1 Show Information Updated 8 th March 2017 Hayley Byrne DATE OF SHOW: SUNDAY 26 MARCH VENUE: NORTHERN BALLET BUILDING The Stanley and Audrey Burton Theatre The clocks go forward on Sunday 26 March so please don t arrive at the wrong time! Please remember to change your clock on Saturday night!!! ARRIVAL & PICK UP TIMES ON THE DAY There is no rehearsal for our infants. Please could you arrive in the foyer for sign in. It would be most helpful if your child could arrive in their first costume with a dressing gown put over the top- this saves us getting them into their first outfit. They can then go home in their last outfit (if they have more than one dance) the less stuff on site- the less we are likely to lose property! If your child is in multi-dances it would be really helpful to have everything for 1 dance in one 1 labelled bag- this way if your child is involved in a quick change it s easier for us to get the bits together that we need. So if they were in 5 dances- then 5 labelled bags clearly stating name and dance on the front of it. Gift bags or paper bags are quite good for this- the sort you can write on and are plain. 11am Show 1pm Show 4pm and 6pm shows Arrive at please. Arrive at please. Arrive at 3.20 please. Please do not arrive before the stated time as I need my staff in place and they will be NOT be ready for sign in and to get the students backstage. It s great when people are keen and arrive early- but we need to be sorted out end for your arrival, so if you arrive you will just be hanging around waiting for us. When you arrive at the theatre- sign in is sorted by alphabetical surname.

2 As the school is massively split down for the above shows, students are in a studio together. We don t have a lot of people on site at all per show. Nothing like the Bradford shows! We access backstage via coded doors therefore they can t get out- the building is fully secure. Moreover, we have every child split down into small groups with teachers and licenced chaperones. Licenced chaperones and helpers are all DBS checked. The licenced chaperones have gone through a rigorous procedure to be a chaperone (my goodness it s harder than becoming a nursery nurse or teacher with interviews and references and such like they have to go through with Leeds City Council!) and we have the privilege of 2 doctor parents on site all day, as well as a bundle of first aiders including Hayley, Vikki, Laura, Sophie Here are some questions that I would have as a parent if my child was doing the show- I hope I answer your silent thoughts her - and if your child has any anxieties about the day- perhaps you can settle them by explaining what will be happening. What will happen when we arrive? Sign in, you should have arrived in your first outfit. They will be bundles of helpers waiting for you. We also have our lovely older girls in the form of pals and they will take their hand and will escort each child with their chaperones to their changing space, help with any bags and such like. At this point- it will be BYE MUM AND DAD you can then have a coffee in the coffee bar on site OR why not have a glass of wine in the Wardrobe across the road?! House doors open 20 mins before performance time for you to take your seats in the theatre. Whilst I am watching the show/when my child gets taken into a changing space? So, when your child gets backstage, we will lay out their costumes, make sure everyone/everything is organised to get started. We will split the children up into two halves of the room- the kids who are only in one dance will have more chance to play whereas the ones who are in numerous things- we have to be ready for you guys and make sure your things are in order so we can help to change them mid-show. When everyone is relaxed - we will be playing some games and have some fun competitions. No sooner it will be time for them to perform then they ll be back into the studio ready to be gathered up for collection.

3 Collection of children- how where what when? Once the show is over the children will be escorted and brought back down to the foyer in small groups to sign them out and hand them over. This will be done in a calm and efficient manner, and we would appreciate your help to get everyone out safely. We understand everyone wants to leave ASAP but safety is our number 1 priority. What happens if my child is upset backstage or becomes ill? In the unlikely event your child should become ill or inconsolably upset during the course of the show- we will not hesitate in putting out a tannoy announcement for you to meet us at reception. Remember- you re on site surely watching the show so it s not like you re leaving the building without them! Can I come backstage? No. We have quite literally a military operation going on and the more bodies that we have come back and forth- our tight procedure for safety is then put at risk. For this reasonno. We hope you understand and prefer us to be like this. My child is doing the 4pm and 6pm show.what happens inbetween these shows? For the safety and well-being of the kids it s easier for us to keep them backstage. Please could you possibly pack a packed tea. They can eat this inbetween the shows. I did contemplate letting you see/have them but for our risk assessments sake this means we have to sign back out, and no sooner have we done this it will be time to re-sign back in so completely and utterly pointless! Children like food(!!!)- and a packed tea will literally fill the time between the two showswe estimate- 4pm Show starts. Show finished. 5pm- Packed tea. 5.30pm- Prep ready for 6pm show. How long are the shows? The 11am show has a 38 min running time. The 1pm show has a 45 min running time. The 4pm and 6pm shows has a 53 min running time- slightly longer. TICKETS I believe all shows are nearly sold out- there are still tickets left though so don t panic! Therefore if you have any last minute purchases I would suggest to ring the box office today or buy online.

4 COSTUMES Costumes have started to be handed out in class, and final bits and pieces will be handed out next week. This is a mammoth task! NOTE- ON THE CHECKLIST- HIGHLIGHTED BITS ARE WHAT YOU HAVE GOT OR SHOULD BE RECEIVING FROM US AT THE ACADEMY. Other bits are what you need to provide yourself. Please take time to check the list (shoe colours, socks, tights, crop tops etc) so that we don t have any issues on the day. Checklist is at the end of this letter. Also- if you have a balance remaining please pay up! Thanks. HAIR Two french plaits with centre parting. Bobbles on the end and white bow ribbons. If you are unable to do this style then just pigtail plaits will be fine. We need the hairstyle flat for hats and such like which is hence why we steer away from the traditional bun!

5 MAKE-UP Girls Only- Red cheeks, blue eyeshadow, black side flicks, red lipstick. Make-up is a tricky subject- the strong stage lighting (and especially for the video recording) can blank out faces. It s showtime, and dancers wear make-up- we re not going shopping or to the playground! I know there are many opinions that s fine do whatever you want. I m not going to get into a debate with you about it or tell you what to do- it s your child. I am just letting you know why. This is a picture of extreme stage make-up I don t expect it so full on but just to give you an idea. Plus- what little girl doesn t love a bit of lipstick time?!! Mayeb not in some cases (again not crossing this bridge). There s also some lovely girls below from previous years where you can see it s not that heavily applied. PROGRAMME There is a programme on sale on the day in the foyers of the theatre priced at 1. A nice keepsake. DVD There is a DVD of the show which will have the 5.30pm Carriageworks show on it, and also the 11am, 1pm and 4pm shows of the Northern Ballet day. Videographers are VERY expensive and clearly we have 2 days work for him to do- as such are DVD s are priced at but will contain everything which is great news for siblings and multi-show-kids! DVD s can be pre purchased with Maureen at reception and also ordered on either show days. DVD s swiftly arrive a few weeks after for collection in class. Great memories to treasure. We have DVD as sadly due to venue laws with regards to child protection and theatre rules there is no personal photography and video recording allowed in their auditoriums. I am sure you are aware of this rule wherever you go theatre-wise!

6 BUS/CAR/TAXI/PARKING I would recommend the car park next to the building/wyp too! I believe Sunday parking is cheap. I suppose it s even cheaper to get a bus into town, or a UBER. but I know some will ask where I recommend to park?! CHECKLIST FOR SHOWDAY LABEL EVERYTHING including shoes I say this every year- and still we have loads of people who lose things unlabelled. Any items unlabelled will be thrown away. Any labelled items will be brought with us and returned to the rightful owner. NO NUTS. We have children with nut allergies. 1. Medication (inhalers) etc 2. Spare underwear (if young?) 3. Packed Tea if in the 4pm/6pm show and a spare carrier bag to pop your rubbish in. 4. Your show costumes if in multi! 5. Some water/juice. No fizzy pop please. 6. Light snacks for throughout if your child is a hungry beaver! ELASTICS, PROPS- AND OTHER COSTUME BITS AND PIECES. If you are in BUGSY MALONE BAD GUYS- you will need to bring along a newspaper with you on the day please. All general hats will need elastic attaching please- baseball caps should be fine without- this includes the following dancers- SYMPHONY OF THE SEA I THINK THE SAILOR HATS HERE ARE QUITE SMALL FITTING AND MEANT TO BE LIKE A CROWN FIT ON TOP OF THE HEAD AS OPPOSED TO A DOWN TO THE EAR HAT! ELASTIC PLEASE THE LAUGHING POLICEMAN- ELASTIC PLEASE. BAD GUYS- BUGSY MALONE HATS- ELASTIC PLEASE. COSTUME NOTES- Car Wash has been a flipping nightmare! The dungarees have been a disaster so we have used monies to purchase a yellow hooded top (these have the Elevations logo on so can double up to wear in class after the show- see always thinking ahead for further use- and a yellow and white baseball cap in kids size) please could you thus provide your own jeanslike a jean colour- like a blue denim- not the sort of black denim the blue type- these ones I ve copied are actually 4 from Asda! I m sure you all may have some jeans at home.

7 There have been a few other costume nightmares that we have sorted- like Ugly Duckling whreby the yellow tutus were out of stock so poor Maureen has been sewing away yellow feathers on white premium katz tutus!! Trouble on Thursday was a bit of a nightmare too as the criminal outfits that arrive were pure cheap tack and massive! Thus, we opted for something else. This does mean that the Thursday mini street class will need to provide own black tights instead of socks. Check the list.
