoid parking across the walkways as this can be very frustrating for your neighbors and the communi- Report a Coyote Sighting at coyotesighting@cityofirvine.org Coyote sightings are common in communities throughout Southern California. If you have questions, or want to report a coyote sighting or coyote activity, you can do so by calling Our homeowners have reported encounters with packs of coyotes. Most wild animals naturally fear humans and keep their distance. Problems arise when animals have access to food and garbage left out by homeowners. They develop an appetite for easy pickings and keep coming back for more. When that happens, they lose their natural fear of humans and become aggressive. Warnings. Avoid contact with wild animals, do not feed wild animals, use tamper-proof trash bins, keep your yards free from potential shelter such as thick brush, weeds, wood piles or excess debris, eliminate potential food etc.
