3 Volume 6, Issue 19 Page 3 In Spanish class, during the month of May, we celebrated Panama. The kids from 5th and 6th grade made art with paper to represent mola panels. What is a mola? you may ask. The mola is cloth that forms part of the traditional costume of a Kuna woman. In Dulegaya, the Kuna s native language, mola means shirt or clothing. Originally, the Kuna women painted their bodies with geometrical designs. Later, these designs were woven into cotton and later still, the mola was sewn using cloth bought from the European settlers of Panama. Molas are usually sold in pairs, consisting of the back and front panels of a blouse. Matched molas complement each other and should be displayed or used together for the greatest impact. These panels have many uses. They can be framed as art, made into pillows, place mats or even wall hangings. Some people even incorporate them into quilting projects such as bedspreads. The quality of a mola is determined by things such as the number of layers, fineness of stitching, evenness and width of cutouts, addition of details such as zigzag borders, lattice-work or embroidery, and general artistic merit of the design and color combination. Submitted by Señora Rago Location: Chuck E. Cheese s 20 Backus Avenue, Danbury Time: 3pm 9pm Date: June 3, 2013 Chuck E. Cheese s will donate 15% of the sales generated from this event to ILS. Friends and family members are encouraged to help support this event. Just notify the cashier that you re participating in our school fundraising night.

There will be no track practice next week but we will have an end-of-season ice cream party on Tuesday, June 4th at 3pm. Please RSVP to Amy Santoro via the invitation you received. As we prepare for our All Star track meet this Sunday, here are a few reminders: IT WILL BE HOT! So, please bring a lot of water. We will have our team canopy. If you want to bring a canopy for your family you can do so, you just need to set it up outside the fence. IT WILL BE SUNNY! Bring sunscreen, hats and sun glasses. If it thunderstorms on Sunday, please remember that we have a policy. We go to our cars and wait for 20 minutes and then the meet can resume once the thunder passes. We wait for the go-ahead from the central staff. We will run in the rain, as you know from the last meet. Note to program sales volunteers: You are off the hook for this role... as there are many schools at this meet, they were able to secure others to help. Please do report to our tent in case there is another role we need your help with.
5 Volume 6, Issue 19 Page 5 What s going on in First Grade?...I am so glad that you asked! Early in April we started an experiment to see if it was possible to re-grow celery yes, you read that correctly, we tried to re-grow celery using store bought stalks. First we cut them down to be about 2 inches left intact at the base of the stalks. Then we planted one chunk in dirt and the other in water. As some of you may remember from visiting our room during Ed Fair, our celeries were indeed re-growing!!! And they still are!! PTL CORNER Field Day is coming up on Friday, June 7th. The PTL has some fun surprises for everyone. A hot dog lunch will be served to everyone who attends. June 10th is the rain date. We are in need of volunteers to help out with a variety of things for this fun filled event. Please sign up on the PTL board or Erik Tonner at eriktonner@gmail.com. Upcoming Events June 3 3pm-9pm ILS Chuck E. Cheese Night June 5 7:45am Honor Roll Breakfast June 7 11am Field Day At Ed Fair time, they were only a few centimeters taller than the original stalks. As of yesterday, our water celery [A], was 17.5 centimeters tall and still in water. Our dirt celery [B], has grown to be 19.2 centimeters tall. It is also interesting to the Friends that [A] barely has a root system while [B], on the other hand, has roots that are almost as long as it is tall! All in all, this was a fascinating experiment for the Friends (and their teacher). I have learned that some people were so interested in our celeries that they have started to re-grow their own celery at home. I wonder what else we could re-grow? Submitted by Ms. Murphy
