G. Fassett and John Rule to dscuss the ssue. The meetng was taken up wth a queston-and-answer perod between DormCom and the Deans, n an attempt to clarfy the postons of both sdes. Bob Hecht, Presdent of DormCom, sad that no specfc agenda had been set for the meetng. Dean Fassett agreed that the meetng was devoted to prelmnary explanatons and dscussons, wth no offcal plans beng offered. He sad that DormComn had requested ths meetng, largely to clarfy ther understandng of the: Admnstraton's poston. At the present tme, DormCom s the sole agency of the Student government dealng wth the problem. Hecht sad that hs group, as well as the Admnstraton, had no plan to offer. (Contnued on page 8) The 37th Annual Conventon of P Tau Sgma, natonal honorary mechancal engneerng socety, wll be clmaxed tonght wth a banquet to be held n the Crystal Room of the Hotel Renmore at 7 o'clock. The conventon, largely a seres of busness sessons for the 100 delegates of the 63 chapters represented, has been n process here at MT snce Sunday nght, when the delegates arrved. Soderberg, Stratton Address M..'s Monday's program ncluded two busness meetngs for the group at the Lttle Theatre n Kresge, after a speech of welcome by Professor Carl Soderberg. Arnold declned to make any further comment beyond the orgnal statement made by the corporaton commttee earler ths fall. Ths statement smply ndcated the commttee's dspleasure wth the present paretal rules stuaton wthout gvng reasons for ths dspleasure. t was later ndcated that specfc reasons for the dspleasure would not be forthcomng untl student government had made ts reevaluaton and reached ts concluson. Howard P. Zeger, House Charman of Baker House, commented further on the Open House ssue. He feels that, should a serous nfrng2- ment of hours take place, a dormtory exodus would grow to a much greater level than at present. He feels that the Admnstraton would have two possble ways of counterng ths. "Frst," he sad, "and most pessmstcally, they could put a greater pressure on students by requrng students beyond the Freshman class to lve on campus, or by exertng fnancal or other nfluences on students chosng to move out. The more hopeful possblty s that the nsttute mght see ft to soften ts poston and come to a more realstc atttude. t could seek to.make dormtory lvng more attractve to the students by provdng better facltes, more lberal atmosphere, and restorng present cuts n servces." The rather weak plot tells of Harold Dtmar (James MacArthur), a hghschool boy and son of a wealthy Hollywood move producer (James Daly), who gets nto trouble by annoyng a patron of a move theatre, gettng bodly thrown out, and fnally boppng the manager on the nose. Poppa Dtmar pulls some strngs to get Hal out of a charge of assault but makes lfe at home rather dffcult for hm. The trouble s that Poppa doesn't beleve Hal's story about httng the manager n self-defense. Hal s very upset by ths and so goes to ask the manager to tell hs father the truth. However, the manager tres to remove Hal from hs offce and so-hal bops hm agan. Fnally the truth comes out and everyone s made happy (except the manager who has a pretty sore nose). The conflct actually centers around the father who has faled to gve hs son the love he needs. There s only a superfcal relatonshp between father and son because producer Dtmar devotes so much of hs tme to makng moves. There seems to be a barrer between them whch s expressed by the father when he says--" don't know hm. How do you speak to hm?" Smlarly, there s the same sort of barrer between Hal's mother and hs father. The presentaton of these conflcts s qute artstc and t s only n the attempted resoluton of them that the move fals. The fact that Hal s up aganst a barrer, not only wth hs father but n everythng he does, s shown by many pctures of fences such as the one around the house of a frend who sn't allowed to assocate wth Hal because he s a "bad nfluence." We even see one barrer whch Hal must face every day-the stcky door of hs car. The superfcalty of Hal's relatonshp wth hs father s developed by many references to clothng and appearances n general whch tend to emphasze the fact that the relatonshp lacks substance but has only appearance or "outsde." Ths s obvous n a scene where Hal's father pulls out a long rack of jackets (the rack comng between the two--another barrer) and makes Hal put one on. Hal at school wants a car so as to make a good appearance. Also Hal's father s n the move busness and much of the acton -takes place n a move theatre-moves also emphaszng appearance or what one sees. The barrer between Hal's father and mother s ncely presented n the dnner table scenes where the couple st at opposte ends of a ong dnner table. The move's man falure s at the end when all of a sudden thngs seem fne and dandy agan. t s hard to beleve that all the ntrcate problems whch were presented would vansh when Mr. Dtmar learns the truth, but ths s exactly what seems to happen as the move ends on the smlng faces of Hal and hs Dad. Near the streetlght, brown and yellow and red dropped from trees, slow, untouched by the stllness. And the trees and the lght-were maged n the glazed mrror: street. A shadow, breathng frosty cfouds, crept out of the darkness and paused, at the edge of tme. The frst shot cut through the scene and twanged off the edge of the buldng. Nothng moved, and then the fgure darted back nto nght, followed by the btter crackle of gunfre. Dat-dat-dat-dat. Then three men pursued the shadow to the buldng. "There!" one of them cred, and they dashed off after ther man. For a whle afterwards, frustrated shootng nterrupted the slence, then faded. very wndow was blanketed, and a haze of cgarette smoke flled the lecture hall. ntermttent murmurs broke the hush as a tall polceman stood up to speak. A maroon and grey scarf hung lazly off hs shoulder. "You sophomores must rse to the cause!" he screamed. "Now! Only an hour ago our men near Runkle cornered specal agent Meadowbrook of the freshmen. He escaped, but we know he's got t under hs coat. Men, we've forty-fve mnutes to get hm; and f mdnght fnds us wthout the Shaft, t's runaton for you and the force! All rght, cat 'emr up!" A hgh-ptched roar perced the haze, and the sophomores charged out for the kll. Across the rver, a. bell tolled eleven-thrty. The streelght was shattered now, but the long beams of many searchlghts glared at the lower level of Walker. Broken glass covered the ground, and persstent sophomores flled the wndows wth bullets. Occasonally, students wth pstols or hand grenades attacked the lone fghter trapped n The Tech offces. But, a sure shot, he had sent all back to the protectve darkness. Suddenly a loudspeaker blared forth: "Meadowbrook, we know you've got the Purple Shaft wth you. Come and hand t over, and you won't get hurt." The searchlghts converged upon one wndow. A small whte cloth appeared, and after t the tall form of agent Meadowbrook. Collar turned up, hs coat hd a long, thn object. Breathlessly, the enemy wated as the freedom fghter hunched hs shoulders and glanced at hs watch: 11:58, then walked toward the loudspeaker. A machne gun shocked the nght n nervous beats. The man stood nstantly erect, then crumpled heavly onto the street. People rushed to hm, anxous for vctory. The polceman brushed away a tear of exhauston wth hs scarf and knelt, supportng Meadowbrook. "You hadn't a prayer, varlet." He pulled open the coat, and there, damp wth freshman blood, was Meadowbrook's t-square. The stunned crowd lapsed nto slence as Meadowbrook smled weakly and sad, "Sucker, what you're lookng for s safe n Baker now. t's mdnght, and we have won! Week-end dates wll get a chance to see all the top fall sports n acton. The undefeat- ; Soccer team wll nleet underdog coast Guard Academy; the ntramural All Star Football team wll play 1,st year's champons, SA; the fast r-provng Rugby team plays Dart- ;outh n a return battle that should ;e a thrller; our famous salng c:ewvs wll try :for another wn n the Schell Regatta on the Charles;.nd the track men wll partcpate,. nter-squad meets. To Fll Feld Day Vod All of these events team up to gve FLT an unprecedented day of ath- letcs. t was ntated by the Athletc Assocaton for several reasons. Wth the elmnaton of Feld Day, a vod was left n the fall progralm. Tech can have no "homecomnr celebraton", but the AA felt that t could have somethng comparable n a day such as t has plannedl, a (ay n-whch a spectator could have a concentrated chance to see the full array of MT athletcs. "Ths," sadl AA Presdent Dan Holland '538, "coupled wth the JP affars wll gve the MT student one of the best weekends possble." Jazz At Luncheon n the sprt of the day, the AA has planned a luncheon n the cage -whch may well be the largest conglregaton of MT students for ths year. The score was Coast Guard 35, MT :36, Northeastern 52. For the thrd consecutve meet, the Cardnal and G ray were paced by D)uncan wng, '58 and llod Swft '58, who fnshed thrd and fourth, respectvely. Swmmng: lmnated snce the freshmen were clutterng up the pool and gettng n the way of Varsty practce, thus hurtng ntercollegate results. 3. Football: The grd game was (lroppe(l because of the cost nvolved and because some thought t poor for MT to lose to prep schools. 4. Track: The long tradtonal relay race was dropped s;mply because everythng else was gong and ths mght as well too. How have these reasons stood up w th tme? Crew-The freshman crew whch could not possbly be ready for a race by Feld Day, wll nonetheless race Dartmouth ths Saturday, the tradtonal date of Feld Day. Though they wll race under restraned condtons, there s no reason whatsoever that these same restrctons could not have been put on a soph-frosh race. Swmmng-MT was certanly lucky not to have the pool cluttered up!hs year as the Varsty began practce just ths past week. Obvously the 5-50 freshmen and sophomores who would have partcpated n Feld Day would have been an nconvenence to the varsty vwho wasn't even there untl the last week. Festball-Here wvas the br economy measure-save money by elmnatng football. What has the AA done wth a large porton of the money t has saved?-voted to gve letter sweaters to varsty lettermnen. Wthout argung the merts of such an award t remans that our econony-mnded AA can stll fnd money to try and promote sprt n ths manner; why not then n a tme tested actvty. Track-Snce there wll be a relay race as a part of All Sports Day ths event has been cut n stature only. These obvous dscrepances are not the vtal thngs to consder, however. Frst n our mnds must be the ultmate goal of the MT athletc systemrn. Certanly n the past, and as certanly today' (wth the excepton of the AA), the keyword of our athletc system has been partcpaton. Sure, nobody lkes to lose, but at a school lke MT we want an athletc system that exsts frst for the beneft and enjoyment of all students, and second to produce vctorous teams. Under ths type of system, f a Feld Day swmmng race s allowng 40 to 50 guys to partcpate and the only cost s that the swmmng team must start practce at the same tme as all other wnter teams, then the sprted, f not talented, un(lerclassmen get ther chance frst. Turnng agan to partcpaton, nothng n recent years has hurt partcpaton more than the elmnaton of Feld Day. Ffty less frosh are out for crew, at least 10 to 15 less for track, the 30 swmmers and 25 to 30 football men are totally mssng. Surely among these men are a few who would have become "frst team" and now wll never partcpate at all. There s no argument but that AT offers one of the fnest athletc systems n the country; the queston s the orentaton of ths program.
