1 Cranbook Rotary Club of Cranbrook, PO Box 7, Cranbrook, BC V1C 4H6 Issue 3 October/November 2015 Message from our President On September 20, I attended the District Fall Assembly in Creston. As usual, it was very well-organized and informative. The district trainers provided some thought provoking sessions, and the guest speakers presented some inspiring projects. Here is recap of the highlights: - RESTOR. Rotoplast Canada has a new name. Same mission restoring lives. This is a Rotary International sanctioned organization. The mission has been expanded from cleft palate repair to burn contracture repair and other disfiguring and disabling conditions performed in developing countries. Rotarians can participate in missions. Ask me for more information or visit restorinternational.ca. - MEMBERSHIP & WAYS TO BUILD A VIBRANT CLUB. We brainstormed ideas to engage and attract new members looking at classification gaps; asking members to bring a potential member to lunch who is 10 years or more younger; inviting the media to more of our meetings; recognizing member contributions; utilizing Facebook, vimeo.com, and getting to know your fellow Rotarian in the media and our own newsletter; and developing a Friends of Rotary group. To build a vibrant club, it is important to tell others your Rotary story why you joined and why you stay; when you became a Rotarian, not just a Rotary member. Fellow Rotarians Max Dressler and Jim Chiu attended informative sessions on Grant Applications and Processes. Look for their update to the Club in future. World Polio Day is Saturday, October 24. At 4:30pm Friday, October 23, watch Rotary s World Polio Day Celebration and Update streamed live online from a Rotary-hosted event at Metropolitan Pavillion in New York City. Learn more by visiting PolioPlus: In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $9 billion to the effort. 3 Check our our web site or Our Clubrunner web site Message from our President... con't The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world. Rotary s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building. Less than 370 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2014, which is a reduction of more than 99 percent since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day. Every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million a year through Rotary Review Until next month, President Carla The PR committee met with some of the board of directors recently to discuss the Rotary Review and how to fill it with content for the 15/16 year. In alignment with Rotary International's " tell your Rotary story". We will be highlighting members this year and asking them to tell their Rotary story. So be prepared to be approached by the PR committee. Look for the first column highlighting President Carla soon. Rotary Villa The PR committee. Kurt Swanson has been responsible for the day to day supervision of our Fred Scott Rotary Villa for some years. As he is now away on an extended leave, we are looking for a temporary replacement. Any volunteers? For further information please contact Secretary Norm at nmmagee@telus.net or Page Three "Without goodwill no system can succeed; with it even an imperfect one can scarcely fail." 4 Check our our web site or Our Clubrunner web site Guess Who's Coming to Happy Hour? Our committee has decided to shake up the status quo and try something new! The idea is the same as GWCTD- except... guests only come for refreshments and appys! Not only that, they will be asked to bring an appy and refreshment with them. They will also be encouraged to bring a friend to introduce to club fellowship. Rotary member guests will still be charged $15.00 each as a donation to the Rotary Foundation. Upcoming events are planned for every month that has 5 Thursdays (except December) We hope this will take the pressure off hosting and will involve more of our members in this fun way to get to know each other. In the event you have too much fun, members can take a cab home and the club will pay for the trip. Just provide your receipt. Members can contact Mary Ann or John Zimmer if they have any questions or concerns. Club Assembly It is hoped that all members will attend this important meeting to discuss Club affairs & its future. Your input will be welcome.assembly is set for Tuesday evening 7:00 pm in the Heritage Inn. Annual General Meeting All members should attend the AGM which will include Reports from the directors & the Election of our Board for the year commencing 1st. July Hope to see you all at lunch Thursday 10th. December. Page Four "Friendship was the foundation rock on which Rotary was built and tolerance is the element which holds it together." 5 Page Five Go ICE Go Rotary Wheel DID YOU KNOW? A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization and Movement." Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the "Rotary International Association." A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a "keyway" in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.
