2 Falcon Monthly Visit to the Pumpkin Patch Florence and Henry Receive Spanish Grant By: Emma Tardy Due to a grant, Henry and Florence are sharing a Spanish teacher this year. Miss Bach, a graduate of Florence, is beginning her teaching career as part of this grant.but Henry and Florence aren t the only schools benefitting from this funding. Three other districts have benefitted as well: Baltic/Garretson, Bridgewater-Emery-Hanson, Bell-Fourche, and Spearfish. This grant also helps the teacher shortage in South Dakota. Over the 3 years the districts will receive a total of $376,000. Secretary of Education Dr. Melody Schopp said, The Blue Ribbon Task Force discussions about teacher recruitment and retention included a focus on providing students with access to high quality learning opportunities, no matter where they are located in the state. The purpose of SB 133 is to provide incentives for districts to be able to work together to find ways to increase the learning opportunities. For the first year of her teaching, the state of South Dakota will pay 100%. The second year they ll pay 50% and the third year South Dakota will pay 25%. Miss. Bach studied at Black Hills State for 4 years. I like it here and I like the opportunities that are offered here Page 2

Senior Cassie Ford Senior Brandon Fisher The 2016 cross country team. Senior Spotlight - Brandon Fisher By Laney Ulschmid Future Plans- He plans on attending USD for Medical School or SDSU for Pre Med Active in- Track, Cross Country, Band, Choir, Oral Interp, and Play What he liked about Henry- It s easier to help everybody due to small class size in all grades Cross Country Goes to State By Alicia Burbach Florence-Henry has had another excellent year for cross country. The results in cross country is that the boys have won 2 meets- they were in Milbank and Desmet. They also got 2 nd at Sioux Valley and ECC. Grant Dewitt, Bryan Reiter, and Jeff Wanner all placed individually consistently. All the runner s times improved over the season. They will miss the seniors, but looking forward to a good young group of kids. The coaches exceeded their expectations, but they would ve liked more state qualifiers. For the most part, cross country is a very mentally and physically challenging sport. It is not just leisurely running. They are very proud if the efforts. When they run state on October 22 in Huron, Grant Dewitt and Bryan Reiter will be running. The coaches with be excited as possible of the placing. Page 3

4 Have you written something that you would like in the paper? Contact Mr. Muller at: October Football Results By Rebecca Waldner The Florence-Henry Falcons have gone 2-2 since the last paper. We won against Dakota hill on September 23 rd with a score of We had a disappointing loss for our homecoming game on September 30 th. We lost the game Although we lost, we did better than last year as we actually scored this year. Last year the game was over by halftime. We won against Tri-State on October 7 th in Fairmont North Dakota with a score of Our junior high football team is undefeated this year. "We've been giving a lot of effort. He has a lot of leadership in our 8th grade, both on the football team, the weight room, and the classroom," says Mr. Ernst. This year team has played extremely hard and aggressive, improving as the season progressed. Our record certainly reflects the work ethic that is displayed in each practice, and it is a joy to work with these young men, day in and day out. We have accomplished goals that we set forth at the beginning of the season, and I can honestly say that they make coaching in the Florence/Henry co-op extremely worthwhile, says Mr. Thue. The next football game is October 20 th at 7:00 p.m. in Florence against Clark/Willow Lake. It is our last regular season game. Page 4

5 October Volleyball By Sarina West Our month of October for volleyball started on the 4 th playing a home game against Castlewood leaving us a score of 2-5. It was a fairly close game and overall we did wonderful. Moving into the second home game of October 6 th the girls played against Waverly-South Shore taking home the win at 3-5. Bringing us to our out of home games, we started the 11 th of October in Estelline going 3 to 3 against our opponent. Then we have another astounding win from the Henry Falcons on the 13 th winning all three rounds, once again. That brings us to the game that took place in Groton giving us a loss for all three of the rounds. Mr. Grassel had a few words to say about our games so far this month stating, We did very well, we have shown a lot of character when dealt a bad hand during the games. During our long stretch of three games a week we showed a lot of camaraderie during the losses. Ending his comment with, We are always striving to get better each day. Page 5

Four people will be going from Henry, they are Briana Hotzler, Chasity Foster, Jeff Wanner, and Carter Hoffer. Briana Hotzler this will be her third year going. Briana is an alto. The lower elementary grades will be singing songs of fall and Thanksgiving including Crunchy Leaves and I Like Thanksgiving as well as some other selections. Having our concerts in the fall will give us the opportunity to perform music that we might otherwise not be able to. It also allows us to explore different ideas for the spring concert, it should be a fun event filled with a variety of music. Preschool- 12 grade will be presenting a program on November 10 th to honor our veterans. Veterans day is actually on November 11 th, which is on a Friday so we are having our program on Thursday instead. We are honored to perform this program and want to thank all those who have served our country. The program will start at 2:00 p.m. We invite everyone to come to all three events. Mrs.Martens is very proud of the work being done by all of the students involved in these concerts and is excited for the opportunity for them to perform and show off their talents. Page 7
